Its time for critiques again! In this lesson, I’ll look over your sketches from observation and address the common mistakes.
These two critique episodes took a bit longer to edit, so Level 2 critique coming out next week.

Some more practice. Some proportions off, and some stiff lines when I tried to darken up the “right” lines, especially in the hairy parts. But overall, I think I was much looser with these sketches. And they were super fun to do!

More practice. The head proportion is a little off...

I was not able to capture the slightly leaned-back angle of this meerkat. I think it is because I did not do well when drawing the first loose sketch to get a bigger picture like Stan demonstrated in the penguin example.

I think I am making some improvement in line quality, but it was difficult for me to capture the feeling of the cat's dynamic movement.

I would like to become able to draw animals and plants, so doing some extra practice on drawing these subjects.

Kept going with the drawing from observation assignment. I really enjoy sketching animals, as I find it more diverse than inanimate objects and it also feels like it's the next step in developing the skills to draw people. I tried to stay loose with my searching lines yet accurate at the same time. Can I just say that I really like throwing on an old movie and just sketching. It's just my style I think, as I find it immensely relaxing and I can pause my sketch and zone into a scene that's in the film. I sketched these animals while watching Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom as well as the Last crusade (my personal favourite).

It is good that you keep practicing sketches. Try to add more helping guidelines or flow lines to understand forms better. I guess gesture drawing is not something we learned in this class, but I often use helping lines to align legs. This means drawing the stuff that is hidden from us.
Trying to imagine how that cow's leg behind is placed. Where is the spine of the cow that is hidden behind the head. If you try to outlines those you will quickly see the mistakes on the drawings.
For example, the tail of the rat on your drawing is "attached" to the belly because you did not try to drew where it begins. :-)
I am telling you this because I make this mistake over and over again. So it's more like a critique of my own problems using your drawings, hehe.

Second attempt of the VR girl and penguin, trying to see the bigger picture and sketch out the big shapes.. lines are a bit messy but I think it's going the right direction

Lost the original reference I had for the rhino, but tried to do this again, this time with the knowledge learnt from the critique. Worried less about proportions, and tried to be more loose and confident with the lines, I quite liked the result!

Hi community! After watching Stan's demo and critique I wanted to try sketching again to try to put into practice what he mentions in the videos, especially the thinking of forms instead of contours and trying to find some rhythm and flow which I struggled a bit during the project. Any advice or feedback is very much appreciated. Thanks!

Interesting change between sharp and curved lines!

i had a hard time doing the level 1 assignments compared to the level two assignments for some reason. i think i was too caught up in trying to make it look decent that i forgot to stay loose and confident. i’ll definitely try these assignments again some time to see if i can practice this skill :)

I hear you! Sketching from imagination is not so much of a problem for me, because my mind doesn’t worry too much about proportions, it goes into doodle mode.

I just realised I failed completely at this exercise hahaha. Went way too perfect with mine. I kept erasing my sketching lines because I wanted it to be perfect.. I guess I need to learn from everyone else that it's ok to just be searching for the right line sometimes.

Simplifying into planes and shade using only five tone values.

Tried drawing them from memory this time. I think these turned out the best, especially the hand.

I drew two of the projects digitally and kept the penguin drawn traditionally to train my line quality on the paper. I am happy with the penguin the most, it was fun creating the large strokes making up the body. Watching the critique i realized the importance of the assignment was to sketch with energy, do you think one or all of my projects convey energy well enough? Which one should I address? Thanks!
