Thanks for the classmate who uploaded the cat's photo to #14 days challenge#. Sorry I can't remember your name. Your cat photo is so funny, I couldn't help myself drawing a picture for him or her.

ASSIGNMENTS

Pick an animal, a bug, or some kind of creature, and find several reference photos to use as inspiration to sketch a new character.

Don't copy the photos. Feel free to explore with proportions and exaggerate or simplify things to make it your own. Do multiple sketches to experiment and try different ideas.

Once you think you have a clear idea of a character, do one full page sketch. Even in this final sketch, try to use loose, confident lines and focus on the shapes of the character you have in mind. We're trying something new here with this project by starting to develop our ability to draw from imagination. So it might be a bit of a challenge, but don't sweat it.

Let's keep it loose and rough with our sketches and just focus on letting those creative juices flow. Don't focus on the cleanliness of your lines. We're sketching, and when you post your assignments, please include the photos you found and all your experimental sketches.

If you'd like to have a chance to be included in the upcoming critique videos, you must submit your drawings below by March 9th 2023

And don't forget to have fun!

Hello this is the work i did for this assignment, at the beginning i was drawing and figuring out how to draw the head right, making this ellipses help me to understand better the shape of the head. Early sketches on paper and move to digital to work the body. To be honest im still having trouble working with csi. feedback welcomed

Drew from reference for the frog on a rock, the rest are from imagination. This one was hard but also pretty fun. Had a really hard time with the feet and hands.
@izzybloop
Drawing from imagination is definitely one of my weak points, this was hard for me. I feel like it ended up looking too close to a couple references I used but I think it's because it was the easiest pose for me to draw in my head haha But I still enjoyed it and I hope I can improve on it better in the future!

Decided to redo the assignment and work purely from imagination without any reference and it helped me loose up a bit. I was thinking to do something with a fish first but then it developed into some kind of seal. Very good exercise and I'll continue

Didn't have to imagine too much when the cat (sister's) tries to get my attention every moment I'm awake. Not shown here is the body framework that was so distorted it looked like a cat head on a bean, which I erased to draw the new one over (after I referenced some rough cat body shapes).

Nice exploration. Your lines are so loose and sketchy and experimental, which is perfect for this project. I like seeing that box on the ground for perspective as well. That's a great idea to help visualize your imagined kitty in space. Keep up the sketching!
Jari Lambrechts
Decided to do an Armadillo because they look kinda cool, but also I liked how anxious they look the moment before they transform into a ball, thats what I went for.

Okay so after the demo I figured I should try to make more of a character instead of just an alligator in a different pose so I came up with a few ideas for toy alligators
François Alligier
The exploration sketchs are soooo messy, still got to work on that but really happy with the final sketch :D

While definitely not perfect, I'm pretty happy to have come up with something relatively cohesive! The first couple of sketches are a mix of reference/imagination and the final image is on the right, any critique is more than welcome

Alligators filled with character!

Feedback welcomed! Working on a project where I'm giving little art to friends specific to my relationship with them. So this was a perfect assignment. Even though new at drawing thought I'd try. First are some of the reference images, then a couple of preliminary sketches, and then the final line drawing (which I will be finishing with colored pencils and pastels:

I chose a river otter as my animal. I've included the references, sketches and final. Any feedback/help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Wonderful animated and sweet image.

Hello, Until now, I have always drawn using references. After doing some research, I realized that if I had pushed myself a bit more and spent more time on it, I could have created something more stylized. In this piece, I tried drawing entirely from imagination for the first time. It was a really enjoyable experience. However, I’ve become so used to working with references that it was quite challenging not to look at them while drawing.

Impressed with how they all distilled into your final character.

I thought of this from the things I have observed in the past days. Proportions are still a challenge for me and especially the lips of the cat/jaguar were a big challenge which I did not pass very well
Christophe Mortier
4 are from reference and the 5th one on bottom right is from imagination after learning how to draw a capybara.
Kevin Gasanli
Here is my second attempt. I tried to do it digitally this time. I tried to be more loose with my strokes, I also tried to make my lines confident. I am kind off dissatisfied by the result. I think it is possibly because the design itself is not great, or perhaps there is a more glaring issue? I might have to come back tomorrow with fresh eyes to see.

Tried a koala, ended up looking more like a Grateful Dead Bear lol
Melanie Scearce
I like it! If you want to make him look more koala-esque, we can look back at the reference images to consider some features that are unique to a koala. Those strange hands for example...they have two thumbs!! That's an interesting idea to play with. Their noses as well are very unique to koalas. Thinking about how to design each individual part, and then the proportional relationships between each part (like the proportion of the ears to the head) can help you get a better likeness. Fun fact: while looking at koala noses I found out that the pigmentation of each koala is unique like the fingerprints on humans.
