Heya, here's my thumbnails for The Entity. I focused more on the unshackled version of this creature, trying to make a blend between armor, abomination flesh. and shadow. I dig the versions where one shoulder has been sort of mutated, but I also quite like the hooded versions. I'd like to hear your opinions as well. Thank you <3

ASSIGNMENTS

Now it's your turn to practice the thumbnailing process. This assignment will help you generate multiple ideas quickly and effectively.

Your Task

Choose one of the 4 character descriptions provided below and follow these steps.

  1. Create 7 to 10 thumbnails for the description you selected.
  2. Focus on creating a variety of ideas. Each thumbnail should feel like a brand new concept.
  3. Pay close attention to the silhouette. Make sure the changes from one thumbnail to the next are significant enough to create a unique and readable shape.

Character descriptions

Maren Asando - For this quest we need a character that the player meets and is trained by before heading into a dungeon. She's an archeologist that specializes in finding, exploring and excavating ancient magical ruins. She is a natural linguist that can learn any language in just a few days, and can decode writing and hieroglyphics that have been lost for thousands of years. She has a small otter (or whatever, a small cute animal) companion named Glub that she uses to scout out dangerous ruins and her linguistic skills are strong enough that it seems like she can talk directly to it in a combination of squeaks, whistles and simple english. She has a deep distrust and suspicion of the academic elite and hates having to prove her work to them. She is fastidious, meticulous and can come off as aloof - but that's to mask a deep passion she has for her work; she doesn't want to get hurt again by people she trusts. She's the one who teaches the player to decode the puzzle runes that are scattered throughout the dungeon, and then accompanies them through, providing tips and pointing out secrets.  Eventually the player can recruit her as a companion.

The Entity - The final boss in the Prison of the Broken Sword, The Entity was imprisoned by a dynasty of warrior-kings who have since fallen from grace and nearly passed into memory. The Entity is chained to a wall in a full body restraint system that was repurposed from a suit of armor. The Entity's eyes and mouth are visible through the mask but nothing else is. No one ever sees it moving (but it definitely moves) and only occasionally do you hear it breathing, and patches of moss cover its armor. Every so often a curious visitor will receive a fragment of information, delivered in a low raspy tone that is somewhere between garbled prophecy and insane wisdom. It only seems to eat rodents as evidenced by the piles of bones around it and offerings of food and drink rotting in piles. The player can only defeat The Entity when they reassemble the Broken Sword and use it to open the locks that bind it. During the boss fight, The Entity uses the huge brass locks fastened to it's chains in wide swinging attacks that the player can get inside of and stab at weak points in the prison armor.

Mikkles - This is a type of creature we're adding to the upcoming DLC (downloadable content/expansion pack). Since the theme of the DLC is around material transmutation (but we can only afford one new enemy type), we want them to be usable in a variety of situations but also be able to provide a bunch of different material drops when the player defeats them. The idea is they are sort of furry goblins that come in all shapes and sizes. Kind of like angry raccoons?  We want them to have a manic energy and are sort of unpredictable, and they can use the new traversal system we are adding - so we see them climbing up walls and dropping down on the player, or maybe rolling into balls or something. Scrambling up ledges, climbing vines - you've seen the demo so you know that this is a pretty versatile system and we want to get an idea of what's possible, so some action shots and behavior sketches would be great just to get the designers and animators thinking outside of the box. This DLC is a little more zany than we're used to doing so we're ok with a more slapstick approach. Consider a bunch of different silhouettes so we can make different character classes so it's easy for the player to make them out at a distance and decide how they want to deal with each group.

Inkpot Sam - We need a character to introduce the player to our Book Making system - the general idea is that he's wiry and tall, but sort of got a bent over look from hunching over a writing desk, copying scrolls and various tomes. That's a kind of classic nerd/crafter look, but we could also go for a brusque craftsman look but he has to be appealing so that players want to listen to him and take his advice, like he has a natural warmth and seems wise. We also wanted to capture some ideas for the Book Crafting Workbench, it should look like a cluttered desk with pots of glue, inkpots of various shapes and colors, partially bound books and different embossing tools, brushes and pens, something that gives it life and sense of character that would be appealing to support players that also like crafting.

I had a lot of fun drawing all these thumbnails. I don't have any ideas about Entity yet, but the idea of a mysterious merchant really caught my attention.
Liam O'Connor
Thumbnails I did for The Entity. I feel like I led too much into the details, but I did try giving more variety and uniqueness to the designs while still staying true to the prompt. I'll try to keep any designs I make a lot simpler going forward.

