Gouache Studies
I've been wanting to put some more time into painting with gouache lately so I'm starting a study thread, feel free to join in! Here are two pieces from this weekend's attempts. The first is a Dean Cornwell study done along with a livestream from Jeff Watts. Clear reference was tough to find, so I just went along with the process I saw Jeff work though in the video. I spent about 3 hours on the Cornwell study and then applied the same process to an original sketch I did of Norman Rockwell from a black and white photo, which also took about 3 hours. Still getting the hang of organizing values on the palette, I feel like my palette gets crazy and disorganized quickly, so by the end of the Rockwell piece I was hunting and mixing a lot more to get back to the appropriate values. I'd love any feedback, suggestions, notes or revelations you've had during your own gouache adventures! Self Portraits through the years
Hey all! I'm so glad Proko 2.0 is finally a reality, and I'm hyped about what this community will become! As my first post here, I'd like to share a few self portraits that I've made over the years. I like seeing them and think about the things that have change in my skills, my techniques and in me personally. I think everyone should paint a self portrait once in a while. It's a very special experience. Paintings dates: May 2014, May 2019, February 2020, May 2020, February 2021

My weird gouache paintings
So I have been doing MapCrunch street view paintings for some time as a practice for drawing scenes, I started doing that at the mid of 2019, I call this practice "Cloud Travel", which happened to make a lot of sense in the covid situation XD. Recently I started to give those Cloud Travel images some twists on top of the original street views, so here it goes! Hope you guys dig it. I post my stuff on Artstation and also my personal blog gallery: https://www.artstation.com/nicksbest http://www.wellobserve.com/index_gallery.html

I’m so sick of this poor rooster, but I’m sure he’s even more sick of me 😂 I have painted the same rooster (reference attached) three times now in three different styles. I’d love to hear any critiques, and which rooster (if any) is your favourite?

Quick digital paint sketches
I like to do quick digital painting 'sketches' to practice being loose during painting. I get asked a lot about my minimal brushstroke type of style, and this is one of my secrets to getting better at that style. I pick a theme, and then I do quick paint sketches to try to just capture likeness and emotion without using too many brush strokes. I don't try to get a lot of detail, actually I focus on the opposite. Here are a few of my examples. Comments welcome!

Proko Portrait! - Let me know what you think!
Hey guys! SLEW here, This is a 14x18 inch portrait in oil I did of Mr. Proko! It was a challenging project for me for a few reasons! First, the reference photo I grabbed from google was pretty small and low res... which made it hard to really see some of the nuances of the details. Although challenging in that regard, the lack of detail actually helped me focus on big shapes and perhaps ignore detail in the beginning stages. (I tend to try and fish out detail too quickly within the painting process. Another reason It was challenging is that I do not usually do portraits this big. I usually like to work with smaller faces! 14x18 is actually the largest portrait I've painted to date. More paint and more surface area.. challenging but really fun. I spent a few days attacking this bad boy and probably put around 10 hours into the painting. I think overall I went a little too white with the lights.. another issue of mine is I start with too high of a value in the lights and then I don't have a lot of room to push it even lighter with highlights... it becomes a little chalky with too much white paint. But I wanted to make a very illuminated portrait as well as bring a lot of chroma and variation in color. The teeth also killed me, I think I could have represented them simpler and not try to have them look super realistic. All and all I am happy with this painting and glad I gave it a shot! I've attached a few process pictures including a 90 min pencil sketch to warm up. Next week I will be releasing a full video on my YouTube channel going through every step of this project! Please feel free to give me a critique! I am hungry for other people's opinions! SLEW

Finally painted something in oil that I don't completely hate:D
So I have been getting into oils for about a month now. Got some good pointers here before. Better brushes do help a lot!:D I feel like I'm finally starting to understand what I'm doing to the point where I can sit down and try to paint something instead of worrying too much bout mediums, solvents, brushes and all that. I suppose just a matter of experimenting with tools and practicing now. I'd be very happy to get any critique or tips, especially those relating to the oil paints medium:) I was also thinking of buying Stephen Bauman's course on Classical Portraiture, here on Proko. Is it a good choice for me as a beginner in the medium or should I try some more basic courses? If so do you know of any good ones? Edit: Forgot one thing!:D I have to keep my painting in direct sunlight when photographing it since my cheap phone camera needs a lot of light to take reasonable quality photos. I know I will probably have to invest in some better camera sometime but for now I will have to stuck to the phone camera. How much of a problem are the highlights on the paint? It's have to avoid them with direct sunlight and glossy paint. Any tips relating to that?

