I think I'm gonna try this one again.. more simple.. I also got distracted because the snail reminded me of Marcel
Okay, with this project, I found it quite difficult the first time attempting it, especially the boots. My first attempt was with the snail. After watching the demo and realising my mistakes, I did my take two, focusing mainly on simplifying the shell. But the boots, now that was something. The attempt was going well, blocking out the forms before getting focused on the smaller shapes, until the laces were tackled, and it was a mess on the left side, being messy, and the size of each line was completely different. The right side was a better execution, but after I watched the demo and Stan recommended erasing it and redoing it, I went back and fixed both the laces.
Before demo, after demo. The laces still utterly destroyed me but the envelope method really helped with making me happier with my shapes and proportions.
I am overall happy with both of my attempts here. Felt good about my translation of major contours on both of the references, and feel like I effectively communicated the subjects overall. While doing this assignment, I could feel myself sometimes falling into doing some chicken scratch. I find it interesting that in a way, that's my brains default way to approach drawing if I'm not paying enough attention.
After watching the demo, I now realize I was certainly being a bit too careful, and not allowing my brain to fluidly block out some of this. The concept of a "lay in" was new to me in the demo, and I immediately recognized its value to overcome exactly the problem of being too careful. I also felt a little lost when it came to the laces. My attempt was in the proper spirit, while lacking in execution a bit. Next time I will be more mindful of keeping the area under a high detail section like the laces a bit lighter, and also not be afraid to both break up the lace shapes or simplify them as needed to better communicate my reference.
Before the demo. I think I'm redrawing it so much, and it takes so long for the laces, so I think next time I will be more experimental.
I think I may have added too much to the snail, but I would still like feedback before my second attempt.
Before blind photo first, second photo after demo of boots. I tried to do my first snail attempt while on a family road trip while in the car. Needless to say it didn’t work out very well. So here’s the 2nd attempt photo
Before and after the demo. Stopped the first try of the snail because my brain broke. Laces were just anarchy. Retraced the second try of the boots. Did not retrace the laces because life is too short.
Did first pair blind without looking at demo. Did second pair after looking at demo. Felt buoyed that Stan also did not appear to enjoy the laces.
I hate art less now.
1st attempt on the left, 2nd attempt on the right. Felt like a huge jump in progress between these two attempts! Biggest things for me was using construction lines and simplifying more than I thought it would, focusing on drawing the heart of the image over exactness, and being mindful not to draw the details bigger. Thanks Stan!
Having the teacher drawings to help with reference sure was useful. The boots even look 3D now when compared to my 1st try; tho the snail didn't change much for the 2nd attempt
2nd attempt on the left, 1st attempt on the right. Felt like the proportions were better, and I focused more on construction and faster, confident lines over trying to be slower and more accurate
Second attempt at the snail after watching the demo video. I tried to let go of my anxiety and try to draw lines more confidently and faster without paying too much attention to proportion. This one was done in about 10 minutes.
My first attempt before watching the demonstration for the boots. I think I couldn't make up my mind very well on which detail I should leave out.
I think my lines are still shaky, and the shape might have been more complicated than CSI. I wasn't sure if I applied the CSI concept correctly, lol. Critiques are welcome. I'm going to watch the demonstration and will try drawing it again.
Tried to use active recall on the left one, the other one was through examination. Seems like ghosting the line for me for longer lines works 50/50 for me. I think it's because I am not actively thinking about the lines as I give them form at times. Kinda curious if anyone else has had a similar problem in the past.

It can be an adjustment to start actively thinking and being purposeful when laying down strokes, but it will get easier as you do it more. Remember to be intentional and draw what you're seeing, not what you think you see :) Nice observations of your process and what might/might not work for you. Keep it up!
