Thank you, Stan, it feels so strange to be called advanced when only 2 months ago I was first trying to understand beans and tapered lines and boxes and 3D space. XD I have been practicing and hopefully some of the proportion issues have and will continue to get better. Thank you Steven Wolf as well, you always help us with excellent critiques. 😊

It's time for another critique! I'll be looking through both level 1 & 2. I’ll be looking through your rhythm quick sketches and giving some advice on how you can use rhythms more effectively to get more dynamic drawings.

My sibling showed me a pop singer, and I felt this pose had some nice rhythms I wanted to capture. This drawing is done with minimal accuracy checks, in keeping with the lesson and assignment, and no construction frameworks (I don't know any useful ones anyway). I've learned bits and pieces over many years, but it's in this Basics course that I feel it's coming together, putting down the flow and shapes I can feel with the notations of visual art we learned from Stan. I feel that art is probably amongst one of the more opaque pursuits. It's no less academic and yet taps into a non-linguistic, non-linear kind of intuition that seems to be more logically fuzzy. I have to say, Stan isn't making this easy with hours of demos and critiques to think through, but it certainly is inspiring. I think I've always had some doubts about the obsession we have with making drawings realistic. If we want perfect realism, we can use a camera. Drawings are larger than life, more than just reality. They can be used to show parts of yourself that are hard to put down in words. I feel that the more interesting drawings I do involve a lot of comparisons: relative sizes/lengths to each other, angles of lines of contours/rhythms. It's an abstract feeling of the gestalt that powers art, whether visual or musical or otherwise. I think that the more we do this, the more we understand why certain visuals move us, be it a photo or a drawing or a cinematic angle. All the lines and shapes and edges and values add up to a stimulating experience, and by studying drawing we can start to understand and maybe even capture some of that feeling.

Bonus studies - fencers! I always thought fencers were super dynamic in their poses, especially their rapiers sort of acting as an extension of their arm, creating a large rhythm along with it. It was a lot more difficult to find/invent shapes because the fencers are wearing thick layers of clothes that alter their silhouettes.

After watching the critique, I attempted the other half of the reference photos. This time I gave myself a 7 minute time limit, and focused on ignoring smaller bumps and keeping rhythms to simple CSI.

Keep working on poses. I haven't timed my sketch yet so I'll try out on my next drawing.
@jonliebers
is there somewhere we can find lots of these poses to copy in addition to the 20 or so provided? thx

I still can’t seem to draw these in less than 10 minutes but I’m averaging 15, so that’s progress! I can see how having some mental templates to draw upon would be helpful.

Hey all, it'd be really great to get some feedback on my work. I definitely have a habit of making the poses too big,, so I'm then not able to capture the whole pose on the page.

I have completed about 170 figure drawings in the past 2 weeks to start getting consistent in drawing again. These are some of the latest ones. Even though it was a very painful experience and I am not really satisfied with my drawings, I cannot deny the huge improvements compared to two weeks ago. It also felt kind of meditative and I did have a lot of fun finding the rhythms. Any feedback is much appreciated! :)

Hello again, yet another and this time also the last addition of 6 rhythms. I already started feeling the improvement! especially on one pose I was very happy with (as you can see on the nota haha) for how fast and easily I was able to see the rhythms, and how confident my linework was this time (in all but one) And as always, any kind of critique is very much appreciated! I hope you guys had also as much fun as I did, off I go to the next session!

You keep improving with each drawing. I really love this one. The big sweeping gesture that runs through the knees and the shoulder is great, and all the little rhythms that swirl out from the center give this pose so much movement. Keep it up!
Patrick Alexander Büchi
Last but not least, 6 rhythms after the critiques! I'd say that I lack confidence the most, the messy lines make the drawing seem dirty/chaotic, though in the last two poses I'm quite happy with the result! Any kind of critique is very much welcome, I'd love to know your opinion. :^)

Found a great video on Brent Eviston gesture drawing on proko YouTube channel. I’ve used what I learned doing this practice and from the video and tried it using the reference. here is the link to that video! https://youtu.be/s9TcEZIXSLI?si=RLPLmfH_CENTppc6

Such a great video, thanks for sharing! And great job implementing the principles that he covered.

hello! This project was SO hard for me. I have tried to do this for a while, been not liking the result and everything i drew seemed so wrong to me. i watched critique video, tried again and still all my drawings seemed so stiff? I've been stuck on this project for 2 months now had art block because been not happy with my drawings. I'm so lost but still i really don't want to be stuck on this project for more time then i already had been. I drew this pose just to ask for help. Please guide me i would really like to know what i can work on more, if i'm going in right direction. Will be really thankful for the help!

Honestly, I think it looks quite good! I sense a unique style to it and I feel the gesture flow. What I like to do is if I feel like I’ve been doing the exercise for a while, I’ll move on to the next lesson and come back to gesture maybe days or weeks later. for example, I’m doing gesture right now and I went back to do the “learn how to sketch” video again and I notice my sketching lines doing that exercise improved. I had the post demo attempt a month ago and compared it to now and I saw improvement. I hope that made sense and helped!

More gestures that I did. Did 5 minutes per pose. After doing 50 gestures I’m starting to get a better idea of gestures. I looking forward to perspective next! :)

I really enjoy doing these! Wonder if I add too much detail. I could probably push the poses further and go without pure reference

These are my new attempts after watching the level 1, 2 and critique. I’ve been doing these for a few days now and it’s tough. I’ve noticed when I start this exercise, my first couple of gestures are bad lol. I’m gonna continue doing these. Any feedback is welcome :)
