Hierarchy of importance. Any critique welcome
LESSON NOTES

In this demo, I'll explore line weight organization using the hierarchy of importance method. This method involves emphasizing important elements of a drawing using thicker and darker lines, while less important elements have thinner and lighter lines. In this demo, I show the "hierarchy of importance" method for organizing line weight. Check back next week for my demos on the “shadow and light direction” method and the level 2 project!

Hi everyone :) Here is my drawing. I will redo it after because I think it can be better. Feedback appreciated 🙌

Made in Clip studio paint before the demo .

I ve tried to re do the exercice, i like the drawing but i could ve push more certain lines and certainly put more light lines too so it make it look more contrasted wich is what is supposed to happen, i believe (it shows soft, too uniform). I think that at some point I lost sight of the purpose of the exercise.

Level1: This was my first time tracking like ever. I did notice missed some spots I noticed later and I'm still not at the level where I can control my pencil pressure that well. But it certainly it was a nice drawing exercise for line weight.

Post-demo. This time I tried to make the lines bolder like in the demo.

Done after the demo, was lost in the beginning thinking of the importance of the assignment rather than the lines. With the core concept grasped there's more room for improvement now :D

Iv got big brake, but im back !

That’s my result, but I tried to draw it from reference, not just to line the original drawing

Here's another attempt at the level one line weight exercise. I definitely feel like I had better control of my line work this time compared to my first pass. This has been a fun exercise!

Played around with a couple different methods. Was fun!

Before and after demo. I updated my lines to emphasize the outline, the horns, and the eyes a bit more, since they are indeed more important.

This was an interesting one for me! I still struggle a bit with figuring out where the hierarchy (and the light/shadow) goes. But I am starting to understand. I might have to retry this again and see if I can improve it! Happy to hear critiques on how I could've done this better. Thank you!

What kind of pencil was Stan using for this demo?
Stephen Clark
Yeah! That's a a standard Blackwing 602 pencil. Unlike other types of nicer pencils, Blackwing has their own scale that's not a clean 1:1 comparison with standard pencils. This is their middle of the road hardness kind of equivalent. Solid pencil that people love for a reason.

Nice work!

Enjoyed doing these. Was able to apply the things I learnt from the sketching assignments to these. I don’t have a printer so ended up creating my own rhino from observation of the photo. with the bird in pink was just doing the areas of importance felt I got more and more intentional about my lines by the third picture this one with more focus on light
Chuck Ludwig Reina
Great job recreating the rhino. I love that you didn't let not having a printer slow you down. The drawings look terrific. Keep up the good work.

My attempt. Totally open for comments. Thank you.
Chuck Ludwig Reina
Nice work. I think you did a great job of making the drawing pop off the page,. Only small not I would have is perhaps to vary the weight a little around where the two horns meet so it is clear that the larger horn is in front of the smaller one. Well done!

Light weight: 1) hierarchy of importance method, 2) Shadow & Light method, 3) My drawing of rhino from picture.
Chuck Ludwig Reina
Nice work. I like your choices on what to overlap in the hierarchy one.
Shohei Yoshida
I made the outline thicker and the inner lines thinner. I wanted to emphasize the face, horns, and front legs.
