ASSIGNMENTS

As you decide where to place lost edges, consider these specific areas:

  • Shadows merging into dark backgrounds: This is a natural place to lose an edge to create depth.
  • Lights merging into light backgrounds: This can make highlights appear to glow.
  • Core shadows: You can remove a core shadow if the dark stripe between light and shadow provides too much volume or information for a specific area.
  • Distracting details: Remove information completely when small details, such as the sharp edges between teeth, distract from the main focal point.

For this project, you will be drawing a skull using the reference images provided.

Level 1

You will create a fully shaded drawing with a focus on deciding where to lose and find edges. Some reference photos have two light sources. This gives you opportunities to play with losing parts of the skull into a light background.

Don't be afraid to lose edges, find them again, and lose them again. This back-and-forth experimentation is how you discover what works.

Level 2

For a harder challenge, use the out-of-focus reference photos. Because the photos are blurry, you cannot simply copy the edges. You must interpret them to refocus attention on the center of the face. You are inventing the relationship between sharp, firm, and lost edges.

Recommended Materials

I recommend a pencil that allows you to utilize the side of the lead. You want to be able to quickly fill in areas and play with the edge freely. A sharp tip takes too long for this type of experimentation.

  • Graphite Pencil: Sharpen it longer so more lead is exposed.
  • Clutch Pencil: A 5mm lead works great.
  • Charcoal Pencil: This is often the best option because it allows for easy smudging.

Deadline - submit by February 05, 2025 for a chance to be in the critique video!

@deepanshu12
I feel like i am still having problems with my values, like keeping them neat and consistent. Because i am worried about my values i am not even thinking about the edges.

Hopefully back to drawing after a long break with a lot of things happening causing total distraction. A first try again - I followed along with Stan's demo for a while and then just kept going. (It became too detailed, I see now) This is on Strathmore toned tan paper with graphite. I'm still looking for the right paper for better results.

This is really well done! it honestly looks like a tatoo on someone arm lol. Good job! :)

Trying level 2 in procreate.

I think I forgot about loosing the edges... Damn it!

looks really good and I can spot a two lost edges, bottom corner of the cheek bone, back of teeth and top corner of left inner eye, both disappears into the dark tones inside the skull. :)

Here is my level 1 assignment.
Philippe Girard
love the construction and shading
@staffolis

despite the lost edges I can clearly see your skull shape. Very well done. If I may give you a critique/tip tough, I think the shading in some places could be smoother in terms of transitioning from light to shadow.

here's my level 1 assignment.

Love the teeth detail and the lost shadow on the back of the skull. I chose the same skull as you, because it showed a lot of the side mass, with lots of options for lost edges.

Here is my level 2. I think i managed just before the critique is being filmed. Because it’s in the middle of the night pt time but noon the day after here 😄

Graphite and charcoal attempts. Fantastic work everyone!!

So good - first is my favorite, neat and crisp and those interior lines and indications on the inside of the jaw…man, I’m gonna try to re-draw this for practice!

Those are just beautiful, love the line quality and variety.

Got busy with work that I was only able to do three attempts. The left and middle skull were done in graphite pencils using B,H, and 4B. The right bottom skull was done in ballpoint pen. This was a fun assignment and I was inspired by everyone fantastic artworks that I had to do my best and share my attempt. Thank you Stan for creating this course, it has helped me a ton! I look forward to whatever you create next! First image with skull solo: lvl 1 skull image 1. Second image: left skull level 1 skull image 5, right skull is level 2 image 5

You just knocked it out of the park with that 3rd one. I really like it.

Really like your third one with the shadow mapping!

Woohoo!! I caught up right before the end of filming! Here is my level 1 project. I tried to draw attention to the center of the skull by increasing the contrast there and decreasing it elsewhere. I also experimented with lost edges on the teeth to create interesting shapes. I think lost edges are so beautiful. (:

Nailed it!

Woah, this one is super cool. I love the selective details. Really draws the focus.

Here is my level 1! I rushed it a bit to make it in time for the deadline, so I might return to it at a later date. Regardless, I’m proud of what I have so far! Thank you Stan for this awesome series, and congratulations to everyone for making it to the end!

Final project of an amazing course! Thank you Stan and Proko team for making this course a reality. I live in India and that too in a very remote location where finding art educators is close to impossible. I cannot express in words how grateful I am to all of you for this course. Also, many thanks to the fabulous students here who were part of this journey. I will miss submitting assignments with you guys and waiting for the critique videos :( P.S. I did this in procreate.

Nice work! One thing to play around with on these is to really smudge out those lines to blend in with the background. Two particular places I think would serve well is on the top of the skull where the light hits, and the shadow where the skull is resting. I think in the light side case, you can make that line almost totally disappear to the white of the paper. Similarly in the dark side, use your finger or a piece of tissue and blend that line in with the shadow to get that ghostly, lost line effect.

Level 1 (#1, #2, #6) Level 2 (#1, #7) Noticed that I was making the cranium smaller than it shoud've been but decided not to worry about proportions and focused on shapes and edges. When it comes to teeth I wanted to strike a balance between lack and excess of detail so I tried to imply detail by using shadows and adding small amounts of simple detail around them.

This is my submission for this assignment. This is level 1, skull 1 flipped around. Conte 1710 B on newsprint paper. Critiques welcome.

I really like the lines leading into the skull, gives lots of energy in contrast to the tight detail. I think the cheek bone could be softened a little more to give it more of a curved box form.
Moyra Le Blanc Smith
I drew all 15 of the ugly blighters! Sorry Skelly. The first was on rough sketchbook paper so I couldn’t blend. Then I switched to copy paper. Graphite. I deliberately avoided detail in the teeth cos I don’t like them. I tried to keep the focus on the eye and nose sockets. thanks for the amazing course.

Holy cow I caught up on the course just in time for a critique! I did some ink sketches to warm up, Here was my attempt at a level one. Playing with edges is fun but oh boy are values difficult. I'm sure the next one will be better.

Played with this a little more and now I'm much happier with it

Can anyone help me find the edges I lost? Ouch, really not funny!

I really like the line on the left that separates the page from the skull.
