What's in Premium?
This lesson introduces a two-level warmup for creating gradations with texture. First, we'll cover 2D patterns like hatching, cross-hatching, and scumbling. You'll practice controlling value by adjusting the density and thickness of your lines.
Then, we'll move to level two: rendering 3D textures. I'll show you how to think about materials like tree bark, fur, and fish scales as they wrap around a form. We'll break down how to draw their tiny forms, form shadows, and cast shadows to create convincing surfaces. This exercise will improve your line quality and help you reveal form with confident, intentional strokes.

Fantastic exercises. So much more easy-going execution than when I did this with the DrawABox Challenges.
I note that, without intention, my marks become pretty sloppy. Some marks are easier than others. If I don’t use my whole arm to make straight marks, they are not straight.
Level 1, created using a variety of pens. I experimented with a few Moebius-inspired gradients, which turned out to be quite interesting - I might explore more of them.
Hey I am making some fictional creatures for a story could anyone critique them. The creatures are fish-people and lizard people
Hi Wesley, I would summit this at a character design course, Here you can get a critique on line, form, perspective and shading. But I think that focusing on those in your drawings are missing the point of them being character designs.
I really liked the character design course on Proko and would recommend the figure drawing course. Good luck, you obviously are having some fun ideas.
Probably late for this.
Been a while since I did anything with a fineliner. Staedler 0.7.
After drawing several strips and throwing them away, I kept these. It was more playing, see what happens. (I have to practice more with simple lines, I know)
Four strips are with pencil, two digital. Those with no regular pattern I tried to give depth and when you squint I hope there's some transition from dark to light.
The first strip was inspired by Javier Jaen's illustration 🤩 see second image.
Everyone seems to be thanking Stan in the comments...is the course ending?
Stan will it be a sequel to this course?
I think he mentioned in a livestream that he was thinking of doing a workshop after taking a break but I’m not sure .
Finally caught up. Here's what I did. Tried multiple patterns. One thing I noticed is that my value gradations generally don't look uniform when I squint.
