Hi everyone! I chose Enemy 2, as you can see from the sketches i was really uncertain whether to go full "elemental/infernal beast" or towards a less magical creature The idea was to create a creature capable of surviving very high temperatures, with an heavy rock-like shell. Then I hypothesized the existence of very small insects that feeds on the creature shell, releasing substances that react with heat and crystalize on the creature's shell, creating sharp crystals used as weapons Hope you like it! (Yes I'm a huge Monster Hunter fan so i probably ended up putting a lot of its design influence into the final design)

Enemy Descriptions

Enemy 1

"We have a brand new raid coming out and we need a good entry level / first boss. The basis of the raid is an ancient wizard tower starting from the ground floor. As we ascend floors upward, we will discover and run into more allies and creations of this mysterious wizard. The first boss should look formidable but nothing over the top. This could be a creature, an apprentice, or something of the arcane. The encounter team is super open to what the concept team can come up with on this one. Think dark, ancient magic. The idea is this wizard turned his back on his school and allies centuries ago and has been dabbling with forbidden magic for a long time in secret. Standard magic law has been broken and there's no telling what he's been up to in his massive tower. (The tower seems to be growing the more powerful he gets). This one is pretty wide open, but should leave everyone with a direction to at least shoot for.”

Enemy 2

"This task calls for a brand new mob that's going to exist in our plane of fire zone we have coming out. We have a few rigs we could use, but don't worry about that for thinking of this design. We want something that walks on all fours for this creature. Could be cat like, mammoth, rhino, or anything! Get creative as you can with this one! It should look fierce and ready to attack anything that comes within its territory. Think of ways how a creature like this might look, to have to survive on a scorched plane of existence. How it eats, how it hunts, anything that could help take this design up a step. It's nice to show that this species of creature has lived here for thousands of years and how it developed and hunted over that long period of time

I want you to create your own monster boss character.

Take the lessons you have learned so far and apply that specific vibe and feeling to the base of your creature. Choose one of the two enemy encounter descriptions below and go through the entire process from thumbnails to the detailed thumb of your favorite design, to the finished rendering.

These enemy descriptions mirror an experience when you have a designer or director who is looking for more creative input from the concept team. Show us all your steps but also feel free to show your progress in the assignment post if you're not sure what direction to take or are looking for general feedback.

Avoid the "Loose Shape" Trap

It is common to start creating loose, organic shapes that look crazy but do not make actual sense. I fall into this trap myself. You need to slow down and analyze your work. Ask yourself how the anatomy works and why the character looks the way it does.

Define the Character

Your design should reflect the internal logic of the creature. Take time to explain these factors through your visual choices:

  • Powers and Abilities: What can the monster do?
  • Personality: How does the character behave?
  • Setting: Where do they live or come from?

Storytelling Through Details

Backstory adds depth to a design. If your monster wears armor or clothing, determine the source.

  • Are they crafting armor themselves?
  • Is it an inherited suit?
  • Are they wearing scraps?
  • Is it ancient armor they came back from the dead with?

Take a little bit of time to think about these details. Put that backstory into the design to make it believable.

You have until 02/25/26 to submit your art for possible inclusion in the critique video!

Sean Ramsey
Hey all! Just an update that Dave has filmed the critique and we're hoping to finish the edit to go out on Tuesday the 17th! There were so many awesome pieces to go through on this one.
Zoungy Kligge
Hey Sean just FYI there’s a quirky behavior in the comments feature. I saw a notification about your comment here in Character Concept Art, navigated away from Marshall’s Perspective Course to see it, then went back to Marshall. Now sometimes the comments area in Marshall’s course are about perspective, but once in a while it slips back into comments about character concept art.
Hans de Winter
Thanks for spending the time on this! Good luck editing it all Sean! :)

Nice work, Ru!

Hi everyone. this is my go at Enemy 1. I've also included my previous Maren work as I was late on that last time. Not necessarily for feedback (although great if there is time), but just so Dave can have a peak at it. After all he was a big drive in getting this done. Loved the course! Thanks Dave!
Sean Ramsey
Great! Dave's recording this weekend so I'm glad you got your piece in on time!

Hello everyone!! I managed to finish my idea on time, though I admit that I life caught up to me so I couldn't refine the render enough, but its still good enough for a concept XD.
@marcosolivera
Hey guys! I'm sharing my rough sketch. Unfortunately, I haven't had time lately to polish it, but I hope to finish it in the next few days and hopefully get some feedback so I can use it. Have a great day!

