I have always liked notans; something striking about them. And a good learning tool. Thank you for including them, as most schools just hit on them quickly and move on.
Maybe you don't notice, but I have not done much since I signed up with you. This is because life suddenly got in the way, But I enjoy watching snippets here and there, and getting your emails, Good stuff. Thanks so much, and be prosperous and joyful. nancy

I've been doing some studies of three personal favorites: Zandomenighi (from the Macchiaioli movement), Monet, and the Hildebrandt Brothers. Not focusing on details was tough, and working with only two values proved especially challenging. Sometimes I genuinely couldn't figure out where darks and lights should go. That said, it was a really fun challenge that made me appreciate these masters even more!
I tried "Return of the Fleet" like 5 times before watching your solution, I'm glad to see that its a "complex" solution in general, I was banging my head thinking "I bet Stan will solve it with 5 elegant shapes, I need to simplify more!"
I don’t know that I’ve learned from many instructors as much as I learn from you. I finally hit my one year art anniversary, though I’ve drawn 10 of those 12 months due to neuro/health issues. :D I dived from nothing straight into the anatomy course - both a horrid and a wonderful idea in the end, as it forced me to face my fears, using this course and Marshall’s lectures. I went from zero to being able to draw bodies even from imagination a little bit. I’m so so grateful to you, you have no idea. Lots of instructors skip over things you cover that help me finally understand stuff I struggle with and I’m so visual in my learning that I need to see you do things to get it. You’re so indispensable, thank you for all you do 🥹 When I realized we would be tackling values too I was so happy.
That s truly inspiring to me, now I want to do more of these...
In the last thumbnail of the demo, I start seeing the subtle difference between values in the painting now. Thank you very much for the demo and the painters that you introduced in this assignment.
As soon as I had a pencil in my fingertips, I forgot to remember that details aren't for this assignment. This demo helped me recall that, thank you!
I got it we have to fill value only in other than specular reflections, than darken those values as w ego ahead.
I was struggling with this exercise today and gave up, because the result looked weird for me. After watching two first thumbnails made for Rembrandt now I see it really should look like that. I only began with too many details, but generally I understood the assignment well. By the way, I've almost fallen asleep watching the first part - the music was so relaxing.
