Would like to get some initial feedback for this study of drawing a sad face. Don't mind the lack of the hand... I've haven't started studying it ^^".

"Final" piece... although there are still some parts that need work, I felt like it's time to move on to another work. In the end I had to ask "Did I capture the emotion?", because that's why I started this one. With that being said, any feedback would still be appreciated.

The emotions are captured really nicely The only think I would suggest is adding some anatomy to the neck, not much as you dont have to draw away the attention from the face, but at least some as it looks very unsettling.

This turned out pretty nice. The only thing I would do is lower the contrast in the hand to draw more attention to the face. Nice job.

I think it looks great. I think the emotion got captured with the muscles above her brow.

The update is quite an improvement. I see that you're refining the texture of the skin really well. Look for more subtle shades in the shadow areas and introduce a bit more dept. You may also want to not make the skin texture so smooth. If you look at the contrast between the eye lashing in your painting and the skin you will see that the eyelashes stand out really starkly against the super soft skin. In the photo that is not the case because the skin has texture. Other than that it's looking great, keep working! I'm excited to see the finished work. Hope that helps!

What you have is a good study. I would guess you've done a few emotion centered studies because you're capable of rendering emotion. You did well with her eyebrows - eyes and cheeks - tears. Have you tried a horizontal flip just to get a fresh look? You really have to work the whole portrait to capture the same exact emotion. Any alteration may still convey emotion but it wont be the same emotion as your reference. The thing with her hand is part of the emotional feel. In the photo she is a stoic sad. I would interpret her hands as symbolic of her struggling to keep her composure.

I really appreciate your compliment regarding rendering emotion. Haven't tried horizontal flip, mostly vertical. I do hope I'd be able to convey the same emotion (or at least come close) once I fully render her eyebrows and eyes. As for the hand, I agree. It does feel lacking without it. I actually have it turned off as a separate layer. I'd try to include in the piece but not render it that much as I think it might distract the viewer away from her face. Thanks a lot for your feedback! :D
