Thanks for the classmate who uploaded the cat's photo to #14 days challenge#. Sorry I can't remember your name. Your cat photo is so funny, I couldn't help myself drawing a picture for him or her.

ASSIGNMENTS

Pick an animal, a bug, or some kind of creature, and find several reference photos to use as inspiration to sketch a new character.

Don't copy the photos. Feel free to explore with proportions and exaggerate or simplify things to make it your own. Do multiple sketches to experiment and try different ideas.

Once you think you have a clear idea of a character, do one full page sketch. Even in this final sketch, try to use loose, confident lines and focus on the shapes of the character you have in mind. We're trying something new here with this project by starting to develop our ability to draw from imagination. So it might be a bit of a challenge, but don't sweat it.

Let's keep it loose and rough with our sketches and just focus on letting those creative juices flow. Don't focus on the cleanliness of your lines. We're sketching, and when you post your assignments, please include the photos you found and all your experimental sketches.

If you'd like to have a chance to be included in the upcoming critique videos, you must submit your drawings below by March 9th 2023

And don't forget to have fun!

@irenemarceline
Ok so I I started by trying out mice but the fur on the reference photos made it hard to identify edges so I quit and made caterpillars. it shows that I hadn’t warmed up lol Then I continued with lambs. the quality of my drawings fluctuate a lot idk why. By the end, I really enjoyed drawing the two jumping lambs. I did however start copying the images instead of creating my characters because I realized that maybe I’m not ready to play with proportions and features yet and need to work on my fundamentals first. All in all, it was fun and I got more confidence to just jump into it rather than staring at the paper or wasting time to search for the perfect references. Thank you!

Using last bits of energy and finally some cool air to also do this assignment. I feel like I bit a lil too much. antlers in perspective are really hard and I probably should´ve figured out the lizards head in this angle before doing the final. Been winging it a bit but hey, its workable. Things to improve but could also have been worse. What do you think I should try to improve the most? What´s the weakest skill?

Very nice!!! Keep drawing

I'm shy, but this is mine hehe

Super cute!! If you want to keep practicing with this one, try sketching out a couple of the reference photos, using photos from different angles and poses of the armadillos. They definitely have a very round construction, so thinking about a sphere can also help add dimensionality to your sketch. And sketching them from different angles helps gain a better understanding of how the arms/legs would move, so you can position and play around with different poses too :)

This was definitely a challenge! I struggle with the perspective and proportions working from imagination! Three bears were studies and soccer bear was from imagination with inspiration from my son playing soccer! I definitely need more practice with this.
Turbo Fish
I am a level 1 but felt like trying this one. Turned out kind of ok, but I am still much better at drawing from observation
@meneedlearn
I'm definitely mixed on my final result but I guess its ok for now.
Melanie Scearce
This is a very charming sheep! What is it that you are feeling mixed about?

Great shape design! I think studying all the different poses/angles really paid off :)

The animal character design exercise went a little further than just drawing :-D

So cool. Way to go

This is AMAZING!! What a cool way to go about this project! I love the expression! Did you do any sketches to help you bring this little guy to life, or did you go straight to designing shapes with the fabric? Great job!

You made this?! It's incredible. I want one too

Drawing some frogs from reference, then trying to do the same from imagination, capturing what I like about them.

This is my 1st drawing from imagination. i have never drawn a cat so i decided to make something up from my cat’s pictures. By the way, very difficult. I’m really a level 1 but enjoying the challenges of both the level 1 and level 2. I on 22/185 and going to watch the demos and critiques next from the course on drawing from observation and imagination. Keep Drawing everyone
@sketchenstein
In your same shoes, haven't tried yet, but IMO you did great!

Drawing from imagination was painful. I did like 3 tries and just stopped before it got truly ugly LOL

This is my dog Wolfie. I turned him into a cartoon version of himself..

The flow is very cool in your drawings. We can feel the movement and direction of the axolotl.

Thanks Prokopenko, great teacher.

I think I like the last two the most. They are pretty messy though..
Samuel Gariépy
Very cool exploration of shapes. I think that allowing ourselves to be messy and loose makes us less precious about our lines and overall drawings, giving us the right mindset to explore and discover.
