LESSON NOTES

As artists, line quality plays a crucial role in our drawings. Developing good habits early on ensures that our artwork leaves a strong impression. In this lesson, we discuss 6 habits to help you achieve good line quality. You’ll learn how to avoid the common mistakes, find a comfortable speed, follow-through, ghost in your lines, rotate the paper, and use simple strokes. Remember to practice these habits while sketching, and check out the full Drawing Basics course for more in-depth lessons, projects, and demonstrations.

Line quality plays a crucial role in our drawings. And if you keep practicing those bad habits, they're gonna get even stronger and harder to shake. But don't worry, in this lesson, I'll show you 6 habits to get you on the path to good line quality.
@kevinrussellca
One psychological trick I've found that helps me with confidence, and even straightness and accuracy: When you're in the middle of drawing a line, focus more on the end-point of the line and not on where the pencil is right now or the part of the line that's already made. Like the advice when you're learning to ride a bike: "Watch where you're going, not where you are." (And definitely not where you've just been.)

Some sketches trying to apply CSI lines, good habits tips with searching lines. Not sure if I'm doing things right but I'm doing my best.

I’ve been away for a long time, but i’m back, this time with intention to create great clay pieces and thus starting from basics. I actually was inspired by Yevhen Sirchin here, by their line quality, i took their reference to draw it myself without thinking too much, need critiques.
@tomfoolery_py
I don't know why but rotating the shoulders for the awkward lines was so obvious but I didn't even think of it until it was mentioned here lmao

Day 3 .So from what I learned ..I use confident lines and tried using long stokes rather than small sketchy ones and also did some ghosting ..So here I am

Don’t know if this count but I am coming back here with better and different art pieces try out, also forgot to draw the characters with I line instead of C.S.

Does anyone know if the ghosting method will help with drawing egg shapes
Martha Muniz
Yes, ghosting helps with any sort of line you want to put down, and ellipses/egg shapes can be particularly tricky so ghosting can be a useful tool to implement. But also try out one of the first warm-ups from this course Warmup - Mushrooms as that is also beneficial for ellipses :)

I'm sure it's possible with enough practice of redoing the egg shape over and over again everyday, but I think it's best to stick with the methods and shapes that we're being instructed to do in this lesson. I'm sure that we'll go over more organic shapes and methods later on in this course.

Break the form into 2 strokes: a larger, circular C curve for the large bottom of the egg shape, and a slightly tapered / sharp C curve for the more narrow top portion of the shape.
@drodriguezamador8
Can someone teach me how to draw stuff like this
Jacob Granillo
You learn to draw people and faces or anything you want by starting the basics of drawing or fundamentals. It takes time, there isn't a fast way to learn to draw

Get your sketchbook and start practicing basic shapes! Get egg reference and draw what you see! To me, it's kind of like drawing a circle, but then suddenly my pencil makes one elongated curved line. bam! Egg. Keep practicing!
Felipe Godoy
"Don't move your hand faster than your brain can think." Jim Lee thinks fast as f... Jokes apart, this a very good piece of advice and helps me a lot, often I notice that my line quality is bad, or my precision is off because I am anxious, and going too fast without looking where I'm going.
@elenakatheryn
If you are trying to draw a C curve, do you ghost a full circle? I’m trying to keep my arm moving but I’m not sure how to go from the end of the line back to the beginning.
Rémy Bernard
I guess most of the time, that would be an ellipse more than a circle. But at some point, the theory become a bit useless, you've got to try and solve it for yourself ;)

i really like the Orc (or troll ?) showed during the video so aside the lines exercises i'm doing i also practice lines on this character. i'm using the 6b brush on procreate, maybe a bit too strong for these exercices ? it is hard to get soft lines with it.

I saw this video on YouTube long ago and I thought: oh that's a lot of useful tips. But watching it in order as part of the package makes a huge difference!

I love the line quality!

I have been away for a month and feel slightly behind in my drawing skills. Thank you Proko, for having this community, which has been helpful in getting me back on track. Time to get my line quality solid again ! :D

Glad you're back at it! Looking forward to seeing your work!

I was struggling to understand the point of tapering, but this video helps a lot. Ghosting aids the start of a taper and Follow-Through aids the end of a taper. So it's like I'm drawing part of an unseen line that starts before my line and ends after my line. My line appears when the ghost meets the page and it disappears before it ends.
