Thanks Stan for the excellent course. I am making progress. I appreciate the way this course is laid out and the patience required by teacher and student alike to build up concepts and techniques slowly. You are also a fun instructor. Keep up the good work!

Let’s take a look at your Mannequin Hands! In this critique, I’ll be looking through both level 1 and level 2 submissions and giving feedback on common mistakes.

😭😫 I spent so much time on the 3rd hand and it is still pretty awful (even after watching the demos and critique). I used gestures and rhythms to start. Then I drew the hand using CSI lines because I wanted to make sure my proportions and angles were ok. Then I redid those again bc only the pinky and ring finger looked ok. Tried it a 3rd time. Then I began the boxes. The middle and index finger still look awful. The pic I attached shows what it looked like in pencil, but the ghosted lines were nearly the same value as contours so I went over contours with darker pencil (middle) The middle & ring still looked wonky, so I went over the contours with a black marker then marked it up with some other colors to show the ghosted lines better. Red lines are corrections. I could really do with some feedback to help me improve drawing boxes in perspective. Thank you. (I also included my (pre-demo) attempts of hands 1 and 2 just to increase sample size of work.)

Pretty tough, I couldn’t do the level 2! ‘:D

I wasn’t sure which corner was closest to me, or whether I should be using three-point perspective throughout the whole piece. Often, when I tried to taper lines along one axis, the edges on the other axes would start to look wider in areas where I didn’t want that. So I kept having to constantly adjust almost every edge. After watching the critique, I decided to use Blender to set up some simple box shapes in space and draw them from observation — hoping this would help me understand perspective more clearly and make it feel more intuitive. Progress is still slow, but I’m doing my best to push through and learn. Any feedback is welcome!

Tried to draw this from imagination and the reference one is so much better xd. Moving on to cylinders!!

These look awesome!

first image on the left is level 1 attempt after post demo and critique. The next two images are my attempts on level 2. This was harder than I thought drawing in imagination. Not happy with the result but it’s fine for now… lol

Looking for some advice. And I hope I am explaining this well. I understand the Y trick and having lines converge when going away from the Y. However, when doing exercises such as these hands, I don't always start with the Y when attaching one part of the digit to another. At times I ended up establishing my box and then the Y which required me to erase some lines and converge away from the Y that I established after the fact. Any advice on drawing these converging (or maybe diverging depending on how the box is initially established) when you cannot start with a Y?

Here are my level 2 sketches. My attempts to draw the hand from another angle were a challenge, but I made sure that even if the position wasn't exact, the boxes were still drawn in perspective correctly. I apologize for the crunkled paper on the last sketch; transportation issues.

After doing them I think I got the hang of them. It's a bit easier to do after revewing the criqtue

I really love this lesson , so after the critique i went back and red penciled my mistakes …. There was too many (mistakes) so post critique i did this hand again and was more mindful of my lines and perspective . This will be a warm up that will always be enjoyed . Thanks Stan

Final set of hands after watching the critique video. I've definitely grown more comfortable drawing boxes in 3D, but they're far from perfect. Coming up with the hands from imagination is still really difficult for me. But oh well, on to the next lesson.

Here's another attempt at the level 2 assignment after using some tips from seeing Stan's demo and critique After finishing it I see that I'd made a mistake on the finger proportions segments

I'm coming to drawing very late in life and I had only just learned of Kim Jung Gi before his tragic passing. I learned of him through Sorie Kim's sketching course on Domestica and then through Stan's interviews. I know he's been gone for almost two years now but it's still very sad to talk about him in the past tense. R.I.P Kim Jun Gi.

My second attempt at the project using different references. Started using value to differentiate the planes. Drew additional rhythm lines to help me with the rotation of the fingers. It also helped to find the eye level.

When I spotted a chance for critique, I mistakenly interpreted the assignment, drawing everything in a boxy style, but not literally as single boxes... 😅 However, I like this approach as keeping everything clean is just easier. Did a few more studies in this style (I even matched the next lesson with drawing glasses! ) after the deadline, critique or tips are very welcome :D Can't wait for the lesson about twisting and bending!

After the critique, I tried to redraw some of the fingers while giving more thought on drawing boxes instead of hand. 'treating each finger as a box that has its own seperate vanishing points' is what I took away from the last lesson. how the form rotate and its relation with lines convergence n change to a more confident mindset are what I learnt from this lesson. Thx a lot. Now I am kind of brainwashing myself to stay confident and committed to each line I draw btw I think we should have more lessons similar to the last one, so that we can listen when we draw.

I think i can rest in peace now, i got critiqued by Stan "The Proko" Prokopenko! Thanks, not only for my critique. All of them were very helpful. Gonna redo it.
