Warmup - One-Point Boxes

Course In Progress

Here's a quick warm-up exercise for one-point perspective:

  • Start by copying the page I drew.
  • Set it aside and sketch your own boxes in one-point perspective.
  • Draw these boxes in different directions - up, down, left, right, and into the distance.
  • Vary the box sizes and dimensions.

Remember, warmups are meant to be repeated for 5-10 minutes before drawing sessions. Also, don't forget about the warmups from earlier in the course that help you improve your straight lines (Straight Taper, Trace the Ruler, Connect the Dots)

Procreate dreams just released and I’m really excited to play around with animating stuff! As my first exercise I wanted to draw a box rotating. How hard could it be? ( evidently still quite hard)

Nice work! I'm excited to start working with Dreams too!

That is tough, but great job! Mastering intuitive boxes well enough to do that is one of the best skills to focus on in order to draw from your imagination. Ditto on a tumbling cylinder.

The wide and thin shapes were harder to do than the average size shapes.

Here are some of my warmups. I'm not sure why in some, I lose the shape of the front face as it goes to wards the vanishing point. I start with a rectangle and the front face shape behind appears to look square. All feedback appreciated.

@zionastar
for your last image at least, that you point out specifically it looking square, i believe that's due to the bottom line connecting the two sides being at an incorrect angle. the angle of that line has the left side lower than the right, when it should be the opposite. if you take a straight edge along that line and move it carefully forward to align with the front rectangular box you should see what i mean.

These warm-ups are a welcome distraction (from moving house😅). Turns out it’s very calming. No ruler used. Various pencils.

I decided to vary a bit with the cubes. No ruler used for practicing too on the lines... The exercise reminded me of my experimental math classes 30 years ago for spacial orientation figures. And the overlap. I love the perspective overlap effects.

Current warm up. Got a great recommendation from @Gannon Beck to try using a ruler for now till I really understand the concept of the exercise, then using it as a line quality exercise as well.

Did exercise inspired by Fabian Ayala post here today. Wanted to add some shapeshifting turn to it, Results not very natural when it comes to animation but it was fun, will try better next time :)

Did new exercise trying to rotate the other way around as I just can't wait for upcoming lesson in 2-point perspective 🙈 First i did what i thought that would work, then i corrected it by finding vanishing points... While facing planes were decent, the not-visible ones were just...bad. I noticed that the vanishing points of more facing me planes are always bit more far away than I would think. At the end animation is great way to learn cause while we might not see mistakes on single work, we see something is realllly off while watching it played :P

Nice, glad you had fun doing this exercise. This helps because in animation there is a lot of drawing, so you definitely get some millage out of this exercise.

I feel like I misunderstood the assignment =( In all seriousness, this was my half assed attempt at doing this perspective exercise. I'm quite proud that I managed to get this far as this was one of the first exercises I faced after starting out. I haven't figured it out yet but I've figured quite a bit already and I feel like I'll have it down within the week. I'll post some actual one point perspective tomorrow!

I do not think you misunderstood, but it may make your drawing easier to see if you use a pen for the definite boxes. Maybe not making them all see through...

Forgot to post but hey batter fashionably late right? one of my boxes was being weird anyway.
