Trial and error. It’s not easy to let go of what the reference gives. I like the last two digital trials. I was hoping the last one with markers would have turned out better.
LESSON NOTES

What's in Premium?

In this lesson, we explore value compositions with thumbnails using gray markers, simplifying the shapes using 3 values. Working from a reference photo, we manipulate value ranges to experiment with different arrangements. Focusing on major value masses, we quickly sketch multiple thumbnails without getting into details. We analyze how adjusting values affects composition, mood, and focal points, and consider how to apply these techniques to larger projects.

Not directly on topic. But because you mentioned gel pens. I have a question. I bought a lot of white gelpens to have a bunch. But they all dried out. Why? And is it possible to undry them? Wich liquid if so? Some kind of alcohol?

DId a quick search for "Fixing Dry Gelpens". Some youtube videos and other posts might help you out.
