ASSIGNMENTS

Drawing boxes can get repetitive, so let's try to make this one engaging and practical. In this project you'll be drawing mannequin hands. Hands are an excellent subject for practicing drawing boxes because fingers can bend in various directions, allowing for up to 16 different boxes in a single drawing.

Level 1

  • Download Photos: Download the 3 photos in the downloads tab.
  • Gesture: Before drawing the boxes, identify the big shapes and the gesture of the hand. Lightly sketch in the simple shapes to ensure the boxes are in the correct location and proportion. Avoid drawing any anatomy, skin details or nails.
  • Construct Boxes: Constructing boxes in three-point perspective to represent the segments of the hand and fingers.

The aim is to practice drawing boxes in perspective using hands as a subject. Don't get distracted by trying to draw a perfect hand with anatomical detail.

Level 2

  • After drawing each hand from the photo, draw the same pose from a different angle. This will require you to imagine the pose and draw from imagination.
  • Don't Strive for Perfection. It's okay if the pose isn't exactly the same from the new angle. The objective is to practice drawing boxes in various configurations.

Extra Credit: Drawing hands from imagination is pretty hard. If you want to do some extra homework, you can review these free hand lessons from my Anatomy course:

WOW that was hard. Here after completing 250 box challenge of Drawabox ( the pink and purple hand were done after I completed the challenge and the other drawings on paper were my first attempts at it before completing it.) I still need to work on my Level 2 (sweating already).

I struggled a lot with level 2. Very hard to turn the boxes in my head.

Here are my level one project. It was a real challange but in the end I was pleased with my effort. I had to use layers of skecthes to figure out the structure, hospedagemI employ the perspective and then clean my final draw.

Level 1 and 2 mannequin hand project. I found it difficult to keep lines clean in this project. Any critiques would be most appreciated, Thank you!

I was really disappointed with my original execution of this assignment. I wanted to try again before continuing on with the course.

This took forever but it sounds like im not the only who feels that way. I tried hand 1 on my own and felt very lost so I followed along with the demo. Now im trying the asl alphabet although there a lot of open hand ones I might skip, ive been trying to do the gesture by memory then I need the picture for the boxes. Level 2 peeps are like gods in this one >_< ..... lol have fun everyone ^_^

I found myself struggling a lot with the foreshortened parts of the fingers. Any help is appreciated

These look great! For the third I think maybe your index finger angle is a little off but you're foreshortening is pretty good. Just remember foreshorten means it's top or bottom can face you a bit more. Most important your collection of boxes look like hands ^_^ Well done.

Looks good. The fingers on the third one are a bit hard to read due to the heavy lines of the hand box. Otherwise it looks good.

First two attempts before watching the demo videos. Got a bit frustrated with myself on this one - I get the concept but struggled hugely for various reasons, including how to overlap for knuckles, dealing with foreshortening and just generally being level 0.5. Going to take the dog out for a walk and come back to this tomorrow.

Hey folks! My level 1 assignment I tried my best to show enough of each side and be accurate with the pose. There are some wonky perspective which I left because it served the purposes and some boxes turned into trapezius. ❓: I am a little bit confused about the hand 1. I took a peak at the demo and have seen other doing something I dont get. The second image is the preview of the demo. While stan only draws the hand I am confused about the lower arm. I don't think its possible that we see the top plane of the underarm, but its in the preview. My wrist is locked and I am not able to push the lower arm in front of my palm or at least not that heavy. Besides that I dont see the arm going in front of the palm would Stan's drawing be antomical possible?
Alexander Bösch
😳 After watching the demo I realized that I was confusing a tension line with a plane. Here is how it worked out after the demo by including gesture to the drawing.

I've drawn many hands (mainly comic) but I found this very difficult. I'm sure I will grasp it more when I watch the demos. Sorry, I only had time to attempt one hand from a different angle.

Deciding how to connect the boxes sometimes threw me off.. It was a fun exercise, but the fact, that I knew, I was drawing a hand sometimes led to difficulties

Well, I look forward to trying these again after I watch the demo video. Hand #2 was the hardest for me to conceptualize for some reason. I ended up grabbing a few Lego bricks, holding them up, and looking at how the shapes stacked up to help.

It was a very challenging homework for me, and it was not easy to look at the round finger in a square, and it was not easy to know where to break it

I like your hand #3; the finger breaks look like they are all in the "correct" places, especially the thumb (I struggled with that one myself).

This was a challenging assignment. I loved to draw hands, something tangible, though getting it right took quite some time (and still isn't always that great). I am still getting my head around drawing 3D instead of following 2D outlines when replicating from a picture. So these excercises are really helping me to learn this. Tips are always welcome!
