Project - Simplify to CSI

Course In Progress

Download the photo reference images and try to simplify them using CSI lines. Draw each line with a focused and intentional path.

Your pace should be quick, but not rushed.

For this exercise, we will just consider the individual segments of the contour of a shape.

Same instructions for level one and two. Just a difference in difficulty of reference. The level two photos have more fun little tidbits to tempt you to get into the details, but fight the urge and simplify.

Also, no shading in these please. This is not meant to be a portfolio piece.

Had a bit of a struggle. Trying to find a balance of simplification along with allowing the shape and form to develop was hard for me, felt as if my depth was off.

This was a challenge. I'm definitely level 1. Still, I'm trying to do the level 2 assignments too. Somehow, the level 2 camel was less intimidating for me, than the level 1 boots.. For the boots, I needed to darken the laces to clear up the mess in my head. At some point, I was not sure what was supposed to be the lace and what was supposed to be background, anymore. The snail showed me, that my straight lines need to improve. The bord seems to have more curves than the snail itself, in my drawing XD I still need to do the skull.

Hi, will try to watch the demo and repeat, not easy especially the shoelaces but after 2-3 rough sketches have this.

This is looking great!

The boots were chalenging, especially the proportions, it took me a lot of time to get it relatively accurate. But at the end I'm happy with the result 😁

Definitely see more confident simplification choices and linework. Great work!

i was in learning to sketch from imagination lesson but i just think my line is too scratchy and i tried everything to avoid the chicken line, exercise, elbow up, didnt try to stroke with finger as much as i want to. is there anything i could do to help this irritating problem? I feel stuck.

Anyone else really struggling? I don't know when to make my lines lighter or darker
Melanie Scearce
It's a process of narrowing down from general to specific, and light to dark. If I would approach this drawing, I would start with a very very light and general "envelope" that maps out the general proportions. You can see I made the shell a bit too tall in my first sketch, so when I moved on to the next step in making things more specific, I adjusted it. I didn't need to erase anything because the envelope is so light it will fade to the back when I place my final lines. Hope that helps :)

Level 1 snail. The noticeable flaw that pops out right away is the shell not having depth. How can I improve?
Felipe Godoy
Here's my attempts on level 1. I think I did quite well on the snail, but I messed up on the boots. The position of the boot on the right is off and I lost myself when trying to draw the shoelaces. Please critique and if you have any advice to help me fix it feel free to share.

An attempt.

Here's my snail. The ridges on the shell were tough to get as small C curves. I'm a little wobbly today on my straight lines. I didn't erase the under drawing so my construction process shows through. I suppose if I inked in drawing, that's when I would erase the under drawing. It was a fun exercise! Looking to do the boots next!
Steve Smythe
Forgot to add the horizon line of the board! Much better. The difference one little line makes. :-D

Here are my attempts at this project. Definitely feel like there is room for imrpovement. Especially the camel gave me a really hard time. I noticed at the end that I push my pencil too hard, so I'm going to try to focus on that from now on. Any other critique is very much welcome!
Melanie Scearce
I agree, i think you can work on loosening up on your pencil a bit. You have a great eye for proportions, so take a bit of the pressure off yourself to get perfect lines on the first try and start very lightly, ‘search’ for the right line. You’ll pull more energetic, gestural strokes that way. These are looking great though, keep up the good work!
