Colour Question: Dim Indoor Portrait (+Transitional Lighting/Subsurface Scattering)
Hey all, I've wrapped my brain into a bit of a knot trying to sort out the colour of light and it's effect on skin tones in dim indoor settings. I'd love it if someone could help me sort out what colour the shadow areas would have been in my attached mini example painting (Zelda), or explain some of the reference images' colours attached. (The post is a bit long, so no need to answer all questions, any help with this topic is appreciated!) - My Thought Process/More Specific Problem Points: If the figure was in moonlight, I think the expected colour is a greenish or blue ambient hue, and if they had a lamp or a warm light on I'd expect a yellowish or orange colour cast on them. (Correct me if i'm already wrong) In the referenced examples, characters are in indoor spaces without man-made lighting. All of them, despite the rooms and spaces not being overtly purple, have an ashy purple-ish tone to the skin. (This is where my brain gets all confused - how do I know the underlying skin's base colours!? Why purple?) My example image was trying for a block of brighter highlights as the sun gets lower (thinking, just before golden hour) streaming in a nearby window, and I initially mapped out transitional blocks where the light might come through ("1"). I made these light spots transition with a yellow/orange from the light getting lower in the sky. Do you think, since it is falling on the skin, I should have made this transitional shade a red colour only? If the light is relatively bright, even if only in the few mapped out spots, Is the problem that the rest of the face being in shadow is unrealistic? I also couldn't decide why the references all seemed roughly purple. If the indoor space is a white, grey, brown etc you'd think a simple brown/grey colour would be the main shadow colour, but I already knew that wouldn't look right. My current conclusion is the reference images look purpley and ashy due to a blue tinted cool lighting from remaining atmospheric colours from the sky outside (as there's no other lights to override the blue tone, even if they aren't directly exposed to the sky when indoors) and the purple is created through some subsurface scattering type effect where the redness of the skin is being enhanced? ie. weak remaining light is blue + redness of skin is showing through more = purple I also tend not to work in digital, so the colours i gave for examples ("2") aren't exactly the same ones I can mix on my palette, but the un-pictured middle stage gave me a very lifeless looking skin. How do you think the skin keeps some livelihood even in such ashy cool-toned settings? I tried just adding a warmer pink blush colour, but it was a bad patch for the problem which I later painted over. - Thank you if you read this far :) I hope to read your thoughts!

Treat Me Like I’m Stupid
No, seriously I mean that. Explain the basics and painting preliminary work to me like I’m stupid. I’ve included some art from League as a point of reference only. I know they’re digital but I’m confident I can get something close to the big splash art in acrylics it’s just getting there that I can’t figure out. I’m wanting to do fantasy style paintings (non-anime) like you see on MtG cards and in Warhammer and Warmachine/Hordes. Don’t get me wrong I like Frazetta’s art but not his style. First off: pencils. Everything related to using them that I’ve found online is generic typing or assumes I’m going for full graphite art for the most part. I found David Finch’s channel which lead me to other comic artists and I get why they recommend 2H and HB to achieve the results they do for the second image I just don’t want to go that route since I’m not a fan of how the final results are colored (her dress is two distinct red tones and black lined, good but probably a bit boring to do). Also, while impressive, I don’t like how comic sketches look without color (sorry, David). Other places I’ve seen recommend sketching with 2B or 4B for some reason. So my real question here is, what pencil should I use for my sketching (probably gonna draw it on sketch paper and then transfer it in some way)? Why? Further, would how I made the line or its weight actually matter if I’m gonna cover it up completely with paint like in the first image? Also, how far should I take the sketch before I start putting down paint? Once I get the lines down? Shadows blocked in? Ink. Really not sure it would be a needed supply. I know I’d need it to do something like the second image or if I was going for an ink only image. So worth it for the first image, skip it, or what? Figure. Time for some crunch. I know comic artists use “standardized” construction method like Loomis to achieve consistency since they need to repeat a character’s design. I also know that most fantasy artists lean more on references (live or still) to achieve what is likely a one off piece in a specific pose like the first pic. So where should I concentrate my efforts? Life/reference or construction? Does it really matter? I don’t want to waste time learning something like Loomis if I’ll never use it or drawing from life if I’m always constructing everything from the ground up and only referencing specific items (like a fox’s tail). Bonus: what is a “painterly” style? I’ve seen it in places and have no idea what it means. I know all this is subjective but that’s what is making it confusing, I’m very nuts and bolts like that. And yes, I do have painting experience, I’ve painted minis for years. I’m just tired of painting other people’s work. I want to be able to have an idea, commit it to paper, and eventually have it painted instead of conforming my ideas around what is available.

