I got a little too precious with the boots once I tried to simplify the laces.
LESSON NOTES

This exercise will help you avoid chicken scratch. Instead of uncertain pecking at the paper. We're going to draw each line with a focused and intentional path. Remember to draw from your shoulder, elbow and wrist. Avoid the fingers. When I tell you guys to simplify your lines, I'm usually referring to three types of lines, two curves and one straight.

ASSIGNMENTS

Download the photo reference images and try to simplify them using CSI lines. Draw each line with a focused and intentional path.

Your pace should be quick, but not rushed.

For this exercise, we will just consider the individual segments of the contour of a shape.

Same instructions for level one and two. Just a difference in difficulty of reference. The level two photos have more fun little tidbits to tempt you to get into the details, but fight the urge and simplify.

Also, no shading in these please. This is not meant to be a portfolio piece.

Tried to stick to the spirit of the lesson, using the three line types.

Looking good! One thing I notice is that you have some parts with some dark overlapped lines, which can make the result look a bit messy. In the next few lessons, you'll be going over ghosting strokes and using searching lines, which I think will help you in creating a cleaner looking drawing, even just a sketch. Keep up the great work!

I drew the snail twice because the first one didn't convince me, and I'm not entirely happy with this one either... The next day I did the boots and was mentally fried by the time I finished the laces. Finally, I drew the camel in literally five minutes—it probably turned out badly, but I'm really not good at simplifying things and end up spending more time than necessary. If I’d known I could create my own guides, it might have been less chaotic... but I only discovered that when I watched the demo :( On top of that, I’ve always drawn on paper, and now I’m working digitally; that’s frustrating too, because I don't feel comfortable with the canvas and the stylus.

Second Submission for this. Left - First boot drawing, pre-demo Middle - Second boot drawing after demo Right - My one snail drawing I drew the boots first for some reason, then I watched the demo. I realized I needed to simplify a bit more and I did the boots again, followed by the snail. As usual, I could be better at following simple instructions. On both boot drawings the proportions on the laces kept giving me trouble. I need to improve at dialing this in with lighter lines before darkening. Moving on to the camel and skull now...
@floridaestresso
First try before the Demo videos. The Boot was harder than the Skull in my opinion because of all the laces. Wasn't sure how to properly simplify them without reducing them to just lines

First try before watching the demo. Started too high on the paper.

I struggled a lot with this project because I wanted each line I placed down to be perfect. As a result, I would put down a line, not like it, erase it, and repeat the process for almost every line I placed. After I finished the boots pre-demo, I grew very frustrated and burnt out, so I took a break. When I came back, I watched the demos and critiques and tried to apply what I learned to my post-demos. I learned to put down big shapes rather than start drawing with the intention of perfection. This quickened my pace, and drawing started to be fun. Another thing I learned is to welcome my mistakes. I am drawing in my sketchbook, and I am learning. I can't set my expectations too high, but what I can do is draw the best I can, then reflect, as I am now, and apply what I learned to my next drawing. My post-demos suffered from some proportion errors, but I’m okay with that because I am learning. Another thing I need to work on is thinking about the line I want to draw before I place it down by ghosting it. With these lessons learned, I hope the next project won't be as frustrating and will be fun and exciting. I hope what I wrote down helps others, and I wish everybody a good day. The left side is the pre-demo, and the right side is the post-demo.
@ebonyreyes
Right side is before watching the Demo. Left side is after the demo. Snail

Pre-demo version. The laces were difficult, lots of erasing. I drew these in four sessions. I could have done better at honoring the CSI requirement. I definitely caught myself drawing complex lines and shapes continuously. Looking forward to some pointers in the demo video.

This is one of the shoes. When I have more time, I’ll try to draw both. I’m not sure how to approach the shoelaces. I get lost when trying to draw them.
@dungeondadhd
I had fun with this snail. My goal from now on will be to take progress shots so that I can refer to for comparison
@decriojr
Pre demo boots and snail. Those laces were a nightmare.

I struggle to draw with lines! I focus too much on shapes and proportions, so lines become an afterthought.
@ndeboar

im the same, i have to really force my self to let go of proportions when doing this. I get way to fussy

I might do another one and realllyy concentrate on just the CSI lines, i got a bit to into the details.
