Creating Characters That Come Alive

This course is for artists who already have a solid foundation and want to take their concept work to a more professional, production-ready level. I’ll walk you through my process for turning a written character brief into a fully realized design that’s clear, functional, and ready to hand off to a modeling team. It’s not just about making something that looks good, it’s about solving problems and communicating ideas in a way that works within a game studio pipeline.

We’ll start with the fundamentals of character design and the role of a concept artist in a studio environment, then move into thumbnailing, silhouette exploration, and character iteration. I’ll show you how I refine ideas, apply feedback, and push designs toward a final render that’s both creative and usable. You’ll also learn how to break out complex objects for modelers, present your work clearly, and avoid the most common portfolio mistakes I’ve seen over the years.

Each section includes demos, assignments, and critiques, along with a set of original character briefs created specifically for this course. I’m also including a custom brush set I use in my own work, which you can use for your assignments or your personal projects.

If you’re looking to push your designs further and get a better understanding of what concept art for games really involves, you've found the course to teach you exactly that.

Who Am I

Hi, I’m Dave Greco and I'm a Senior Character Concept Artist at Blizzard Entertainment. Over my professional career, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to contribute across games big and small. Since joining Blizzard, I’ve worked on projects that mean a lot to me like World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, and even Magic: the Gathering!

Now, I’m excited to step into the role of instructor and share the tricks, techniques, and mindset I’ve collected along the way. I hope you learn a lot and have fun through this awesome process!
