My third attempt. This time I focused more on finding the 3D forms, I tried to to bring out the depth and structure of the beard more. It was an interesting exerice but keeping the value system intact wasn’t easy.
I’d love to hear tips on simplifying this process. Also advice on how to make the volume and movement within the beard more clear.

I tried level 1 again, but this time using the frontal view of the sculpture. I found it more challenging to separate light from dark in the front view compared to the side view. I had to make a lot of corrections with the eraser, so I hope the five values are still clearly visible.
Proko, could you explain in the demo how to represent the movement in the beard using only the five values?

I tried level 1, and I found that shading the lighter areas was the most challenging part.

To not further confuse my images… I added a bit of weight to the rhino back leg and saved it as a png… so it can be viewed larger…It is funny, once i see it posted I do realize that with the light more from the lower left the back end could be darker too… very interesting to do this imagining the light from a different place.