I did this self-portrait in oil - Do you have any tips?
If I could express my joy over this painting in backflips, then I would be doing a quadruple! I'm really proud of it :) I've been oil painting since June and with this piece being my best yet, I'd like to submit for critique and tips. This sketch took me roughly 5 hours. I can tell many of it's flaws, like proportion and that parts are unfinished (I ran out of time). I'm less concerned about the "drawing" part and more about the painting part; about values, edges, color, the painting process, obvious painting mistakes, brushmanship etc. I studied Alla Prima II intently this spring and have been practicing my oil painting through small sketches this summer, but never had anyone look at my work. I've previously attempted self-portraits, but with this one I got a break through. 2 hours in I felt like I was starting to destroy it (I was very happy with the start). This is a point I've hit before. This time, instead of continuing I took a short brake and thought about it, and I noticed that I wasn't really copying the shapes; I had done so for the major shapes, but not the smaller, because analzying them requires a great deal of effort. But now I pushed through, trying to disciplin myself to analyze more carefully. And suddenly I saw more then I have ever seen before, and I grasped better then ever how to brake the face down into brush strokes! I attached some other sketches aswell, though I don't expect you to critique them all, just as a help in finding out my bad habits and weaknesses. And for fun :) Thanks in advance!

Oil paint 101
Thanks to loads of help on these forums, I managed to work out what I needed to get going with my first attempts at oil painting - some really fun retail therapy later - some cool "Jacksons" supplies (London based art shop which I really recommend) I have managed my first painting... Whether its any good or not, it was certainly much more fun than the frustrating world of watercolour painting. The first lesson that you learn straight away is what they mean when they talk about the "push and pull" of Oil painting - which strikes me as very similar to trying to blend edges of shadow and half tone with graphite pencils. @Liandro - hope you like it...

The Three Amigos (Photo Study)
I did another photo study using watercolour and gouache. This time I painted in A3 so it allows me to include more small details, so the scale of everything can look nicer, but it's kinda boring to do all the details with different colour because I'll have to re-mix that tiny portion, unlike doing black and white. Please give some thoughts on this! :D My large scanner doesn't really have a good colour reproduction, I adjusted in GIMP to try to make it look as close as what I see on paper.... Learning To Paint In Gouache
I've been playing around with gouache a bit lately. To study, I've been watching Jeff Watts videos and practicing small heads to get a feel for the paint and trying to get control of my values. I've got a long way to go, but I can tell gouache is the medium for me. I like that it can be used in an opaque manner, and that I can set it aside and work on it whenever I have time. Even the drying time just seems to suit my temperament. I'm sure I'll do larger studies, color studies, etc. For the short term, I just want to create a painting habit in my life to build up brush mileage as Jeff Watts says. I'll post to this thread as I go to track progress.

make a living as an artist
I am not sure if this is the right forum for this question. My apologies if it is not. Hello, I am a 46 years old computer engineer. When I was a child I drew a little but nothing serious. 3 and a half years ago I am painting in photoshop as a hobby in my free time more regularly. Here I add some of my pieces. The question I ask: Could I make a living as an artist? ...Yes, I know that "it's never too late" but 46 years old and zero experience is too much, isn't it? Thanks in advance.

Hello there everyone, I was working on this painting and I got some really helpful feedback on my work. I am almost done with the painting and I am really happy with the final result. Portrait sketch from life
This is oil on gessobord, 8 x 10 inches. I wanted to document my fiance's pandemic ponytail. I've already decided that I want to keep it sketchy and not develop it further, but since I'm thinking of giving it to his mother as a gift, I'd appreciate it if someone could take a look and let me know if there's anything off. If the ear is too low or the neck is too long, I don't want my mistakes haunting me from a frame on her wall over Thanksgiving dinner.

digital figure painting
So, I decided to get serious about my digital painting. I have been doing studies and experiments to get more familiar with the medium. Having learned a process that I like and that works for me, I did a full digital figure painting today. My process is as follows: 1) I sketch out my image using straight lines on a new layer. I work out the silhouette and the line that separates the light from the shadow. 2) On a new layer, I clean up my sketch, rounding off the lines and refining the shadows. 3) I create a new layer under the line art, and fill it in with about 50% gray 4) I then fill in my shadows with about 75% gray 5) I turn off the line art layer 6) I then create a new layer above the line art, and paint the image. I have found that I am in need of some new brushes, this painting needs some texture. So I am looking at some youtube videos on how to create brushes to get what I need. I hope this is helpful to any of you who are trying out digital. This is not the only way to do it, just the way that I have found that works for me :)