How do I remove lasso selection (marching ants in Clip Studio Paint?
In Photoshop command H is the keyword function to remove the lasso selection when you try to colour. I don’t know if there is something similar with Clip Studio Paint. It is distracting when you see the selection boundaries and trying to colour something. I want the selection boundaries hidden when I paint something on screen. I hope I’m making sense, it’s hard to describe. I use Clip Studio Paint because I own it and can’t afford Adobe subscriptions. Any advice is greatly appreciated

Looking for critique/feedback
Hi, I'm trying to improve my art skills as a 3D Artist. I would love some feedback for this piece that I'm working on which will be a 2.5D piece when it's done. The light source is from the top right side of the tree. I'm thinking of adding some yellow grass and tiny rocks to the ground part. This is a stylized project. Thank you in advance!

Trying to implement the edges control
So, I've posted it in some communities but no one has given their thoughts about what I am concerned about with the topic. I learned that the controlled edges could make a better painting, but I'm not sure what to consider which part is better to let loose or stay sharp, Do you have any thoughts or experience about it guys? Oh, but I appreciate any feedback anyway!! am forever thankful for it!!

Tips for going from traditional to digital :D
So i got some extra income and bought myself a drawing display. Ive tried a tablet couple of times but the hand eye disconnect was too much, especially with learning a new medium. Im gonna keep learning this between my other work, and i also like that i can paint digitally after a hard workday because i can save the picture and not worry about ruining it. Ive now had it for 2 days, and im loving it. Ive started ctrl+paint sites videos for how to use photoshop. This is my first try, just trying everything. I do it like i would traditional so i use my eye, dont trace (not that its wrong, im gonna try tracing for some master copies or something) and try to use brushes that feel oily. I gotta say, digital is not easy, the undo button and layers and other things are great but you have other things to fight. soo.. tips how to learn, tips to make these more organic, and what to avoid.

Watercolor value sketch
I've been taking online classes for watercolor for a few months now. It's not something that is coming easily, but I love the medium. I enjoy the struggle. Here is a value sketch I did last week where the water I paint is finally starting to look like water. Still a long ways to go, but I'm happy to celebrate whatever progress I can make.

Looking for critique
Trying to push a little further into finishing pieces and improve my rendering. (As well as everything else) The hat felt pretty weak compared to the rest, and the blade of the sword doesn't really pop as I had intended. Thoughts, critiques, things to work on all welcome.

Jorge Molina master copy
I really value copying artists that really know what they're doing, and Jorge really knows what he's doing. You can tell from this painting that he has a great understanding of values and how to use them. I enjoyed copying this very much :)

Color calibration/differences between screens.
So do you calibrate your monitors? I noticed quite big difference between my huion and phonescreen. This is natural of course, but i was wondering do you calibrate your drawing display so it matches with for example phones? Offcourse the viewers screen can be off a lot and you cant go and calibrate their screen lol. Im thinking of getting a spyderx colorimeter but dont know how important this is.

brush handling Brush choise
I recently started Ahmed Aldoori's Med's Map course. A first problem I have to deal with is the choice of brushes and the right techniques to use them. At first glance I cannot find a separate lesson about this anywhere in the course. Can anyone help me with a tip to a good tutorial on that subject? I am using the latest version of Procreate on an iPad pro OS 17.1.2. Thanks!

Norman Rockwell master study
I've been working on this one off and on for a while. I'm going to make one more pass on the heads and a few details then call it "done." I'm doing a few separate head studies just for practice before I start in on the painting. This is done in gouache using the Zorn pallete. I feel like it's taught me a lot about mixing colors.
