I got a little too precious with the boots once I tried to simplify the laces.
LESSON NOTES

This exercise will help you avoid chicken scratch. Instead of uncertain pecking at the paper. We're going to draw each line with a focused and intentional path. Remember to draw from your shoulder, elbow and wrist. Avoid the fingers. When I tell you guys to simplify your lines, I'm usually referring to three types of lines, two curves and one straight.

ASSIGNMENTS

Download the photo reference images and try to simplify them using CSI lines. Draw each line with a focused and intentional path.

Your pace should be quick, but not rushed.

For this exercise, we will just consider the individual segments of the contour of a shape.

Same instructions for level one and two. Just a difference in difficulty of reference. The level two photos have more fun little tidbits to tempt you to get into the details, but fight the urge and simplify.

Also, no shading in these please. This is not meant to be a portfolio piece.

First attempts pre demo. Not too unhappy although like everyone found the laces tough, especially with Stan’s remit of CSI. Not sure how much I followed that when tackling the fiddliest bits. Most pleased with the camel as corrected a lot to get proportions etc in line but finally got there. Happy to get feedback and connect with fellow artists

My Level 1 Sketches, open to all critiques, how could I have done better.

Level 1 sketches. The boots and those laces got me very confused 😮‍💨
Chuck Ludwig Reina
Yeah those laces are tricky! But well done on both of these. One note: you are a curvy artists. Some artists are more curvy, others more straight lines. I too am a curvy artists. One trick, and one of the great things we learn in these CSI exercises, is to start adding some straight lines to your curves. This will help give the form a bit more solidity. I found it really helped my sketching. Nice work! Keep on drawin'!

was def a lot more manageable than the boots for me lol

The remaining assignments for the CSI. This was way more interesting than the boots. Anybody else agree?
@ghostpuff
First attempt at the snail, I've been busy with work so A little slow on lessons at the moment. Hoping to be able to have some more time now to keep going on with the project. I have a hard time with straight lines, the bit of wood was a challenge I didn't want to just grab a straight edge or ruler to cheat on that bit. I think it came out okay for my first try.
@ebonyreyes
This is my drawing before watching the demo. I'm having a hard time keeping my hand loose with the pencil and being more fluid with my lines. Who else had trouble with the laces??

From the comments here, everyone did! I tried to keep fluidity and straight / curved lines throughout but for the laces I found this pretty much impossible. Haven’t watched the demo yet so interested to see how Stan tackles that and what he recommends

found the shoelaces to be pretty dang difficult

nice!
@ebonyreyes
nice job! the laces were so hard for me! what about you?
@janabouma
Gave up after one boot because the laces gave me a headache. The Level 2 camel was much easier than the Level 1 boots!
@ebonyreyes
thanks for sharing! now that you've said this, I will attempt the camel. I was going to skip it :D
@natsfufu
starter! will be doing the rest in a bit after my vacation, the lines might be a bit shaky but I feel like it looks less stiff and nicer like that? the laces were SO HARD to draw i could barely see what I'm drawing..
Melanie Scearce
Really nice simplification! You nailed it 👍
@gavinotheelf
Think I did pretty well on the snail, but struggled on the shoes
Melanie Scearce
Awesome work! The shoes are tough. I think you handled them very well. Your CSI choices are solid. I noticed your lines are pretty thick, and I'm curious how you make them. Are you making lots of strokes to create that thickness?
@janabouma
Yeah, I got one boot figured out before I went cross-eyed struggling with the laces. Nice work!

Ran out of time! The laces were killers!

Rocky J Squirrel -Project #3-Whoops-Not sure which project this was after all! I'l have to do the CSI line project now!
@oxymonacanthus

Tried to stick to the spirit of the lesson, using the three line types.
Ben Kraske
Looking good! One thing I notice is that you have some parts with some dark overlapped lines, which can make the result look a bit messy. In the next few lessons, you'll be going over ghosting strokes and using searching lines, which I think will help you in creating a cleaner looking drawing, even just a sketch. Keep up the great work!

this camel has personality! nice!
Balaperdia
I drew the snail twice because the first one didn't convince me, and I'm not entirely happy with this one either... The next day I did the boots and was mentally fried by the time I finished the laces. Finally, I drew the camel in literally five minutes—it probably turned out badly, but I'm really not good at simplifying things and end up spending more time than necessary. If I’d known I could create my own guides, it might have been less chaotic... but I only discovered that when I watched the demo :( On top of that, I’ve always drawn on paper, and now I’m working digitally; that’s frustrating too, because I don't feel comfortable with the canvas and the stylus.
