I got a little too precious with the boots once I tried to simplify the laces.
LESSON NOTES

This exercise will help you avoid chicken scratch. Instead of uncertain pecking at the paper. We're going to draw each line with a focused and intentional path. Remember to draw from your shoulder, elbow and wrist. Avoid the fingers. When I tell you guys to simplify your lines, I'm usually referring to three types of lines, two curves and one straight.

ASSIGNMENTS

Download the photo reference images and try to simplify them using CSI lines. Draw each line with a focused and intentional path.

Your pace should be quick, but not rushed.

For this exercise, we will just consider the individual segments of the contour of a shape.

Same instructions for level one and two. Just a difference in difficulty of reference. The level two photos have more fun little tidbits to tempt you to get into the details, but fight the urge and simplify.

Also, no shading in these please. This is not meant to be a portfolio piece.

CSI
C = C Curves
S = S Curves
I = Straights

If you'd like to have a chance to be included in the upcoming critique videos, you must submit your drawings below by February 16th

I think i could have simplified more on the boots, but overall pretty happy with how my attempts turned out!

I did the snail first which went better than the boots and I also found the image more interesting. Proportions are a bit off for the boots and the shoelaces gave me a headache. I‘m still struggling with confident lines, and I hope that will improve with practice.
Vergil Senpai
These are my attempts drawing all levels. I think i misunderstood something at level1 and made it a little complicated on myself. So in the later levels i broke it down to a simple shape first and then went working on it further. Originally I wanted to have them all in one page in my sketchbook but didn't had enough space. That made me realize the importance of taking the time to make sure your subject has enough space to fit in. It feels like i cheated drawing the camel by not having to draw the foot. So in the last level i took a whole page for the drawing. It was a little frustrating trying to draw all the levels with injuries on my right arm that i got from work. So to all that are reading this. Take care of yourself. Make pauses if you have to and take your time. Stay healthy.

Nice work, your line confidence and quality is superb!

First attempt prior to watching demo. I originally tried simplifying the snail's shell to a single rectangle, but that was far too much simplification lol. I struggled with proportions a lot here as well.
Richard Boyd
I seem to be making things taller than the original subject; any suggestions on how to avoid this? Also like most everyone else the shoe laces drove me crazy.
Ben Kraske
Using the envelope method of laying in a basic shape can help you adjust any proportional issues before you start laying in more lines - Stan shows this method in the demo for this lesson! These both are looking good!
Toine Berntzen Ljungberg
This was really fun but I admit I lost patiens with the shoelaces in the end and ”simplified” them a lot more ;)
Corey Walker
Definitely failed to simplify this drawing first time around. Funny thing is, it took me a span of 2-3 days of careful drafting and ruminating to say first drawing is “done” (even knowing perfection was not the goal). Second drawing took maybe ten minutes after watching demo and got roughly same results 😆. I need to let go more.
Ben Kraske
Great results! It'll only get easier from here too! :]
@erinbentley
Sort of ran out of room for the snail haha. Some things are a little off on the shoes but I was trying to focus more on the lines which is something I hadn’t usually thought of before!

the boots were challenging but i enjoyed the process in the end :)
Oliver Fyrsteborg
I found it quite challenging, especially because I kept thinking I had to be fast. I’m not a fan of my proportions, but I thought it was a fun task, and I’d like to know how I did.
Dylan Barr
A few things I found particularly challenging: - actually committing to the line - deciding where to actually start beyond the horizontal lines for the wood - what lines to include and to exclude (the shadows around the base of the shell and the body, the lines on the parts of the shell) I started the boot right after but got overwhelmed deciding how to begin. Will come back to it!
Vic Guzman
I think it looks pretty good to be honest. I’m still learning so unfortunately the only advice I can offer is to keep at it.
@virus_kid
Got my proportions completely wrong and did not leave enough room for the second boots, also got completely lost when it came to the laces. Going to rotate my paper going forward probably and reattempt after the demo.
Dawn Skinner
Simplify to CSI - I tried to capture the large shapes and indicate the organic patterns of those large shapes on the snail's body.
Cesar Espinoza
Camel – Level 2. Again, I ran out of space before I could finish the legs. I need to improve the measurements and proportions.
Brayden Brigman
Before watching critique video and walkthrough proportions are off but lines felt ok. Definitely had a rough time on curvy lines i just need to be more confident on! Any advice is welcome

This exercise taught me that long straights aren't my favorite lol, but the C's definitely are.
Charisse Varga
Snail and Boots pre-demo. Shoelaces were a bit tricky but they work
Cesar Espinoza
Level two: the skeleton 😂. Honestly, making the boot laces was harder than making this skeleton.
Scarlett S
The laces were definitely the hardest part for me out of any of these, the skull also gave me trouble I think because I started with the hat instead of the face.
