My day 1 sketch :) I drew a sculpt from my friend @Alec Brubaker
LESSON NOTES
Establish a Daily Drawing Routine
Challenge yourself to draw every day. Try to get into the routine of drawing daily. Set aside a specific time, and put it in your calendar. If you're already drawing every day, push yourself a bit further. Draw a bit longer or try something new. However, don't go overboard. Set a manageable goal, especially since we'll have another project coming up later.
Daily Drawing Exercise
Each day, fill up one page with linear drawings from life. You can go outside and draw when inspiration hits, or find something at home to draw. Take a photo of your object if you like.
Steps for Your Drawing
- Observe your subject for one minute without drawing. Imagine it as a drawing.
- Begin drawing by sketching a few lines.
- Look, think, and execute. Repeat this process until you're done.
Each drawing can take 5 to 30 minutes, but don't worry about timing them.

Posting Days 13 and 14 together, killing two birds with the one stone. Firstly, I discovered I had just two blank pages left in a wee sketchbook I kept for (my rather amateurish) copies of works by artists I admire. Secondly, I needed two more drawings for my 14 day challenge. Tbh, under normal circumstances I draw every day, time permitting. However, the minute I embark on one of those "challenges" I'm afraid I seize up. Anyway, it's over. The sketches are based on van Gogh's work.
Day 12 of 14. I photographed this little owl at a zoo members' evening. Tbh when I started I was going to replace the gloved hand with a branch. However, I thought the seams on the gloves were interesting to attempt. Obviously I have no idea how to really represent fluffy feathers in the ears.
Day 2! I felt like trying a drawing that someone already did because I liked the pose. I treated this as a simplification exercise.
Omg that looks so cool! Just came back to proko after a pretty long brake of it and drawing in general (no excuses, just easily distracted and unmotivated), please hold me accountable lol
Day 11 of 14 Trying to create better lines. Will be glad when I reach day 14. A lynx from the wildlife park.
In the meantime, I joined a local academic portrait drawing course in December to finally close a loop and confront both my fears and impostor syndrome, especially since I’d never taken a proper shading or volumes course and felt I had gaps in my fundamentals.
It turned out to be far less scary than I imagined: just 24 hours of drawing in good company, with a great and encouraging instructor who helped a lot by simply correcting a few of my lines.
Now I’m planning to join some sketching sessions at the same school. It feels like a really nice add-on to the Proko course—offline and online learning actually work great together.
Some drawings from imagination that just escaped my pencil while working through the Gesture section exercises.
I always did drawings using the grid method to copy pictures. So this has been a fun challenge to observe and simplify and make the most of my lunch break!
Day 10 of 14. A statue called the Elf in Glasgow botanic gardens. Sketched lightly using HB then darker lines drawn using 6B.
Wet dog Day 9 of 14. After a total block caused by trying to draw from the imagination (further on in course) I'm now trying to catch up with the 14 day challenge. I decided I would try a looser style and also ban the use of an eraser. Tbh I wasn't sure what I was trying to achieve in the end. I was trying to stick to outlines but I wanted to indicate the black areas. The foreshortening was tricky.
