Quick digital paint sketches

I like to do quick digital painting 'sketches' to practice being loose during painting. I get asked a lot about my minimal brushstroke type of style, and this is one of my secrets to getting better at that style. I pick a theme, and then I do quick paint sketches to try to just capture likeness and emotion without using too many brush strokes. I don't try to get a lot of detail, actually I focus on the opposite. Here are a few of my examples. Comments welcome!

You captures the character very well! Less brush strokes gives more energy I think.

Duuuuude, I love these! 🤯 I would be so curious to see a time-lapse of your process cuz I have no idea how you put so much personality and life into it while being so efficient and stylish with your brush work.

Thanks @Tony! I don't have time lapse videos for these, but I do have several on my YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxLr4Juph5m4vjU-ThkLoLA

Love these! I've just started doing these too, but for the life of me I can't be "quick". It would take me a couple of hours to do a head. I start with line art though and that alone will take me at least half an hour to get the proportion correct. How long on average does each portrait take you? And did you go through similar experience as me when you first started? Any tips for me other than mileage?

Thanks!! I don't generally time these. I'm usually watching TV or something at the same time. On these I sometimes trace the quick layout, since the focus is on painting not drawing, and sometimes I just start painting. I would guess each face is in the 45 min to an hour time. I used to draw quick sketches over and over, so I tend to have some speed anyway. Mileage is really the best way to get faster. I checked out your work on IG... very nice!
