Mannequinization – Structure of the Human Body

When you’re doing these mannequin sketches, always start by establishing the gesture. Find the flow, major angles, and check your proportions with measurements. Then as a second layer, start adding the 3d forms of the mannequin.

These photos are in order of practice, so the better ones are at the end of the end. figuring out what shapes to use for secondary forms, and getting proportions/foreshortening right were the hardest parts of it for me.
Castil Clark
My attempts at construction, in no particular order. Generally top line is older, bottom line is more recent.

It's hard to know exactly if your primary forms are good enough until you start to add secondary forms on top. I feel like I'm still missing gestures to connect my poses, but at least I can see how, once I get the shapes down, lighting will be much easier.
@updatednomad
So if I got it right, the basic processes of figure drawing is: gesture, skeletal landmarks, mannequinization, and anatomy?
Rachel Dawn Owens
Gesture, structure, gesture, structure, ect…. Is another process. It’s what I use. As long as you’re following some sort of thoughtful process, you will get better. You will eventually develop a process which works best for you. The one you laid out here sounds like a fine way to go about it. Give it a shot and see how it goes!

Here it is. On the figure f, the leg seems too short compared to the torso...

Here's my assignment for mannequinization. I have no idea if I did these right.
Melanie Scearce
These look good! You’re effectively simplifying the complex structures to simple shapes - cylinders and boxes. Some of these figures are missing the boxes for the kneecaps and elbows, but that’s a minor point. Is there anything you struggled with while working on this project?
Michael Longhurst
Here are my mannequin drawings. Some were following along with the demo and others were with references on my own. I felt like I struggled to get a good balance between anatomy and staying true to the simplification of the mannequin. I’d love some feedback.

I'm happy that I'm getting more comfortable with figure drawing. This course is helping me a lot.
Tommy Pinedo
Been waiting for this assignment for months! I spent two weeks studying the videos for this chapter. Here are my attempts. Feedback is always welcome! 😬
Tommy Pinedo
also was excited to do this because I want to create an original character so here is some sketches I did of her while doing this assignment. Her name is Eva a celestial being.. Her design is still in the works.

My first mannequin please critique it

Would love to see this finished one day. Giving me Teenage mutant ninja turtle vibes! :D

I was looking at Bridgman while working on this assignment and was thinking about alternating patterns of square and round shapes, and also how the shapes insert.
Alex McCaleb
Bridgman? VERY resourceful

Nice job capturing gesture and proportions while working on form.

This was really hard, I felt like I put too much detail sometimes and guessed the anatomy a lot because I'm not familiar with it. Feel liked I learned a lot through this assignment though.
Melanie Scearce
Wow, incredible! Even though you had to guess at the specific anatomy, you definitely have a solid understanding of how to group the forms. Nice work 👍
@dropfeeling
Some initial tries at mannequinization. Will need to get better at defining the shapes.
Martha Muniz
Great start! Love seeing all the breakdowns of the shapes with cross contours indicating the perspective. For the feet, a shape I like to think about is a wedge, like a triangular piece of cheese. Having a solid flat base for the sole of the feet, but still having that slope at the top, really helps me picture the perspective needed to ground the shape properly. Give it a try! :)

Definitely need to work on my twists and clean up my lines. Need to do like a thousand more of these. Great exercise though. I couldn’t have drawn this a couple weeks ago beyond copying the contours of the photo.
Rachel Dawn Owens
Nice work!

I've no idea how you figured out the scapula positions on the twisting pose, but it's very helpful to see. Thanks for posting.
Rachel Dawn Owens
I like this assignment. I tried to come up with my own mannequins using what I have learned from Proko. Thanks for the great lessons!

my mannequinization practice drawings :) I find it difficult to properly construct a pose, especially the arms and legs atm. any critique is appreciated
Melanie Scearce
I think these are looking great. Mannequinization is meant to be a tool for you as an artist to use in a way that suits your needs, so make it work for you. Your lines could be cleaned up a bit, which makes me think you may be moving too fast through the exercises so maybe try slowing down, taking your time and thinking about each form carefully before placing a simplified shape. Overall I think you have the right idea!

More mannequin practice! My gestures look very stiff but keep working at it with gesture drawings. Aside from that which of my practice help to become better with gesture and perspective more efficiently? the first four or the last four. Any critiques or feedbacks are also welcome!

I think you're doing pretty good! Especially on those last 4, the gesture and the constructions is looking pretty great, and your lines are pretty clean! Cross contour lines properly indicating direction, and the pieces all seem to connect well! I'm no expert but if I had any advice to give is to doing more!
