Alright guys, now that you’ve had some time to work on your level 1 “Learning to Sketch from observation” project. Ill show you how I would approach the sketches.

Here is my second attempt at the exercise after watching the demo. The first time I was being too hesitant. This time I tried to focus on getting strong lines down and worry less about proportions or clean lines. I think the hand turned out much better. Not so sure about the VR girl.

Here is another attempt at the exercise. I choose these reference images at random after searching for something like "clean line drawing."

You understanding of form is really good. Gg!

Here are my before and after drawings. The hand and the penguin’s body and head shapes were challenging to draw. I would appreciate some feedback.
1, 3, 5 are before.
2, 4, 6 are after.

You did a really good job on the second hand. Much better than your first attempt.

Hi there!
I think that the after drawings show great improvement! Really nice job.
I would suggest you keep practicing with the same amount of focus and commitment. Maybe try out some different references and try to apply what you learned from the demos again. That way you can really work on solidifying the lessons.

I did the hand twice as I messed up the finger proportions quite badly. Not that happy with either of them to be honest! I found the penguin the easiest by far.

The penguin one would've still better if you followed the s-curve rhythm throughout. In its body as well wings and legs. I hope you get me. ❣️🙏

I did all pretty quickly
As I didn’t want to think too much, but turned out decent. The extra detail I added was at the end; I almost wish I hadn’t bc I ended up adding extra lines. This also qualifies for my day 14 of my other challenge.

The penguin was probably the most challenging in terms of making it look correct. The other ones were challenging as well and I think I need to work on the making my drawings fit on the page. i will say the boots for the VR girl are super fun to draw and I'm am satisfied with the fingers for the hands. I will be practicing this exercise more for sure. Any critiques are appreciated :)

Gonna need a boat load more practice. How much construction is too much? I get the impression this is supposed to be done mostly without it but I’m not 100% sure on that. Any pointers?

It's totally fine to have construction! Searching lines, construction, and rhythms are key to the initial lay-in when it comes to observational sketching. You can even think about it as its own stage: starting out with light pressure for the lay-in, and once you're able to find the correct lines, you can go over the sketch with a darker line to make it appear more clean and final.

I couldn't help but lightly "ghost" some underdrawing lines first. They really helped me find a reasonable proportion and feature placement without measuring.

really like the penguin👍

Every time I see Stan drawing, I get fascinated by his zappy quick moves of the hand. This quick move makes pointed lines. When the music is turned on and Stan is quiet, I feel like the video was speed up. These move are really quick and sharp.

I really enjoyed this one. Feedback is appreciated!!

after the demo i wanted to practice some more on different references and pokémon’s have easy shapes so it helped me find the basic forms. except on the view on eevee that one was though haha

nice references and real good execution!

Your Mew is so good! Pokemon are so hard to draw because they have exact proportions.

That was fun. Probably I should work more on precision and spend some more time on these

Did the first two normally, but got a little more comfy with the sketch concept on the third.

Here are my assignment sketches. I did not allow enough space for the hanging thingy in the VR girl sketch

Here’s my second attempts-ish. I was just doodling based on them before turning them into true sketches.

Very cool! As you continue to sketch more complex subjects, it can be helpful to break the reference down into more simple shapes that capture the general idea or act as building blocks for the object. Like in these examples, you could start with just basic squares and triangles for the geometric house design, or ovals and cylinders for the (very cute) fennec fox. This can both make tackling subject matter easier, and also help assess proportions and relationships between different areas of the drawing.