My boss design, though it is still very rough :D

I love it :D The blueish tinted armor and the glowing energy inside looks real nice. I would actually love to paint him or his buddy myself. Super inspiring!

Here is my enemy 2, I hope you like it! This was a real challenge for me. Form is not my strong point so that is what I was trying to work on most. I was just kind of getting into the rendering but the deadline crept up on me a bit. I put him on a light background in the end because I figured he was a blend in and wait kind of guy, so I showed him in rest mode (pretend rock) and fight mode. Thanks so much Dave for all the videos and critiques. It’s so helpful to have you look over our work and give advice. I will be watching your demos over and over, they’re great.
Sean Ramsey
Haha yessss! So glad to see this one finished. You really nailed the "character" in this character design. It just oozes personality :D

I love it! It's awesome to see your work evolve here. 3 spiky tongues is hilarious.

hello everyone. Picked the 1st brief for this assignment. Thought it would be neat to mash two types of forbidden magic together. As in the 1st floor sets you up thinking its just necromancy until you reach the boss who's showing the early signs of some kind of eldritch experiment. (and yes the left arm is intended to have weird length/proportion)

Here is my submission. I decided to do enemy no 1 this time as I also wanted to do a charcter who is mor human-like. When she was young, this elf was one of the most talented magic students. She was extremely ambitious but also just as impatient, and very quick-tempered. For her final exam, her teacher sent her to a high mountain in a dark swamp, with the sole task of waiting there without using magic. This was supposed to teach her balance and calmness. She understood this, but did not see why she should change anything about her own personality, which had helped her achieve such rapid success. So instead of her composure growing, only her anger grew. When her teacher still had not appeared after 20 days, she climbed down the mountain and in the swamp she turned to a darker magic. Blood magic. Needless to say, she was then cast out by the wizards' guild for this and all future lives (should her soul ever be reborn), and despised and hated by every good wizard for all time. For her protection, she sought refuge in the dark tower, where she has since lived and guarded the ground floor. Thank you so much for the course, Dave! I have really learned alot. The drawings/paintings I did turned out way better than I ever exptected when I started the course. Is there any chance you will be doing some more courses in the future? I would definitely be interessted.
Derek Mündlein
Hey all :) For my enemy1 submission I Decided on a big grumpy Oger like entity that was altered by magic and now is convinced he is a great wizard. As a boss he would be a tanky slow moving opponent that dashed out heavy hits and unstable magic. Under the large book that he uses as a shoulder pad is a weak point which calls for some nice unique mechanics. Shoot the book down – get a couple hits in – he recovers his book. And so forth. I still struggle with fabric.. so i would love some tips on that. Thanks again to Dave for this amazing course. I have made insane progress in the past weeks. Amazing
Sean Ramsey
What a cool concept! You don't get to see Ogres in magic roles very often and this is a great take on a fresh concept. I wish we had a Proko game studio so we could stick all these awesome character designs into a game. And on the fabric side of things, we filmed a drapery course with Michael Hampton recently that we're working on and he was big on simplifying fabric into gestural shapes based on what type of fold is happening in the fabric. He would also draw the character's body first and then draw the fabric over the body, even when the character was covered in fabric. Not sure if that's what you did here but if you didn't it might be useful to do that.

hey all! attached is my submission for enemy 2, alongside concepts for enemy 1; time was an issue here, but im still happy with how things turned out i got some joy out of the gag that the first boss of this intricate wizard tower would be an aggressive version of the boxes you've been using to solve puzzles, introduced through some kind of bait and switch. there would be five faces, each with their own way of damaging the player. id imagine there'd be some kind of slam attack and ramming attack too since this is a lower level, i thought it appropriate to make the boss appear a lot more unkempt and visceral in nature; maybe it's a corrupted experiment from when the wizard first attempted the arcane arts, left to wallow in the tower's basement not too sure about the specifics, but i had a lot of fun here. its been a joy seeing what other people have come up with for the same prompts as for the critique (which i hope ive made it in time for), are my designs too simple? how can i add intrigue without overcomplicating things? thanks!

Enemy 3 (My OC) Bone Golem A vicious undead abominable amalgamation of various skeletal remains of humans, monsters and other beings. Conjured from the dark magic of the mad dark wizard and bound together by a hatred and malice for all living things. All adventurers beware the Bone Golem!

