Level 1 snail. The noticeable flaw that pops out right away is the shell not having depth. How can I improve?

Wanted to share the notes I took as well as the lines I decided to draw and what emotion they convey to me.

My attempt of the exercise. Had some fun but ultimately I need to improve my drawing round circles and ellipses, as well as learning how to adjust my pencil pressure at will. Definitely will add to my daily practice routine.

Here's my pear, done after the demo! I only had an HB pencil on hand, making it a little difficult to lay in lighter values, so I feel like my light halftone looks more messy. Feedback is welcome!
