Project - Simplify to CSI

Course In Progress

Download the photo reference images and try to simplify them using CSI lines. Draw each line with a focused and intentional path.

Your pace should be quick, but not rushed.

For this exercise, we will just consider the individual segments of the contour of a shape.

Same instructions for level one and two. Just a difference in difficulty of reference. The level two photos have more fun little tidbits to tempt you to get into the details, but fight the urge and simplify.

Also, no shading in these please. This is not meant to be a portfolio piece.

C = C Curves
S = S Curves
I = Straights

Level 2 before watching the demo! I felt more confident drawing these, especially after the boots 😅😂

Drawing Basics- Project-Simplify to CSI. I thought I did fairly well, moving quickly, although the shoelaces almost had ME tied up in knots! Drawing animals is my "happy place". Drew the pictures, then watched Stan's Demo. I'll watch the Critique tomorrow- time for sleep!

I did the snail three times. The first one was definitely too detailed and rough. After that I checked other people's works and had a better idea of the goal in mind. Overall Im happiest with the third one. The boots was a whole other challenge. If it didnt have the laces I feel like I had a better grasp of its overall shape than with the snail but the laces through the whole thing into whack. Im glad I challenged myself but it was definitely a challenge. I want to try again with more knowledge after seeing the critique video. And would love any input from the community!
@androida
I think you caught the shape of the right boot really well and the angle between them both is good, they are both definitely coming towards the viewer. The one on the left looks a little narrow towards the top, faintly boxing the shape out is something I find helpful. Sweet laces on the right one too. Lover the progress with the snail! The shell could probably be a bit rounder like you had in the first attempt. Good going with the line quality improvements through out
@androida
Simplified too much. Wasn't sure if the laces should be all drawn or not - I think the boots were the most difficult. Outlining a box area helped a bit with the overall shape. I haven't watched the demo yet.

These are really solid.

I think you did great on the boots. You really nailed the overall shape of the boots. Im with you though, it was hard! Great job!
Andrew Reed
This assignment was definitely more challenging than I anticipated 😅. Especially the boots! I feel like I might have lost myself in the laces a bit, but overall feeling pretty good about the results!
Joe Burris
The boots kicked my butt too! I think your laces look fantastic though. I also like how you solved the visible underside of the shell on the snail. Great job!

I like how it turned out!

OMG!!!! Felt like I was on a roll after the camel and just kept going! Still not sure how I pulled this off. Must have been in the zone or something because this is easily one of the best things I’ve ever drawn! I’m sure there are a ton of mistakes but I’m too happy to notice them right now! Saved the initial block in because it felt like something was clicking for me at that point and was afraid I was going to screw it up.

You are on a roll! Nice work, keep up the momentum!

Either I learned something along the way or I just really suck at shoelaces because this assignment just seemed easier for me. Haven’t watched the camel demo yet.

I think you nailed the expression on his face

Haven’t watched the demo yet. Found the laces too challenging to unravel. So I tried simplifying by making them black and just filling them in. Curious to find out if there’s a trick to doing this because it seemed very difficult for a first project. Added my snail. Probably better to try that one before the boots.
Merry Lee Sharin
I think you were right to shade in the laces! I found myself getting cross-eyed trying to figure out which line belonged to which lace. Your laces have a lot of expression- they've been through a rough day!

I had no idea how to start drawing the boots; I just went blank... So I watched the demo. I made the one on the left with Proko's advice and the other one I made it on my own once I felt more confident :)) I indeed need to practice more on how to simplify complex objects. I'll try level 2 once I got the time!

Beautiful lines here @Blane Nasveschuk. I like how you varied the line weight as well. Nice work.

that was really challenging but truly fun!!! I'm glad I made it

Shoe laces unfortunately were too challenging for me right now. I will attempt to re-draw the boots with laces after a bit more practice with line work and drawing real-life objects from observation. Nevertheless lines topic is so very interesting, a lot of insights even in one lesson. Any feedback is appreciated a lot, thank you.

Simplify to CSI Lines. Quite complex on these boots

First and second tries for the Snail and the Boots. The laces were really tricky to do, even with the demo, for the first attempt I approached the laces with 'C' and 'S' curves for the left boot and then with the right, I attempted more straights.
Melanie Scearce
These are really stylish!
