Happy New Year Everybody!
I found this whole rendering process super fun to sink my teeth into, and seeing Dave work through the entire character was super helpful! This is my final render for the more brusque Inkpot Sam I hope you all like it and I can't wait to see other people's work!

ASSIGNMENTS
From Sketch to Polish
Select one of your designs from the previous three options. Taking a rough concept to a presentable state is a long and arduous process, but it is the essential next step. We are going to refine that chosen design to make it professional and presentable.
Color and Functionality
Dive into color and rendering. As you paint, focus on how the specific components work on the character. You must understand the mechanics and logic of the design.
Ask yourself these questions while rendering:
- How is this piece connected?
- Does this element wrap around the form?
- How is that going to work mechanically?
Get painting and have fun with the process.
You have until 01/24/26 to submit your art for possible inclusion in the critique video!
I'm waaay late on this. Just came back noodeling with stuff a lot. Like Dave said, it was worth it to improve though. So happy with the progress. I'll try to get the next one in on time!

Hey all! So Dave has recorded the critique for this assignment and my goal is to finish the edit sometime between Fri-Mon! There were so many good submissions in this assignment and I think this critique will have some valuable insights!
Hey everyone! I started this course a few days ago and didn't think I'd make it in time to submit a final render. I should've picked one of the given options... but for whatever reason I went with doing a blanket merchant :S my bad. Enjoy my pelican who puts items in his beak!
hi all! attached below is my interpretation of maren asando. i leaned more into the archaeology aspect of her character, but made sure to include some literary motifs. i think i'll benefit from keeping the bullet points from the brief around at all stages of the design alongside the required references.
had a lot of fun with this assignment; happy enough with my work, but can't help feeling like i'm hitting a ceiling of some kind. hope i didn't miss the cutoff for the feedback by too much
Here is my submission for The Entity. This changed a lot from the thumbnail and I feel I kind got carried away with stuff that moved it away from the original character brief. I was thinking of biblically accurate angels that are actually more terrifying looking, along with the armored archangel image as well.
I really lost steam when the rendering started. It felt like going from 0 to 10 and I became rapidly overwhelmed, both by my expectations and by the complexity of materials, skin, wings, etc. to try and get right. I want to keep working on this, but I would greatly appreciate any and all feedback you have for me, Dave and fellow classmates.
The stuff posted here has been amazing! You all rock!
Hi, I came back to this assignment after a month, so I changed the character a bit from the thumbnail versions (she has a lot of belts now). I have never rendered this much, and I can feel my limits, so back to studying, I guess.
Here is my submission for this assignment of Maren Asando! I didn't have enough time to render it properly, but I ran out of time! Thank you Dave so much for the lessons; I'm learning a lot and improving so quickly <3
My submission. Was not sure how much time was left so didn't fully render it as much as i would have liked to. But am happy overall
Here we go! My submission for Maren Asando.
At the beginning I felt like I choose the wrong thumbnail, but day after day I got attached!
Hope someone like her as I do now!
My submission on Entity!
I am facing some difficulty when I reach the detailed rendering stage. I tend to feel mentally exhausted and lose energy during rendering, and I am not sure whether this come from issues in my rendering workflow or from gaps in my painting skills. Rendering feels very time consuming and I notice my motivation drops at the stage. I'd really appreciate your guidance on how I can improve this, and I am genuinely looking forward to the critique.
Thank you Dave!
love the vibes and the story telling. i think the way you handled the bones in the foreground came out very well! same with the anchors!
My render with a bit of progress since i have been catching up to the course this past week.
I would have liked to take the render a bit further but was scared to miss the deadline. I decided to rather get a feedback and work on it some more afterwards.
Thank you btw for this amazing course!! I have learned a lot already and cant wait to takle one of the other character assignments just for fun.
My render for Inkpot Sam. Lot's of revisions and redrawing. Had fun with the entire process. I look forward to doing more of these.
Like the detail and expression on the face. The chest scroll holder is a cool idea and I like how the colors pop.
Here’s my final for the Entity! In some free time I also decided to do a quick ideation of what the Entity would look like without his armor as well as design the Broken Sword that frees him from his restraints! Unfortunately ran out of time to finish rendering the weapon but hopefully it’s not too noticeable.
It was such a journy to create this character, I went through a lot of ups and downs and big changes becouse i had the feeling i just couldnt get any step forward. but it was all worth it and made a lot of fun.
This looks fantastic. Especially a big fan of the shovel design. It looks like some ancient sword that she broke in half to use as a shovel and I think that makes for a really good story piece!
Excellent work. I agree that the mud was a great idea and done well. Good color choices overall and I think you did a good job rendering the clothing.
~Hey all! Some great pieces by you all! Here’s my Inkpot Sam. I did a more comic coloring approach as that’s my background etc.
~I was thinking of him being covered in ink, having an array of keys for various tomes, paper-ish garb and even his hair is rolled up like scrolls. I wish I was a tad looser like my personal art I make. Maybe next time. All made in Clip Studio on an iPad.
~I included the process and line arts, value check, and flats. Honestly I prefer my flats with no rendering haha. Just means I have to get better at rendering and loosen up.
~The one character with the giant pen-staff was gonna be able to put the pen horizontal and then his table would form etc. I managed my time so poorly though. That’s on me.
I can relate to the flat colours to rendering stage. Once I've done flats I do struggle to know where to go and it's a struggle. Watching Dave do it makes it seem easy and then it's our go....
Love your pen and feathers - the designs are great :)
Here is my final take on Entity character. I was inspired by couple thumbnails so I tried to design two versions. For me rendeing part still feels the hardest. Would be greatful to have any feedback:)
These are very cool! I think I prefer the second one but I like the pop of blue in your first one
Here is my take on Maren Asando. I tend to over rely on lines for my rendering so any tips on rendering form would be nice :)
It's a very different style, but I like it! It looks like a character from a book. Cool Maren!
Hi! Here is my take at Inkpot Sam. I ended up doing both options: the one Dave selected in his feedback video (the bot), and the one I had already selected before his feedback (the owl).
It’s been very fun working on them! It helped me a lot to keep it loose and fluid watching Dave’s process and listening on how he tackle’s the piece, focusing more on the design idea and not so much on cleaning every little piece of it.
You've done such a great job rendering the robot!! Wow, looks insane, well done. I like your owl too and the chunkiness of those books looks so good.
My take on Inkpot Sam! I changed direction about a hundred times, and found that I have a lot to learn about material/texture rendering and choosing colors.
I thought of Sam as a stern, wise, no-nonsense character that happens to be oblivious to how unorganized he is. I really like characters that have opposing traits, so I wanted him to seem strict yet charming!
This class has shown me that it's okay to take time to think about the character, and that it's okay to change things in the late stages of the piece if something doesn't feel right (even if it might be a little extra work!). All in all, this was a ton of fun and a valuable experience!
Well done! Love your page with all the versions. It's so cool to see the changes and the process
