LESSON NOTES
What's in Premium?
In the full lesson, I demonstrate how to invent core and cast shadows on a complex flat-lit arm. You'll see my process for choosing a light source to create a dynamic shadow pattern that reveals form. I'll show you how to simplify complex anatomy into basic shapes to make shadow mapping manageable, how to use firm and soft edges to describe bone versus muscle, and how to layer complexity. The goal is to create a line drawing that feels three-dimensional before you even start shading tone.

Another demo inventing shadow mapping from a flat-lit photo. I'll imagine a light source, then map out the core and cast shadows to describe the underlying 3D forms. The key is to simplify the complex muscles into basic blobs and simple forms first. This makes it much more manageable to map out the core shadows and cast shadows.
I am actually drawing after months, but I liked every second of sketching these because all semester I was frustrated doing paintings. These were so awesome. By the way, nice tutorial as always.
I think I missunderstood the level 2 assignment? I thought we were supposed to fill in the shadows after the shadow mapping. I looked at what others did and did that 🙃
Flat light makes me think of when I used to ski downhill and was in the alpes and it was flat light. Everything looks flat but suddenly a bump you can’t see and you fly a bit 😅
