out of curiosity how do you invent a character for say a comic or video game?
LESSON NOTES

What's in Premium?

In this full lesson, I walk you through the rendering phase where the character really starts to come alive. I’ll show you how to evaluate spatial balance and refine shapes, specifically looking at how hair strands interact with the face. You’ll learn my process for testing new design elements—like jewelry and armor—on separate layers so you can explore ideas without ruining your base.

We’ll also cover how to add storytelling details to your design. I demonstrate how to add a "lived-in" look with nicks, dings, and specific textures to metals and cloth. Plus, I explain the importance of repeating design motifs to create a cohesive culture kit for your character. It’s all about making the right decisions to turn a sketch into a professional concept.

You don't need to have every detail figured out before you start painting. It is often more effective to discover the character as you work by testing accessories on separate layers and repeating specific shapes to ensure the final design feels balanced and grounded.

I think it comes down to story/script. What does it need? What does the main character need to do?