Okay i finally finished my submission for Maren Asando. It’s not my best work but I defiantly tried to really push past my usual designs. Ive never been very good at designing new characters so this is definitely not my strong suit.
@flavio_illus

Just found this course and thought i'd still share along the way. Inkpot Sam - I was drawn to this character the most, initially starting quite bland I found more interest as I pushed on, Thinking he could be more magical or more burly helped explore more silhouettes. I'm enjoying number 6 so far, thinking he could be both wise and sharp but still have the magical flare with a giant quill enchanting the pages as he goes.
Sean Ramsey
Nice! Yeah I agree with the others that 6, 3, and 7 are my favorites in that order. They each have a distinct thing about them that makes them stand out and memorable, like the giant feather in 6 and the cards for 3 and being... really short for 7 haha

These are cool! six and seven are really strong!

i like 6 and 3

My second attempt at the Mikkels. Much much happier with this one and definitely felt the phenomenon that the later designs are the better ones. 5 and 7 are my favourites

Lots of variations with these! I also like 7 :)

My thumbnailing for the concept of mikkles. I wan't entirely sure if I wanted to go more of an animalistic route or more of a goblin/humanoid route so I did a bit of both. Whilst I think I came up with some fun ideas (I think 2 and 7 are my favourites) I didn't manage to execute them quite in the way I had them in my head. Just not the best day for drawing, but drawing something is all that matters. i will probably go for a second attempt tomorrow

You have great silhouettes here! The variety is great :)

I chose the Entity. Was hard to find ways to create something restraining instead of chains fixed to armour, so all of these tend to work around that idea. Tried to keep the silhouette idea on my mind at all times. Awesome to see how other people tackled this!
Emma Jimenez
i really like F
@portnumb92
I chose the Mikkles creature and focused mainly on exploring varied silhouettes. I experimented with different sizes and proportions to make each variant clearly readable at a glance.

Here are my thumbnails for the Mikkles.

Here's my "The Entity" thumbnails.

I chose the Entity for my assignment. It was fascinating to see how the brain just keeps coming up with other ideas once you give it some space! I devently see room for improvement in my shape language and story telling but dont want to stick around one assignment for too long. Id rather come back in a few Weeks and try this again to track my progress.
Sean Ramsey
Nice, these are awesome! I love he two value system you're using as well. There are so many good choices but I think my favorites are G, H and C. They all have really nice shape/silhouette and feel really engaging to look at. Wouldn't want to meet these folks in a dungeon, even if they're chained up haha
Rebekah Hollins
This is so epic, I love them!

So thumbnailing has always been very difficult for me. Clearly I get really caught up in the details haha. I tried reeeeally hard to consciously remind myself about key elements of the character (Maren Asando) mainly her being an archeologist and that she's an expert in her field. Then a more subtle thing I kept in mind is she lives a very physical and active life, so I wanted her build to speak to the fact she does lots of hiking, trekking and carrying, meaning she's likely very strong and eats quite a bit. Took me a couple designs to figure that out though lol I like the idea that her tools/weapons were ancient or lost artifacts she unearthed giving her an edge in the field that others within her profession don't have making her all the more exemplary and renowned. 'A' and 'B' are Rouge/Elf and Mildly arrogant rude Scholar inspired. 'C' and 'D' are Half giant/Tank and Bookish scholar inspired. Then 'E', 'F', 'G' are Blacksmith, Mage and Assassin inspired. I need to learn to work with a thicker brush, values and at a much, much faster pace is what I'm taking from this. The pencil work took forever. The shapes could be better overall, but honestly I'm pretty happy with them all.

Heyyo! Here's my thumbnails for this assignment, im not super happy with the shape variety. I would have liked more different kind of shapes and ideas. I also feel they ended up with a bit of a different style, some felt too sketchy and some too detailed...

I also didnt realize we were to pick from the list! (This is my first proko course I've missed there's this text part with the videos) so I just kinda winged it from a fantasy theme I guess ^-^

Hello everyone! Unfortunately, I learned about this wonderful course quite late, but I decided to take the opportunity to create my own character. This character originated from a technical assignment I received at work. The task was not included in the final project, and I was granted permission to use it independently for my personal portfolio. About the character: This is Haa’Ss’Naa’Ket, a race of ancient druids. They are not particularly friendly and possess the gift of longevity. Their magic is deeply rooted in nature itself—tree roots, plants, branches, and other natural elements.
