It’s time for level 2 critiques! Let’s take a look through your “Learning to Sketch from Imagination” projects and talk about some of the common mistakes.

Watching my assigment evolve in every stage - first trying on my own, then looking at the demo, and lastly looking at the critique - really made a difference in my bravery and confidence to abandon real-life accuracy. Just iterating on the same subject and even pose does a huge difference. When staring the assignment, I tried some poses and then pretty much made up my mind immediately as to what pose I wanted to do in the end. I learned the important lesson of continuing and pushing further even though I feel like I'm "done" and can't find a way to exaggerate more.

Practiced some more, focused on simplifying shapes

i decided to re do the exercice after seeing all the amazing sharing from the community (the last two pictures are drawn from imagination, in fact the last 3 but i lost my temper on that one)

After watching the critique, I tried to push my shapes a bit, emphasizing the big neck and chunky body that characterize bears.

Tentative after critique, used my cat photos as reference haha, it was so fun! I used UP character as reference for the pose and clothes.

I’m not a lvl 2 but I wanted to try this assignment XD I used a ferret as reference, then I tried something with similar anatomy but a bit more aggressive.

I tried again, and this time I didn’t copy what I saw, I just used it as inspiration. In the end, I designed a little hedgehog soldier, though without many details.

Think maybe I went a little too simplistic? Not sure. Might try another, do more exploring, and see how it feels.

I felt like there was so much potential in vultures that I havent used, so I did some more studies and a more heavy and weighty bird.

I redid this exercise because I didn't create a character last time. It took me ages to come up with an idea but I finaly did. There's a random elephant and then I was looking at foxes and decided to combine a fox with a cowboy. I should have spent more time exploring different angles and parts of the fox/cowboy and I forgot to sharpen my pencil so the lines got a bit thick at times.
@moon_flower
With drawing from the yak references I think I did a good job with that part, but when it came to my own character I kinda just kept with the first idea that came to my hands. I had some more character ideas whilst doing the studies but I got scared off from experimenting more since I was good with the first thing. Overall should have experimented and played with the shapes/proportions/poses more but I still like the character I created.

After watching the demo and the critique video, I had another go at my shark. Tried to look for bigger shapes and their "attitudes". Kinda ended up with Fin Diesel instead of Scrooge McFin this time X'D (sorry for the bad puns). Great exercise! I'll keep doing these!

This is my third try. I'm starting to have fun, listening to podcast about lynx while drawing it, trying composition and drawing from imagination is now telling a little stories. It probably helped to know that I was drawing for somebody as I asked my girlfriend to choose my next animal ☺️ Could you help me improve the gesture ? Now that I'm taking some distance with it, it fells like the lynx could have been flying much more horizontaly

The green one is my favorite! Lots of personality in these drawings. Heres a gesture example I drew for another student the other day. I think it could apply here too.

hmmm, I should have done better than last time.

The frog with the binoculars is awesome. Great gesture in that one and it has a fun narrative. Keep up the sketching, you're doing great!

Here’s my project. I finished it before watching either this video or the demo, as I wanted to go fresh. It was hard to come up with at first, since I’m more used to drawing humans (and cute girls :) ). I’ve always liked cats, so when the assignment said to create a character based on an animal, I immediately thought of one. Now, the problem was that cats are very popular, so I had to try not to be influenced by other cat designs out there. I tried several images, but what really helped in the end was studying a cat’s skeleton (since I’m learning to draw people, I’m more familiar with using the human skeleton for construction lines). I also wanted it to be a robot, because of a story I’m working on. In the end, I ended up being influenced by my love for anime and video games, and I created a robotic anime-style kitty inspired by Saint Seiya and Mega Man. I think it still needs a loooot of work before I can use her in my story, but it’s a start. I'm sharing both the process I followed before coming with a final product and some of the images I used as reference (most I found them on Pinterest. The skeleton ones are from Google and Wikipedia).

Wow. This looks awesome. You took this assignment to a whole new level. You designed a really cool character. I think your cat character could be brought even further if you wanted to open up the pose. Give them some action.
