LESSON NOTES
What's in Premium?
This lesson adds a new warmup to your routine for practicing clean gradations, a crucial skill for good shading. I'll show you how to build pressure control, stroke consistency, and patience. We'll practice short, medium, and long gradations using both the tip and the side of your pencil. You'll learn how to create smooth transitions without visible steps or scratchy texture. I'll also cover how to make individual strokes with sharp, firm, and soft edges.

Im using free space from my sketchbook for my gradations. One benefit I’ve noticed from posting my work: I often see things I don’t see in person. So, it helps my growth.
Do you have any strategies or resources for learning to work with charcoal. I tend to be really heavy handed so all charcoal seems dark. Even when I think I am being light, all I get is spottiness.
My gradations warmup page. In general, I find tip of the pencil easier for sharp edges and side of the pencil easier for smooth edges (the fact that each "stroke" is longer helps, I think). One thing I noticed is that it's easier for me to fade out my gradations than to start from a very light value -- that is, my very first stroke tends to be slightly darker than what I can do.
I’m testing charcoal pencils for first time. I sharpened it like in the video but the point just breaks. At first i had 1 Faber castell medium and one hard. Medium felt mor difficult to sharpen and to not break it so i kept on with the har one but it breaked to. I order 5 more hard because i figured it will go so material learning this. Now i just got the new ones and i thought i will give it another go! Sharpened it..looked nice! I did one stroke. Looked pretty good. Started a new stroke and it breakes.i didnt even pushed hard. Anyone with same problem? What do I do wrong?
So far my 6b faber castel 3mm led mechanical pencil is most fun for this warm up.
How can we make stokes like ones Stan did at 3:13~3:18? I tried several times but what I did doesn't look right. I made dark parts first and then added soft gradation with a well-sharpen 4B charcoal pencil. on printing paper.
Are you referring to these strokes.
I find them difficult.
It looks like Stan is controlling the index finger pressure with the movement.
The Dark stroke first and then releasing the index finger pressure for the second lighter stroke., two strokes.
Then I think he explains do the same in one stroke.
followed with.....in his own words ... "Yikes" !
The "Yikes" ... I understand.
:)
Stan, thanks for the warmup reminder.
I keep overlooking the warmup exercises throughout the course.
The values section is amazing.
:)
As for the sharp to soft edge in one stroke...yeah I do that on accident sometimes, call it a "happy accident" when it looks good.
