Project - Simplify to CSI

Course In Progress

Download the photo reference images and try to simplify them using CSI lines. Draw each line with a focused and intentional path.

Your pace should be quick, but not rushed.

For this exercise, we will just consider the individual segments of the contour of a shape.

Same instructions for level one and two. Just a difference in difficulty of reference. The level two photos have more fun little tidbits to tempt you to get into the details, but fight the urge and simplify.

Also, no shading in these please. This is not meant to be a portfolio piece.

CSI
C = C Curves
S = S Curves
I = Straights

Gave the boots a try before watching the demo. In hindsight, I feel like I could have simplified more; it probably wasn't necessary to have every shoelace. I found it difficult to control line weight without resorting to chicken scratching; I could lay in the initial line well enough, but trying to make it darker later was difficult without resorting to shorter, tentative strokes. Any tips?

Damn, I love these shoes. The picture is super expresive. Man seriously, it's awesome.

The proportions are a bit off but here was my attempt at simplifying the shapes to just three types of lines.

And here is my CSI for the boots. I really tried to not get into the weeds with this one but it was very hard. The laces really threw me for a loop. But I was drawing with my whole arm I noticed so there is a win!

Here is my CSI of the snail. No shading, very plain, but I think I caught the flow and general shape of the snail.

I forgot the requirement for this assignment was to use only C curves, S curves, and straights and just treated this like the first simplify assignment but was allowed to use curves this time. It's really easy to see from the snail. I'll redo these after watching the demo.

Originally only did the snail but after watching the demo and following along I felt like something clicked for me so decided to back and try the rest. Think I did a good enough job with the proportions and line work with skelly man but I spent too much time on it and need to learn to simplify more. It seems like the more detailed the reference is the harder it is for me to break it down to its most simple components.

Used pencil to lay down all the details and then just to practice I ent over it with a brush pen. Did these before watching the video, but I’m not sure I need to do them again after watching. The main difference I feel is that my blocking I did with cylinder shapes rather than outlines. Could use a better lighting picture situatuion, and I think maybe more confidence in my pencil sketch

And here are the drawings from level 2! Knowing what detail to cut or not from the skeleton was a bit tricky. Here the rounder edges especially around the eyes were trickier with the brush pen. Looking forward to seeing the demos and learning from them!

That was a challenging and fun. I added too many cross contour lines on the snail, and my shoelaces are mess. I will give another try after watching the demo. Level 2 i am coming. What do you think guys ? Any tips ?

I think my pre-demo digital drawings are a bit "better", but they also took a lot longer. Didn't really feel like I was moving quick, was far more meticulous and measured. So post demo I decided to do them all with pencil and really try to move a bit faster and focus on longer strokes. Even when trying to focus on confidence, things were definitely messy (especially the laces).

This is my drawing of the boots done before I watched the demo. I think my problem is that I put in too much detail (its a problem I have had for some time) After watching the demo I need to loosen up a lot more so I may try this one again.

The boots were pretty tough. The laces and bends in the boot last made proportions hard to delineate. This took an appreciable amount of time to finish. I’m enjoying this though. Just focusing on the lines is keeping me honest

I enjoyed drawing the boots more than I thought I would. I definitely felt more confident in my line work for the second boot after warming up with the first.

Had a really hard time with this one, couldn't figure out how to warp the shell around the body without overly complicating it. Definitely gonna try it one more time before I watch the demo but critiques are welcome.

My first go at the assignment before watching demo, both model are fun to draw ! Didn't know how much clean we had to do on it so I let it as is. The camel was a little bit more challenging than the skull, but I had fun with it

Oh… I guess I simplified too much this time. I didn’t do any lay-in and went straight in like a gesture drawing exercise. This was first attempt before watching demo.

Had another go after watching demo. The boots are improved as they have more structure. Snail still a bit too sloppy I think. I need to experiment more with the lines as I struggle making them precise.