Hi everyone! I have recently picked up oil painting and would really appreciate some direction and critique. All three are plein-air paintings, the vertical ones are 8 x 10 inches and were finished outside in one session. The horizontal one is slightly bigger and was finished up in the "studio". I'm trying to think in three values and thumbnailing the composition beforehand but finding myself struggling with the color, value, and just feeling that it's lacking overall. Anyways, would love to hear any advice and critique so I can maybe start improving :)

2D Color Space Analysis
In these images we have two portraits, the first by Sargent and the second by Solomon. Both contain pretty simple analogous color schemes but, as the shape of the color map shows, with diferent levels of saturation mostly within the yellow-orange spectrum. So, along with the master study course I am preparing for I am looking at different ways to assess and analyze the color in a portrait. The difficulty translating oil paint into digital color expressions is that most color in an oil painting is a result of the mixing of literal physical pigments rather that selecting a pixel of color (as it is done digitally). So I developed this color wheel to simulate the neutralization of a hue by mixing with it's complement (red mixed with green for instance). What I can't figure out how to do is how to show the values as well without making the model 3D... Still working on that. Eventually I want to perfect the analysis model so that I can compare the color expressions of artists throughout their career and also to compare between artists. It could also be use to compare color expressions between eras- What color world was available to Velasquez via the pigments availabel at that time vs. as artist with all of the modern synthetic pigments we have today...

Airplane Rides $5 (Photo study)
Finally took some tome to finish this photo study I left half done from last week when I was browsing for interesting photos. This is done in watercolour & gouache on my drawing book (just 120gsm laser print paper), with some margins slightly smaller than A4. I don't have dedicated gouache for colour, only black and white, so I used some watercolour to do the colouring. 3 colours: Cobalt Blue & Cadium Red/Yellow. It's really hard to mix teal and some more vibrant purple or "colder red" using them. I should have some lighter pigments so I can pull the saturation a bit more. Otherwise I'm mostly happy with the result, it's just took too long for me to mix. Maybe because I have a rather small palette area. Oh I added a fake film border for some aesthetic LOL Any thoughts on this one? :D I found the reference photo on flickr here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/mihoff55/43120962345/in/faves-193183905@N06/

'After the storm' digital painting - looking for critiques
Hello, recently I've finished this piece and would love to see some opinions about it. The biggest issues for me here were general composition of the piece and getting good feeling with these clouds. Let me know about anything you think I can improve.

Digital portrait, trying to have a traditional feel
Hey everyone! I love traditional charcoal/graphite based portraits, I'm trying to recreate it on digital in some way. What do you think? Is it close somehow? Also, if you have any suggestions for the portrait/painting, please let me know! Thanks

Recent weird paintings
Hey guys!! It's been a while since I logged on Proko XD. Had a bit time today and I think I could share some of my latest digital paintings with you guys. I've been learning from the works of my "art parents" a lot, which helped me figuring out some techniques and I also get to explore more on my world building stuff :D

Latests watercolor sketches
Hello everyone ! I thought I would post my latest art as my firt topic. I have been practicing watercolor for a year and some months now and I’m having a blast. As soon as you get over the “backwards” way of working, it’s such a great medium. Especially to convey an idea quickly when doing plein air paintings. These 2 are based on photos and like the title says, they are my latest 2.

I’m finally getting around to painting this after wanting to for so long. Here’s the underpainting done in transparent red oxide. I did a general color study as well as one of her face to further work out the flesh colors and temperature relationships more.

Oil Painting while Pregnant
A Question for Oil Painters - I recently found out I'm pregnant (exciting!) and have started experimenting with solvent free options - I started with Gamblins solvent free fluid as a replacement for W&N Liquin (the normal oil medium I use to moisten the brush and speed drying time) and I hate it... Does anyone have other suggestions for me to try (I have already gone through my pigments and limited a few harmful ones, and am wearing gloves as a precaution, it's mainly the solvents in mediums I haven't solved yet) To give more detail, I find the Gamblin medium very fat but somehow doesn't assist in paint movement - fat but tacky? it's a chore to work with. Pictured is one of my pieces to give you an idea of the finish I can get with the W&N Liquin

Master study of Frank Frazetta painting
I've been doing black and white studies in gouache and decided to do a master study of my favorite Frazetta painting before I moved on to color. I'll probably come back and make a few adjustments to this, but on the whole it was a great learning experience/confidence builder.