Nice! 5 heads! I wonder what voices and personalities they have.

Enemy 2 Ardenti Bestia (Fiery Beast) An ancient colossal 'fiery beast' that terraforms its environment into lakes of boiling lava for protection and hunting. Now under the control of the mad dark wizard this embittered flame kaiju scorches everything and everyone indiscriminately.

Enemy 1 (Apprentice) Arcane Bubble Mage What should have been an art form for fun and merry making; this apprentice mage has now unlocked the complete deadly arcane spells of bubble magic. Her master certainly chose right to make her his apprentice...after she executed her fellow students at his command.

Hey all! This is my submission for Enemy 2- the Apothecary! This is by far in a way the most difficult thing I have ever drawn, but I’m pretty happy with how it came out! I’ve loved seeing everyone’s work throughout this class, I’m gonna miss it! Story: The Apothecary. Once a knight captain of the kingdom, she found herself brutally maimed in another one of the kingdom’s pointless wars. Her injuries left her shunned by the people she swore to defend. That said, one Archmage took pity on her and began his work to repair her injuries. Years later, having now replaced her legs and arm with magical prosthetics, the Archmage who she has now swore her life to defend turned on the kingdom and retreated to the Dark Tower, and so she followed. Having studied under the now-necromancer, the Apothecary finds herself gifted in necromantic science, and uses the souls of local villagers to create a stitchflesh army for her master. In order to reach her, players must stow away among the deceased bodies of the nearby villages to be wheeled into the laboratory of the Dark Tower to catch her by surprise... unless they want to deal with the undead army which guards the entrance. Boss Phases/Mechanics: > The Apothecary’s fight revolves around 4 large vats, all different colors. The Apothecary will anchor her syringe railgun to each vat and infuse herself with its power, granting different buffs and debuffs, allowing for players to choose their own strategy. > At certain health thresholds, The Apothecary will break a given vat and flood the room with liquid - standing in any of this liquid for extended periods will result in a player’s death. The Apothecary will then also use her robotic limbs to clamp to the walls of the laboratory and mark specific players for an onslaught of magical attacks. To survive, players must retreat to the operating table in the center of the room to dodge the liquid, and communicate with marked players to stand away from the rest of the raid. > At the final vat, the Apothecary will go berserk. She injects herself with her own syringe, restoring her health and completing the transformation she had begun on her left arm, and transforming herself into a full-fledged monster. In this final phase players will need to take extreme caution in dodging her attacks, as their attacks are now obsolete. The only way to beat the Apothecary now is to run, hide, or out-heal her attacks until she succumbs to the side effects of her transformation. I've also attached a rough sketch of the vat and one of the monsters she made- but I never finished them in time :P

Hey all! I was looking more at my submission and some small details were really bothering me. I went ahead and tweaked it, here’s my (re)submission!
Drin Mehmeti
Looks super cool! I love how all of her body parts are super polished and your rendering of metal is godlike! Can’t wait to see more of your work.
Kyle Hernandez
Looks awesome! The story is super cool and fun. Would love to see how she would fight in both forms.
Jason Wiedmaier
Here are my submissions. I chose enemy 1. I took the thumbnail original that’s mostly blue and really tried to push variations. I think they’re all still WIP, but I’d love feedback on which would be the best to take further. Thanks

Hey y'all, everybody's work looks amazing and I've loved seeing everyone's characters and design work! I haven't been able to find the time to render this fully yet, but I want to show what I've got so far to see what everyone thinks. Her vibe is that she is a human cremation service for the BBEG, who after being a failed experiment has been tossed to the bottom of the tower. I will be rendering this fully when I have the time and doing some breakouts and the like, so I'll show that later!

This is so sick. I especially love the runes on the shoulder and the little story you have with it dragging its back legs behind it. Such a cool design also the finished Maren looks awesome!!

Hello everyone! This is my submission for the "Enemy 1" that I renamed Nicolosa the witch. I tried to be a little more "dark", also is out of my confort zone. My style infact is more cartoonish, and I think we can see that in this darker style too ahah Nicolosa has studied for years to create this alchemical liquid that allows her to transcend from her mortal body to that of an inhuman creature. This metamorphosis allows her to amplify her powers, but fortunately the transformation is not complete. The hero must stop her before it's too late! Hope you like it!
Federico Teodori
I noticed that the upscaling wasn't very good, here the render in a higher quality. Hope Dave sees this :)
