A VR girl of my own. I wanted to make her cooler, so I gave her a sword and a shield… and a cape.

Use the three reference images of clean line drawings and sketch them using simple loose lines. Don't try to match the cleanliness of these drawings. Instead, sketch them out with energetic, tapered strokes. Don't hesitate. Just practice moving your arm with confidence. If you draw some lines and then you realize that, Oh, shoot, I need to curve that more. Go ahead and just draw the new curve right over it. As you get more confident that you've found the shape, you can darken those lines and the lighter lines start to disappear. Focus on the big idea and the shapes the lines represent, rather than on each individual line.

For you, Level 2 monster trucks, I want you to start with this Level 1 project as a warmup, and then head over to the Learning to Sketch from Imagination project page for your instructions.

If you'd like to have a chance to be included in the upcoming critique videos, you must submit your drawings below by March 9th 2023

Good luck and please have some fun!

I couldn't draw it well without checking the proportions, so I made sure to measure them while drawing. The circles on the VR girl are really difficult.
Melanie Scearce
Wow, you did great with the measurements! Super accurate.
@iwanttobegood
I think I did an okay job with the penguin and the girl but the hand was sooo hard to draw. They will definetely be a challange in the anatomy lessons.

I really enjoyed this one. I think the hardest part was holding my inner perfectionist back. Those fingers are definitely not proportional lol.

I’m slowly getting more comfortable with observing shapes and placing cleaner lines. Still a long way to go, but I’m enjoying the process! :)
Melanie Scearce
The embellishments look really cool. Nice work :)
@underthecarpet
For the penguin these were no searching lines but fighting lines for me. Especially, for some reason, I head trouble with the head. Took me a while to place this simple line in a penguiny fashion. The hand was alright, had a bit trouble with proportions. Eventually, I decided to loosen up more with VR Girl and forced myself to work quicker. A bit unfortunate placement on the page. This was harder then expected and definitely a good exercise for me!

This was interesting it took me a while to loosen up and allow myself to sketch rather than copy I think by the VR girl drawing I was able to loosen.
@underthecarpet
Same here. It is hard to loosen up sometimes!
Panga Moise
Drew these 3 exercises within an hour, before watching the demo. still have to improve on the CSI.

I'm impressed with your hand, especially for as quick as you did it! I know we weren't supposed to worry too much about proportions but mine was clearly awkward looking and it drove me a little crazy. I think we struggle with the same thing, making confident lines. I tend to be too sketchy (I've heard the phrase "avoid the furry kitty" aka fuzzy lines), and I see some uncertainty in your lines as well. I think this is something that's just going to take practice but you seem to have a good eye for this!
Patrick Bosworth
Nice work!! The hand came out really well. This is a lot of good work for an hour session! On the next ones, try to focus on your proportions a bit more in the early stages of the drawing. Keep up the good work!

I need to work on proportions and erasing less 🙃
Alex Howe
Felt i did the best on the penguin, fun project to do.

Satisfying....but tricky....very tricky....

The penguin was of course the easiest . I've never been good at using my whole arm to draw, I know it's a bad habit so I've been trying hard to break it and the bigger lines on the penguin made it easier to be loose about it. I caught myself multiple times being too perfectionist on the hand and VR girl. The hand was the absolute hardest and it drives me insane to not think about proportions but I know my lines need serious work so I'm going to be lingering on these exercises I think. I gave up on the circle thing in the VR girl picture, another thing I need to work on😅. Anyone have tips on loosening up and letting go of some OCD tendencies when drawing? It's why I quit drawing years ago and it's a personal struggle of mine and I want to get past it. I get hung up on details too early in the creative process.

Tiffany, these look great! As far as loosening up, here are some tricks I find helped me: - Draw very lightly. This will stop you from tensing up, and ad more of a sketchy quality to your work as you build up to a strong line. And as you mentioned, try to draw with your whole arm. - Draw on cheap paper and don’t be afraid to throw a drawing out afterwards. This is kind of a mental trick. Sometimes we get too precious about our work. This is especially true of our study work. Trust that you’re always going to have a better drawing in you, so don’t be afraid to mess it up. Better to have fun! - Find a drawing practice that lets you do lots of start of drawings and not worry as much about “finishing” drawings. I really like doing figure drawing with a timer for this. This lets me draw 10-20 drawings in 30 minutes, as opposed to one drawing in that time that I take to a finish. This helps me stay loose and get the mileage in. Again, great drawings. Keep it up!

Definitely need to work on my line confidence.

A hand...and a penguin. Order - sort of - emerges from the chaos - is that the intention?
@underthecarpet
I like them! The lines seem a bit short and nervous to me but in my eyes you've captured the essence well!
Keval Patel
That was difficult. The hands themselves just feel like a very strange shape in that style and position. I’m usually not bad at drawing hands but that was rough

My 1st attempt. I spent too much time on the first pic, tried to be perfect. But for the second and third images, I got loose and just tried to make them feel right. Hope to receive feedback from you. Thank you!
@noobartist
I messed up on the first one for sure as I didn't leave enough space for the hanging wheel thing so I drew it closer, but if there's anything else that's noticeable or what I need to work on please share! That goes for all of these. Thank you!
@underthecarpet
I like the line work! But I think you could have taken more care with proportions from the get go. What helps me is trying to find primitive shapes in the reference which proportions I can judge well by eyeballing it. For example a squarish shape for the palm of the hand. Or a big oval for the penguin's body.
Lorena Faria
my attempt on this project, trying hard to be more lose e use more straight lines plz give me feedback on it, tks
@noobartist
These look great! The only thign that stands out to me is the Penguin. The bottom half looks like it's off frm the original but all 3 look good linewise :) sorry I'm pretty new, but I can see the lines were creted with confidence.

Enjoyed the exercise. In a way I am afraid of the end result. but in the end I am always pleased with what I draw and I feel happy while drawing. Look forward to the next ones.
Melanie Scearce
Glad to hear that you enjoyed the process :) Keep up the good work!