Some light fantastical world building paintings
I do digital paintings mostly from imagination. I've been developing a small fantastical world in an alternative history kind of way. I've been learning from Marco Bucchi's 10 minutes to better painting videos. I still haven't understood edges quite well but Craig Mullins's tutorial has helped. I painted all those in MyPaint (a very light painting software) and a surface pro 6 running linux. I'm mostly inspired by Alex Andreev, Fedor Titov and a lot of Russian artists.

My Digital Art Journey - The First 4 Months
Hi everyone, I'm fairly new to digital painting and have been practicing for a couple of months now. Here are a few works I've done since starting. A lot of them vary in style as I'm still experimenting with the capabilities of Photoshop, and I'm taking different courses that teach different approaches. Please let me know what you think and, of course, feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks and be safe, Gino

Landscape Painting
I wanted to learn to paint and decided to focus on landscape painting although most of my time spent drawing was focused on portraits. I painted one small landscape study a day. Most of the paintings are studies from Tiffanie Mang’s Tiny Big Worlds book. Found it to be a good way to learn to mix color and get comfortable with painting in general.

Character Illustration
Hello there everyone! I hope you are having a wonderful day. I recently did this painting of an OC. I am not really happy with it. The problem that I have been facing is The character does not feel like a cohesive part of the environment. I don't know if it's the lighting or the colors but the character feels like a sticker over the background If u guys could please help me with this, it would really mean a lot. Thank u for your time and please let me know of any other tips u might have.

Alex Ross Kingdom Come master study.
I've been working on this one for a little while. This is a gouache study of an Alex Ross painting. I'm trying to follow along with what I know about his process. In this book, "Mythology" he does a demonstration of his process where he does a black wash underpainting before he adds color. I'm just about done with the underpainting and will start on the color probably tomorrow.

CRITIQUE ME! Weekend head quick sketches
Hey, thanks for finding the time to stop by and view some of my quick sketches. Just a brief background... These are 30-45 minute digital head sketches done for practice. I've been painting traditionally consistently for the last 4 years or so but this is my first week of actually trying to learn to paint digitally. My goal for these sketches is to create somewhat believable heads from photo reference in the limited time frame to force myself to focus on large general shapes and forms. I did this also to familiarize myself with the digital workflow relative to traditional painting. The attached files of the individual heads are the ones I particularly liked the outcome for, but please feel free to critique any on the grouped spread. Thanks again in advanced for your generous advice. Take care. Your fellow artist friend, Gino

I Want More Style and Less Realism
So here is my latest portrait, this time of Evil Ed from Fright Night. I think the likeness came out accurately enough, but I’m not happy with the style. It almost looks like I took the photo and just added some smudges and effects. I don’t want so realistic a look, but I don’t want to lose the likeness, so how and where can I add more style and personal preference? As far as personal preference, I already changed the composition, made it greyscale, changed the brightness, contrast, and gamma. I made some adjustments to a couple of areas, blurred some areas to not distract from the focal point, and added some of my own detail in the eyes. After all that, it still ends up looking like I could have just photoshopped the actual photo and saved myself hours of rendering. Any general feedback or tips to overcome these specific issues would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! 🤓

Specifically, I still feel like my values, colors, and temperatures could be better. Here are my most recent ones. Any and all critiques are always welcomed though :)

I tried to give a sense of realisim on this painting, just by the color and not the perspective. I think that maybe I should have gone for less stylized shapes and tried more texturated ones.

New Painting: <Heroes, '42>
A recent painting I just finished a few days ago. Inspired by some lighting conditions of my school dormitory apartments. Also it's #marchofrobots so I figured let's just do a weird robot-ish piece :D Characters are still a bit wonky, I don't really plan to nail that down really accurately, but rather capture a mood. Overall, I think the global illumination/occlusion/reflections are a bit not there, because the colours of those two robots don't really want to mix pretty well, and the orangy secondary reflection don't show pretty well. Maybe because at early stages I didn't nail those down. Could use a bit more aggressive gesture on the wing on the far side tho. Done in MyPaint. Size ~11700px wide.
