This took me way longer than I anticipated. A solid 2 hours with charcoal and I can still see issues.
What was particularly challenging were the half tones. They tended to end up much darker than I planned. Need to introduce much more subtlety.
I like that around min 11:00 you can see him gesturing with his eraser presumable narrating for a video :D
watching this timed session really helped ive noticed my improvement from my pervious one, i think spending more time working the halftones is something thatll help me more
Here’s the sphere. Deciding the values relative darkness to each other continues to be a challenge. I feel the halftones came out darker than they should be.
thanks for any comments.
Taking nearly an hour to render a sphere isn't typical online content 🤣
Very much appreciate Stan posting the entire process in real time. I learned a lot from the video, but there is much more yet to understand about values and shading.
Hey all!! I just went along with Stan’s demo and this was fun!! I say though I do need to still practice plain changes. Tell me what you guys think!
Quick question on the cast shadow - I’ve tried to draw this foreshortened (thinking in perspective terms) so that the long axis mid-point line is offset slightly toward the far side of the cast shadow, with the edge of the far side less curved also….in the demo it looks like Stan has done opposite and I think that is because of the direction the light is hitting the sphere. So I’m probably misunderstanding how to bring perspective and light on form together - in the image attached I can now see the cast shadow is placed wrong with respect to the light source, and that was done thinking too much about perspective. Any tips?
Great demonstration (cool tunes as well). I drew along with the video and there were many "Oh, so that's how its done" moments. Obviously, I need to practice and consolidate, but I feel like there has been an achievement unlocked.
I feel like this is an improvement on my previous one. Focusing on the contour line helped. Not sure about the highlight though.
Amazing Sphere, it's like a White Billiard Cue Ball.
Thanks for the Demo..
Was the demo drawn with the paper vertical or flat on a table?
What's you thoughts with that respect?
I noticed in your previous project video the cast shadow was drawn as an ellipse
as you show here too. It kinda went wrong for me because the sphere looks like it was rolling off the cast shadow.
What determines the shape of the highlight?
This sphere shows it as a square, I thought it would be round in shape because the shape is round or is it more to do with a reflection?.
Thanks Again.
Oh wow you actually do an ellipse around the sphere to set the direction of the core shadow. I'll keep this in mind for future exercises.

I usually jump straight into defining the edge of the core shadow because I'm often dealing with more complex forms like deltoids, cheekbones, or hamstrings.. It's more logical to consider the plane change and shape design of the core shadow in those cases. But with a simple sphere, constructing it as an ellipse makes sense.
This looks great, I recommend just trying to have your pencil go in a singular direction for a seamless gradient.
