What's in Premium?

In this lesson, I show you how to take control of two-point perspective. We move past the flat look of one-point perspective so you can start drawing corners and real depth. I explain exactly how the distance between your vanishing points changes the look of your shapes. You will learn how moving your points closer together creates forced distortion, similar to a wide camera lens. Then, we look at how pulling those points further apart flattens the angles for a more natural look. I also give you a specific assignment to practice moving these points around. This exercise helps you understand how to control distortion and camera lenses in your own drawings.

ASSIGNMENTS

Practice drawing in two-point perspective and play with how far apart you place the two vanishing points. Pull them in close to get forced, dramatic angles, then push them far apart to flatten things out. Think of it like camera lenses, close points are a wide 30mm, far points are more like a 100mm.

Draw grids and simple cubes from observation or imagination, then redraw them with the points moved around to see how the angles shift. This same trick works for three and four-point perspective too. Post your sketches below, see you at the next one!

Playing around with vanishing points on small thumbnails. Pen for scale. The smaller sketches are experiments with a wide distance versus a short-distance vanishing point placement.

Hey, these are nice! Your perspective lines up pretty well with the grids you laid out. I'd say in the future, work on being more intentional and take your time while you shading during the rendering stage.

for my assignment I used some reference of motorcycles, then I done a chessboard from life with a closer lens and lastly I done a scene from my imagination imagination is definitely my weakness and I find it challenging any tips would be appreciated

Hey ! You did a good job, I like your motorcycles :) Your illustration from imagination has a nice flow. What I could suggest maybe is to stick more to the perspective grid you placed, I see that some of the angles don't match. You could place first big boxes for your building and then refine them, adding details on top. And also we see here the limitation of the two-point perspective. Because you are looking up at these big SF buildings we would probably see the effect of the third VP up above, some of the lines of the side of your buildings appear to diverge (my third VP is too close though, just an example). Hope it can be helpful ! But nice work !

Here is my submission. I tried to imagine how things would look through a camera and included my estimation for the camera lense in mm. Feedback would be very welcome. Thank you 😊

Hey there! Nice job with the grids, but I'm noticing a couple things that could use some improvement. One, again the grids are great but your forms don't always align with said grids. After you lay down your initial grids, I advise you to sketch your forms in very lightly in the beginning so it will be easier for you to conceal any mistakes you may make. Two, some of your forms are leading to the wrong vanishing point and thus look out of place. For instance, the bookshelf on the right appears to be broken at the top as it leans to the left while the bottom of the form leads to the right vanishing point. I've included a draw-over so you can see where your forms land in comparison to the perspective grid.

I used these two references and merged them into a sketch. The likeness is meh but had fun working it out.

So I used deconstruction to understand each part of the rifle. I then put the pieces back together in a medium/long lens. I eventually tried a wide angle but I'm not sure I pushed it far enough.

Second assignment! I went with digital for the first image so that I could try out a lot of different setups quickly and keep things clear. Then I went back to traditional and tried drawing different cube setups from imagination and a few from life, but I really struggled with it. I draw from observation a lot, and I draw from imagination with vanishing points a lot, but when I try to add vanishing points to things I'm observing it feels like I have to turn off the "observation" part of my brain and everything gets straight and rigid. I'm going to try and get outside and sketch with vanishing points more often! In one of the Proko streams back when the first course launched, someone asked Rembert about "the best way to learn the figure" and he said animating it, so I tried to animate the vanishing points moving too. It was very hard and I don't think it's 100% accurate but I learned a LOT doing it. :)

When placing vanishing points, do they always have to be equal distance from the center of the composition? Can one be very far off the page and one on the page?

Hi! Vanishing points can land anywhere on the horizon line, and very often both vanishing points end up far off the page, especially for less distorted perspectives like 1- and 2-point. It depends on where you are in relation to the forms you are trying to draw.

Second assignment done... I have a doubt, when we talk about lenses the small the number in millimetres is, the more the image is distorted, right? So if I have a lense >100mm I basically have a flat plane where every line is parallel to the horizon one and viceversa of i have a really small one I have a fish eye?

Yes, that's true. I cannot remember the exact numbers, but I think, the standard wide-angle lense would be about 18-22mm. Everything below 18mm is considered to be fish eye.
