This is an attempt to observe proportions only using my eyes (which is how I get used to do). I find I tend to draw things wider when eyeballing. It's good to do this practice after last assignment. I feel I can get a more efficient and accurate proportion measurement by adjusting the ratio using both methods. Thank you Stan!

As you develop your eyes to judge proportions, you won't need to measure as much. In this bonus measuring demo, I’m going to rely a little less on the measuring and more on just trusting my eyeballs.

had lots of fun, found measuring with a common unit to be very powerful tool added to my arsenal

Just tryed cus Cillian is the best the mouth was a nightmare

Looks good!

I took a screenshot of Cillian Murphy from the training video and tried to do eyeball exercise. This is what came out of....I need to learn how to do the self feedback. I don't have photoshop but I have a similar tool (affinity).

I haven't gotten all the measurements right yet, but some were pretty close. I've been practicing this lesson for a while now; I need to improve my measuring accuracy.

Here's my assignment. I just used some plumb lines for rough measurement.

Here's another one with the Cillian Murphy reference from the demo.

Wow, this was much more enjoyable than the previous exercise! Demos are so helpful ! I need to learn how to do the self critique steps on procreate. I will rewatch the video.

This was tough. I sort of feel like I eyeballed the proportions correctly, but my values are awful lol I’m hoping the later sections will help with that! Either way, I’m enjoying learning :)

I think I might need some help with this one. On my first try, I printed the photo smaller than I wanted to draw it, and let’s just say it didn’t turn out Cillian Murphy 😅 Then I printed the picture bigger and drew from that, and it looked way better. But I guess we can’t always have our subjects at the exact size we want to draw them. What can I do to train my eye to transfer measurements, whether smaller or bigger, onto the paper while keeping the proportions accurate?
Patrick Bosworth
Great lay-in! You really captured his likeness, and kept this simplified! The only way to train your eye is to keep doing these kinds of exercises, and your eye will follow. Now that you have a handle on these shapes from the larger photo you could go back and try this one again using the smaller photo and remeasure the areas that you struggled with on the first try. Target train the areas you struggle with and you'll start to piece together your method for how to approach a difficult lay in. Keep up the good work!

Several portrait proportion studies done mostly by eye, with minimal measuring — three portraits of my friends and two attempts at Cillian, all with overlays.

Very nice !

These practice pieces are digital paintings — I hardly used any pencil measurements and mostly trusted my eyes. I added some tilted portraits and small thumbnail portraits to train my eyeballing.

I made an attempt at spiderman here. 😅 After I drew him I decided to graphite the background and erase out the clouds. So spiderman is white, I'm trying to bring him out, I know I need more value but I'm jus making it worse so 🤣 I'm calling it. I got lost on what to do with his body because every time I attempt any details it messes everything up. I think if I was gonna keep going I'd add charcoal or maybe even switch to some multi media and get some ink going 🤷

i think i am starting to get how to use line weight .. kinda 😂

You definitely have most of your proportions down! I would say some of the shading lines and outlines need to be lighter where the edges blur more in your reference photos. For example, in your first drawing on the left the shadows on the left side of the face are much more blurred in the reference, whereas you have crisper lines to define them. Otherwise, you've very accurately placed your shadows and used the right proportions.
