A VR girl of my own. I wanted to make her cooler, so I gave her a sword and a shield… and a cape.

ASSIGNMENTS

Use the three reference images of clean line drawings and sketch them using simple loose lines. Don't try to match the cleanliness of these drawings. Instead, sketch them out with energetic, tapered strokes. Don't hesitate. Just practice moving your arm with confidence. If you draw some lines and then you realize that, Oh, shoot, I need to curve that more. Go ahead and just draw the new curve right over it. As you get more confident that you've found the shape, you can darken those lines and the lighter lines start to disappear. Focus on the big idea and the shapes the lines represent, rather than on each individual line.

For you, Level 2 monster trucks, I want you to start with this Level 1 project as a warmup, and then head over to the Learning to Sketch from Imagination project page for your instructions.

If you'd like to have a chance to be included in the upcoming critique videos, you must submit your drawings below by March 9th 2023

Good luck and please have some fun!

Really enjoyed doing this guy. Will definitely circle back and attempt again with learnings. HB to sketch, lined in with 2b. Proportions are still tough! I think I'm mixing my big broad strokes with smaller strokes too early. May try a pass where I mostly limit myself to only broad strokes to start until the whole shape exists, and only then allow wrist based details to creep in. The whole point it seems is the broad phase means I can move or adjust if proportions don't look right (my biggest problem) and here's no point in any smaller details until that point. Still as always struggling with just big sweeping arm/shoulder tapered strokes and resisting the urge to flick small segments. BUT way more conscious and picking myself up when I catch it. Still super pleased. It's not 'correct' Vs the reference but I do love the face/expression. Already fixed the point missed on his beak ha

Went super light this time, think I need better control on pressure

Your pressure looks good! Remember to use your searching lines to find your shapes, and then darken those once you've found it!

Well I can see where I went wrong easily! front leg isn't leaned back enough... And then the rest of the proportion mismatches followed through from it. Oh well, I learned! Definitely feels great to NOT be so obsessed over clean lines which I've found REALLY hard to do to date. Knowing the goal was those midway searching lines, let me relax into it a little. May go try another shortly, it was fun!

And I thought feet were hard… Keep feeling like my proportions are off, and I keep having remind myself to keep the lines confident

Looks good! Hoping I can do as well as this when I give the hand a try!
Nicholas Allott
Good. Stan goes more in depth on proportions in the shapes section. They're more of a secondary concern in this part. The most important thing in this lesson is to get the line quality (ie lightly building up with tapered, searching lines). This become clearer for me from redoing after seeing the demos and critiques.

The feet on this thing hate me. Made 3 attempts before seeing the demo. I think there was improvements each time, but the feet and other smaller details are hard to do from the wrist and I still don’t always feel confident with the lines. Is it cheating to zoom in on Procreate for the small stuff

For me, it's difficult to draw with the whole arm.
@hannahfathi
Hand was challenging!! This was my third attempt 😅

I found this assignment tough mostly because I have a lot of bad drawing habits. I didn't know what line control was before this course and I really struggle with proportions. I also have always avoided drawing what I'm not good at drawing or don't know how to draw. I saw the reference to watch Proko's 5 most common drawing mistakes and I make them all to some extent. Super helpful reference thank you! This is what I ended up with I know I have a lot of work online control ahead of me. If I zone into the drawing drawing, when I become conscious of what I'm doing I'm drawing with my hand not my arm.

The great thing now is you're now building up good drawing habits! Recognizing where you have some weaknesses will help a lot as you practice and grow as an artist. As you continue this course you'll have plenty of opportunities to improve your line control and confidence! Keep up the great work!

Lines in the arm feel more loose and sketchy, but once I got to the details in the hand, lines got worse
Chuck Ludwig Reina
This looks good! It is common to start getting a little tighter when you are working into the details. But be careful! Best to stay with long broad strokes, drawing with your shoulder, for as long as possible before choking up on the pencil and getting into the details.

NO IDEA WHAT THE HELL IM DOING

It's okay, nobody does! haha. These look good. Was there something specific tripping you up?

I suck at proportions but I felt pretty good about this. Gonna have to keep redoing it.

Great work! This looks really clean, nice attention to line quality! Proportions will come with practice, but you're picking up a lot of great visual cues at this stage, you should feel good about this one! I notice there's a continuity break between the shoulder and arm in your character. Start to look for ways you can create the longest lasting line through whatever you're drawing. These connections or "rhythms" help keep things feeling connected. The shoulders can be drawn as one long arc so they feel like they're part of the same torso and function together. Watch Stan sketch the character again in red pencil, and you'll see these long rhythm lines. You did this really well with drawing the headband over the head. It looks like you established where the head was, and then you put the head band over it. Nice! This ensures the head feels like it continues underneath. If you draw through your forms you can build on top of a nicely connected structure making whatever you're drawing feel like one unified form. Take a look a this video, Stan covers "Continuity" and a few other mistakes to look out for! Keep up the good work! https://www.proko.com/lesson/top-5-drawing-mistakes

The robot girl was challenging, but I was able to bring some knowledge from the last two assignments here.
Chuck Ludwig Reina
Nice! That is what it is all about. Layering your skills. They all end up helping, sometimes in unexpected ways!
@muddysoul
The first drawing is my Lay-in for this drawing. I am not sure if I have done this project correctly as it looks more like a drawing than a sketch. Feel free to critique my project if I have done it incorrectly in any way. Looking forward to watching the demo to learn how to sketch things correctly.
