I got a little too precious with the boots once I tried to simplify the laces.
LESSON NOTES

This exercise will help you avoid chicken scratch. Instead of uncertain pecking at the paper. We're going to draw each line with a focused and intentional path. Remember to draw from your shoulder, elbow and wrist. Avoid the fingers. When I tell you guys to simplify your lines, I'm usually referring to three types of lines, two curves and one straight.

ASSIGNMENTS

Download the photo reference images and try to simplify them using CSI lines. Draw each line with a focused and intentional path.

Your pace should be quick, but not rushed.

For this exercise, we will just consider the individual segments of the contour of a shape.

Same instructions for level one and two. Just a difference in difficulty of reference. The level two photos have more fun little tidbits to tempt you to get into the details, but fight the urge and simplify.

Also, no shading in these please. This is not meant to be a portfolio piece.

If you'd like to have a chance to be included in the upcoming critique videos, you must submit your drawings below by February 16th

I did the boots 3 times: one time before the demo, one time after the demo and one more after watching the critique video. At this point I'm doubting everything to be honest and can't assess my work objectively. Any feedback would be great, thank you!

tried drawing the snail, but can’t seem to get proportions right. Any tips how? Also any other tips are appreciated too (especially for the boots, I don’t even know where to start 😭)
Melanie Scearce
Like Larry said below, the course will go more in depth with proportions and measuring later on, so don't stress too much about it right now...though it does help to have the object roughed in so you can really focus on your CSI lines for this project. You can try the envelope method, where you use very simple, light lines to indicate the basic overall shape of what you're drawing. This stage is where you should do any erasing and moving lines around that you need to do, because at this point you won't have poured hours of work into making good lines.

I wouldn’t overthink it. Just jump into it and try drawing it. You can then later watch the demo process video from Stan and analyze how he does it, better yet draw along with him that way you will remember it better and you are training many cognitive aspects of drawing. The only way to get better is to draw and have fun.

I know how you feel. Just follow the process and try, then problem solve. I’m just on 29/185 and learning from each. Proportions will be coming soon; we are just working on lines. Do your best and have fun! keepdrawing

The first two were actual review and draw, the snail with the longer antennae is from active recall. Rushed the boots, I will likely draw them over again but would appreciate pointers. Need to work on my line control and the C/S/I movements but don't what drills I could use. Going to watch through the playlist to figure it out.

Looking good!

Very hard for a beginner but also very rewarding ! Somehow I was afraid of the pair of shoes but I enjoyed it the most. Even though it's not perfect, I feel proud of my work. Also : accuracy with S curves is a nightmare. C curves I can manage, but S curves really drove me nuts.
Nick Grey
While doing the assignment realized i'm struggling a lot doing skribbly lines instead of fluid ones especially at C and S curves. Aside from that loved the assignment. Laces were a mistake but a fun one xD
Kim Solon
I tried to simplify as much as I could and made a conscious effort not to rely on shading. These are my results. I think one of my mistakes was that I didn’t do the assignments with enough speed. I really love this exercise because it doesn’t allow me to hide my imperfections through shading or extra details. It exposes my weaknesses, especially in drawing clean and confident lines.

I enjoyed drawing it much more that I expected

Here is my submission for level 2, drawn digitally.

I did the boots first and I don’t think I stayed true to the assignment the whole time. It’s too detailed and my line confidence is… nonexistent? So I watched the boots part of the critique video before attempting the snail and I think I did better, though could use some more simplification. Might try a third round with the skull or camel.
Nickdulis
Its hard to draw without underlying sketch to keep proportions. I cheated with the camel and did that but otherwise tried to stay true to the assignment. Haven´t watched the demos yet but here are my observations: I think I struggle with simplifying details while keeping proportions accurate. Boots straps were bloody nightmare. With bones I didn´t even try. Camel, horses and similar animals are and always were very difficult for me. Mainly the legs. They took many redraws.

Took me absolutely forever on the boots, still have trouble making nice strokes. Also, not sure what brush to use in Procreate for these assignments
@bluepanda
Why is everyone in the comments already good at drawing... , Thought this was supposed to be a 'beginner' course
@muddysoul
Not everyone haha. I am a beginner, I wish I had people who were also doing this course together to keep me accountable though. But I don't have anyone like that beyond the comment section with occasional replies.
Nickdulis
Some are filling in the gaps in their fundamentals even though they are more advanced. Don´t get discouraged. As a beginner in this course, you are learning all you´ll need and will not need to come back later to figure out what you are missing in the fundamentals. You have the advantage to learn proper techniques at the starts instead of relearning and getting rid of bad habits. So don´t give up. You are the superman in here, believe it or not. Hope it helps ;)
@mogumogu
My 3-4 1st attempt, critique welcome I think I fumbled the camel drawing a little

I learned that I need to work on having confident lines. I see a lot of line control exercises in my future . You see it more in the boots, I try pretty hard to hide it in a finished drawing. The cat was maybe cheating a bit because the photo is a silhouette but my cat's adorable, and did you notice her really cool polydactyl paws?
Turbo Fish
Just realized it should be longer by the end, but that`s fine. Tried the turtle as well focusing on line quality, turned out ok
@watidude2
Struggled a lot more with this exercise. The boot I couldn't get right to save my life. I do like my skeleton even though it doesn't look like the original at all, feels like i made it my own a bit.
