I got a little too precious with the boots once I tried to simplify the laces.
LESSON NOTES

This exercise will help you avoid chicken scratch. Instead of uncertain pecking at the paper. We're going to draw each line with a focused and intentional path. Remember to draw from your shoulder, elbow and wrist. Avoid the fingers. When I tell you guys to simplify your lines, I'm usually referring to three types of lines, two curves and one straight.

ASSIGNMENTS

Download the photo reference images and try to simplify them using CSI lines. Draw each line with a focused and intentional path.

Your pace should be quick, but not rushed.

For this exercise, we will just consider the individual segments of the contour of a shape.

Same instructions for level one and two. Just a difference in difficulty of reference. The level two photos have more fun little tidbits to tempt you to get into the details, but fight the urge and simplify.

Also, no shading in these please. This is not meant to be a portfolio piece.

Here are my CSI assignment submissions. I switched from Affinity to Procreate this time. I have to admit that I spent a lot of time on these, so I have to find solutions to cut down on time and improve on efficiency. I also did rough sketching layers beneath, and therefore I’m not sure if I’m supposed to not do that for these assignments. i have to admit that I went damn near nuts drawing those shoelaces 😂. Looking forward to critique and tips. Sketched in Procreate on my 12.9 iPad Pro.

These look terrific. Nothing wrong with doing sketches. Don't be afraid to keep them in though. The sketchy lines underneath give so much energy. In fact, what I would recommend for cutting down on time is to allow yourself to just tune up the sketches a little and not go in to totally clean things up. Learning to draw is so much about milage. Anything you can do to get more drawings done the better. When working on assignments like this especially, don't worry about making it perfect if it's chewing up a ton of time. Again, nice work. Keep at it!

I just submitted mine a few days ago-using graphite pencils . I agree on the laces; I’m now wearing slip on sketchers ; just kidding but it was tedious. im new to drawing; however, i think your drawings look great. Very clear lines and proportions. i like reading everyone’s comments and questions. We all seem to have similar questions. keep it up!!

Great job with the assignment. I’m new and just submitted my drawings a few days ago. Great course so far. i like your proportions and your lines in relationship to others. Pretty accurate. keep up the work

This was tough but I had fun with it. I feel like the laces on the boots got very messy, and I'm having some trouble gauging proportions, but I feel like if I did it again I'd have an easier time

My attempt at the level 1 snail. I really don’t know with this one, something just seems so off.
Chuck Ludwig Reina
Looks good to me. One thing you can try for future is to find your lines a little more loosely. Just the faintest marks on the paper as you're sketching it in, and then only at the end add those dark lines. This will allow you to keep the energy this has, while also playing with line weight. Keep it up!

Alright, moving on. Progress is slow but I'm happy I'm doing this. Struggled through it but srsly, it feels sooo good to get it done. Obviously not perfect but neither am I going to beat myself over it. Just having fun - with a pinch of seriousness to it. :) I've got to say - I'm definitely having trouble gauging proportions. Believe that's not something I should be overly fussing over at the moment.

Have been drawing every day since starting the class.

Really happy with how these turned out and honestly surprised myself!

Very nice!
@jennarambles
Really happy with how these turned out, really challenging but after watching the level 1 demo I made a few changes. Also felt like using what I learned from Project 1 demos and critiques to shade the camel

Nice! One thing I might suggest is to work a bit bigger. It's okay to take up the whole sheet for the boots or the snail. This will help you really think about the shapes and also train you to draw with your whole arm and not just your hand. Cheers!

I did my best. I will be grateful for any advice
Chuck Ludwig Reina
Nice work! You do a great job with your curvy lines. On piece of advice I find helpful for drawings like this, especially when there is so much curve, is to find some straight lines and add them into the drawing. Mixing curves with straights will really help bring out the feeling of structure in your drawings. Good stuff!

Not sure if I didn’t simplify enough? But here’s my snail.
