LESSON NOTES

What's in Premium?

I’m taking our rough sketch and diving deeper into the details. In this full lesson, I show you how to use value layers to create a spotlight effect that highlights your focal points. We’ll paint right over the line work to clean up the design while keeping enough of that messy sketch texture to suggest rocky details.

I’ll walk you through my thought process on silhouettes and big shapes to ensure the character reads well from a distance. I also cover how to answer important design questions, like how joints function or where armor connects, so your character feels grounded and valuable to a production team. We’ll get the 3D form solid in black and white so we’re ready for color.

A strong character design needs to work before you ever touch the color wheel. This demo focuses on refining black and white values to establish a clear focal point. It shows how to polish the silhouette while keeping the rough sketch underneath for texture. This approach helps you solve design problems and build solid 3D forms.
