Project - Simplify to CSI

Course In Progress

Download the photo reference images and try to simplify them using CSI lines. Draw each line with a focused and intentional path.

Your pace should be quick, but not rushed.

For this exercise, we will just consider the individual segments of the contour of a shape.

Same instructions for level one and two. Just a difference in difficulty of reference. The level two photos have more fun little tidbits to tempt you to get into the details, but fight the urge and simplify.

Also, no shading in these please. This is not meant to be a portfolio piece.

Here's my assignment, I hope I did a good job. I'm happy with it. I added a little shading here and there, couldn't resist XD

This is my first attempt

I tried to do all of them a couple times and these are "the best". Kinda got lost in the weeds at times with the boots and the camel and started to focus on the proportions.

These are all so well made. You’re going to get a lot out of this course.

I'm still a beginner and this one was tough for me, but a good challenge. I'm working on the boots next

I feel like my proportions are a bit off, but I think I can move forward with these. Correct me if I am missing anything. I feel like I simplified and used CSI.
Melanie Scearce
I agree, these look awesome! Keep up the good work 👍

I'm very far from CSI lines :)))
Melanie Scearce
You have the right idea! It looks like you are making CSI lines by building them up with a lot of little lines. You could work on refining your lines a bit, by either ghosting in the lines before you lay them on the page, or keeping your lines very light as you build up. I like how it looks though, especially the blue snail. The shapes look great!
Matthew Kebby
I feel skull was easier than the camel. But the camel I feel is awful should I just keep practicing these two or can I move on. Does the camel have to look any good.
Matthew Kebby
My third attempt. I’ll be moving on now but I’ll definitely continue practicing these two.

the snail and the shoelaces my brain went Ooowee I struggled with shoelaces the most. I’ll have another attempt at the boots and the snail

My first try with this assignment. I'll be posting follow up attempts after a week and then finally a second set on week two. Still getting used to drawing on a tablet, and it's definitely harder to ghost on a tablet, good news is though I believe I got my pad set up where its comfortable to draw with no death grip on the stylus (my hands don't feel like they are numbing up!) and more ease of flow in the elbow and shoulder. Should I keep my picture zoomed out to encourage use of my elbows and shoulders? Right now my skill is pretty low and I'm hoping for any tips with krita or digital art in general. I hope someone makes a class for Krita or digital in general. The best I could find was a introduction to it, but no serious deep dive like this class.
Melanie Scearce
Yes, I would avoid zooming in too much. You can easily lose sight of the overall proportions and get fixated on small details -- not a good habit to develop. If you haven't looked through the Krita user manual yet, there's a bunch of helpful information and tutorials packed in there with images/gifs: https://docs.krita.org/en/tutorials.html.

These look great. But don't feat the laces! You've got this.

Started with boots and got lost in proportions, simplifications, etc. Will try again tomorrow. Went to draw the snail afterwards and it felt much easier. In-between I rewatched the CSI lesson.
Melanie Scearce
The envelope method might make it a bit easier to sort out the proportions so you can focus on the CSI lines. You are just aiming for the most general size and shape relationship of each boot, and the trick is to keep your lines very light so you can make adjustments as necessary. Working digitally, you can make your envelopes on one layer and decrease the opacity so you can draw on top of them. Simple to complex is the mantra. Hope that helps, good luck with your next attempt!
@kenobiwanobi
Yeah... not too happy with these. But the assignment was to not spend too much time, and the boots took me quite a while. The shoelaces are pretty hard to work with, but I didn't really see a way to simplify them further. I'll give these another shot after watching the demo.
Wieke Pierhagen
Done the assignment, and I found it sometimes pretty hard not to get tangled up into details (the shoelaces really got me there). It feels like a balancing act; not too much detail but not forgetting all the shapes there are. I was not really sure afterwards if I used the CSI lines consciously enough. I found myself sketching and sometimes totally forgetting the CSI assignment! Now unto the demo's! Really curious what I'll be learning there!!
Chad Cooper
Here ya go. The boots were a challenge. I got lost quite a bit. I wonder if I accomplished or even understood the lesson... I suppose well see in the demo section. One of the things I really struggle with is speed. Both of these too about 80 minutes total.

CSI exercise level 1 & 2
@shady_greyhound
Haven't watched the demo yet, but spend 5 days on trying the snail and the boots all by myself. Well, I found the snail quite easy. But in general I really have had difficulties with proportions and angles. I tried to 'measure' as shown in the pear-demo, but still struggled quite a bit with that. I eventually made progress by using a 2H pencil doing rough shapes to get the outline and where I want to put the laces. Image 2 is an example of in-progress work for the second boot. Then followed up by actually putting the drawing in place with an HB pencil. For the final touch on the boots I used a 2B pencil tracing the drawing in the hope that my initial 'sketch' becomes less prominent.
