LESSON NOTES
What's in Premium?
Master the use of cross contours to bring depth to your drawings. This lesson covers what cross contours are and their importance in creating three-dimensional forms. You'll learn to visualize forms using techniques like imagining ant trails, apply cross contours to simple and complex shapes, and understand how the curvature and spacing of these lines affect the perception of depth. The lesson also teaches how to avoid common mistakes, use center lines effectively, and prepares you for shading with cross contour lines.

If you’ve ever struggled drawing things that feel 3 dimensional, cross contours can be a game changer for you. They're super helpful for constructing forms, shading details, and they help you get better at visualizing your drawings in 3D. In this lesson I'll explain what they are, how to control the spacing and curviness accurately, and common mistakes to avoid.
Cross contour scripts, the front side macaroni aswell as the banana were extremely difficult to draw, way to go!

Nice practice! I think you have a good eye for placing the cross contour lines, though there is a tendency to flatten the lines a bit. Try drawing some cross contour lines all the way around, as if the subject were transparent, to get a feeling for what the full mass would look like, especially in rounded areas like the squirrel's tail or the puppy's legs where an ellipse can really demonstrate the curvature. It's also helpful to keep an eye on the curvature of the cross contour lines by the edges, where the curve would be the steepest but risks being flattened. Hope this helps, keep up the good work!
it took me ages to figure out what a role poly was: an isopod. like a pill bug or sometimes called a potato bug.
It's a great lesson. Alot to think about.
At the end of the video you explain the different shapes still need to look like they are wrapping around the whole arm and it's not flattened out.
So is that achieved by thinking about the ends of the contours ( mentioned earlier in the video) and shading or have I missed something ?
These are fantastic. It looks like you have a great understanding of how form works.
try to do something to apply the newly learned knowledge. the bouncy ball and a 1-arm defender. Not sure if the perspective of the bouncy ball is right or not coz i try to imagine where i am at to view the motion. Cant wait for the upcoming project, yeah
Btw the twist… is something that has given me allot of headache in figure drawing course allreadly. I often get the lines in wrong directions . Or many of the beans is rough for me actually but mostly the twist. Have Made them many times and often Ive iinterpreted it differently than proko. But last time i thought its good enough so i finally could go pass that part in the course. It allmost gave me a burnout
This is a great additional, short, video by Marshall Vandruff on the Proko channel.

This and shading are two topics that I never quite got. Hope this time's the charm.
Can I request some exercises or some videos to study the more advanced aspects of cross contour?
Also Poly says hi.
Thank you Stan for putting so much effort to help us. I have tons of resources but I derive the most value from your way of teaching. I always had so many doubts about this cross-contouring but today I had all my doubts cleared. Your videos seem like an interactive workshop as you assume the doubts and mistakes of a student and clarify them so precisely.
Thanks Proko! I really love these lessons. My drawing has gotten so much better over the past year at an alarming rate based on how I've been the previously before this class.
I had to google what a roly poly is🙃
