shoes 1 and 2 before watching video. I was afraid I didn't simplify the forms enough.

It’s time to simplify those snails and boots! I show you how I would do it in these step-by-step demos for the level 1 CSI project. Make sure to check back tomorrow for my level 2 demonstrations!
Jason Wall
Heres my snail attempt after watching the demo. I wanna try again soon and then the boots too.

Alright gave the snail another go after the demo. Definitely came easier this time. Tried to focus more on simplification, and cleaner, more confident lines.
Brandon Andrews
My first level 2 exercise before watching the demo. Once again, my initial lay out proportions are off. So, it affects everything. I found this easier than the level 1 boots, though!

this is my second time with both the pictures without seeing the guidance. This time i am more confident in mapping all the lines. Can anyone give me a comment how to make them better

Am I crazy? It seems like almost all of the teaching happens in the demo, but I'm discouraged from viewing it until after the assignment. I feel like I would be better off watching the demo first and then finding a separate reference for the assignment. That way I would get instruction first but still work to find my independent solution. Please, someone let me know if I have the wrong understanding. It would help me to know.

You are not crazy. That's how it is set up! I believe it's encouraged to struggle with the assignment first because otherwise you would not know what part of the process you struggle with and what you are not thinking about. This is very much part of the artistic process and it's a great learning opportunity.

Alright, so I drew everything twice again. Once before the demo and once after the demo. The boots KILLED me. Anyways, I think I started to get a hang of the exercise better in part two. I feel like my lines here are really stiff, but hey that's what practice is for :P

heres my snail! (edited in cam app to see the lines easier) - i didnt use base lines or the boxes to frame out where to put the shell etc. i was rlly tryna stay simple w it. focusing on confident lines mostly tho. will totes use my base lines next time

For this S-curve, is it bad practice to rest my palm when doing it?
@jackattack
These are mine I say the bear could be bigger

I tried to show it coming towards us in the lines with thickness, in hindsight I could've played up the stretching a little bit more, and made the rest of the body a bit smaller. Any critique welcome :)

It is definitely simplified which was the assignment. As a comment I can add that the proportions are not always right (but who cares in this state of the course).

A few months since I've been drawing so was feeling extra cautious and rusty. I first tried doing it myself and then followed the tutorials. Notes on first time. Not trusting myself putting down the simple shapes and purportions first. Basically trying to follow the organic line of the shape rather than cut through and refine later. Also thought it was a cross-contour challenge so went way OTT with the cross contours as I was trying to understand the mass of the shape. I definitely got hung up on the shapes and trying to show plan changes and 3 dimensional edges rather than the overall shape, and just getting way too overwhelmed by the complexity of the boot. Following along from the tutorial. Mapped out easy to process shapes, than refining details later. No cross contours, trying to be more gestural with my CSI and then refining slightly. Loved blocking out the whole shape of both boots before separating them later. Felt easier to get them in relation to each other, and more straightforward showing the perspective. Focusing on the shoestrings, I thought about how they twist, but also tried to follow the twisted lines through so they were connected. Going to try and do some twisting ribbons in perspective warm-ups before every session, so I'm more confident in doing thin-edged objects in perspective. Definitely a hard session, but I learned a lot!

Love the red sketching of the boots! I'm very new to sketching/drawing but I think my biggest mistake here was trying to capture every single line. What really threw me off were the laces. I got so caught up in them that I lost the overall structure of the boot. Still learning but any tips?
