You'll be using the Zolly App which you can download for free on PC, Android, or any iOS device. Choose a model within the app (or one of free images we've provided in downloads), pick an angle, and do the “Ivan Brunetti” challenge from his book Cartooning: Philosophy and Practice. It’s like this:
Draw your model for 4 minutes, then 2 minutes, 1 minute, 30 seconds, 15 seconds, and 5 seconds.
Those last two get intense!
Medium: Any 2D medium, traditional or digital is allowed. Draw any way you like: with shapes, forms, copying, outlining…The challenge is open to all participants 13 and older.
Deadline
Submit a page of your drawings labeled with the time for each one in the comments below by July 6th in order to be considered for the prize. Marshall will select three entries for a prize.
Join us for our Livestream on July 2 for more information.
Winning criteria will be based on doing the entire exercise within the time allotted for each drawing. Simplicity, clarity, and recognizability are all factors, but if your originality prevails, that counts!
Winners will be announced on July 10th on this page.
Prizes
Each winner will gain access to all premium model packs within the app.
This was a really fun challenge! I might use it as a daily warm up exercise. I found the 4 minute drawings weren't my best which was eye opening for staying lose and fast
There is a "ghost" of a warmup I did on the jeep. I thought I'd try with something more interesting than pencil. I used A Sakura Koi brush pen (Sap Green). This was going to be another warmup but I kind of liked how they came out. Great exercise and fun!!
Coincidentally I've been working through Lynda Barry's making comics book where we do a lot of challenges based on Ivan Brunetti! This was super fun! Also I'm posting a video to my Instagram of my process!
This doesn’t look nice as it’s my first attempt at this kind of object, but I learned so much. By 1 minute I could visualize the attachment points at the bottom moving in a circle and how the front are facing us but the back ones are turned away. I wish the output looked a little nicer but I’m still glad I chose the chandelier because it did something weird to my brain XD
Felt like an exam to see if I belong in art school, and I'm a 5-year-old , trying to piece something together under the stern gaze of an old art teacher, haha :)
Great challenge! definitely found it difficult -> the time really flies :).
Funnily enough I found the 4 minute one uncomfortable because I was a bit too tentative with the pen, and then found that I had hardly any time left haha.
This was hard hahaha but actually so fun and very useful for me as an exercise because I am blessed with children and therefore 4 mins is usually all I get before someone wakes up!
I actually was listening to the draftsman episode on cartooning again the other day and you mentioned that book in there Marshall. Not going to lie, I do hope that one day maybe you'll do a proko course on cartooning?? I would love that.
Anyway here are my attempts...
Brutal challenge!
I feel I should have been able to do a better job with the 4min sketches but since I knew I was 'working against the clock' I started rushing unnecessarily. Later on the rushing was quite necessary ;D
The first one (that machinery that I don't know the name of, I don't even know if it actually exists) is my application to the challenge, the other ones are just for fun. I suggest you people to look at the ref picture just for the 4 min drawing and then keep going only using your imagination (or even do 4 min drawing without ref), it was so much more challenging and fun this way
the last 3 attempts are the perfect representation of an office worker slow descend to madness under the beautiful mercy of a cosmic being called "deadline" =)
Thank you for the fun challenge! Quick measuring of proportions and angles are a skill I need to develop and this is an exercise to address just that! Many thanks for showing off this exercise and organising the event.
This was a crazy amount of fun! Towards the end, the time was so short I could barely glance at the reference at all and I started thinking instead about what the simplest possible way was to get the idea across in the time I had.
I accidentally forgot the cord in the first attempt but worked hard to get it in the rest. I'm in the perspective part of the drawing basics course right now so I was overly focused on the boxes early on lol. What a great exercise!
This is an exercise i'll do more often, i found it very fun.
I've been out of the loop for a couple of months, doing quick gesture drawings almost exclusively, as a result my linework is poor and it built an impatience in me, as if the blank page was insulting in a way 😅
I hope the image is of a good enough quality
Thank you for the opportunity and for everyone at proko giving their best, you guys rock!
