This project has been so much harder for me. My whole life I've only ever seen contour when trying to draw so it's left me unable to invent for my self very effectively. I've been redoing this project everyday since it came out and I finally feel like I'm starting to grasp the concept.

It’s time for another demo! Come check out my process for simplifying animal portraits into basic shapes.
Adrian Damengen
Here are my simple animal portraits and my attempt at drawing the chicken in a matter of different shape styles. I struggled more than I’ve ever had with imagining the animal in another shape, but after looking at the level 2 demo I feel like I understood it more. at least it look like I did with my last 2 chicken attempts. i will draw more animals in more shapes the next days to try and loosen the knots in my mind. i will gladly take any form of critique!
Adrian Damengen
Tried a few giraffes today, still need to try more animals and «see» shapes more. For now I’m moving a bit forward before returning

These look great. One thing I'm noticing, some of your lines feel very loose and flowing, while others feel a bit stiff. I'm not sure if it is because you're gripping your pencil too tight but it is something to be aware of. Your loose lines look great and confident, like you're drawing with your whole arm. Sometimes something as simple as loosening up can really help find those big shapes. Good work!

I haven't watched the critique yet. It's interesting trying to break animals down into basic shapes. I struggled most with the hippo although now he's my favourite.

Getting the concept now but finding it difficult to make the shapes interesting. I guess it comes through studies and practice. Pls feel free to post your critics.

Attempts after watching the demo. This was a interesting assignment, I need to try and draw other animals.

My attempt before the demo (in blue) and after the demo (in red). This was harder than I thought before starting the project. Big improvement on the hippo and the buffalo between attempts, I think. Also did some more animal portraits with references from pexels (third image) before watching the demo.
Chuck Ludwig Reina
Nice! yeah big improvements for sure. Would love to see another go now that you've seen the video of those animals on the third page. Great work!
@starlingwarlock
post demo attempt at the pictures i tried earlier. don't think much changed, very hard to try to think in shapes
Shohei Yoshida
The last tiger image didn’t seem to have enough shapes with just ten, so it ended up becoming thirteen.

For level 2 I designed the chicken to be fiercer the buffalo to be goat like and the hippo surprised

Here are 3 animals I drew - before the demo (right side) and after the demo(left). Stan's demo definitely helped.

I hadn't drawn in a couple of days, so I decided to make a copy of Proko's shapes to get back into the swing of things. Have a good day!

Here is the second half of my simple animal portraits but level 2 this time. Really tried to lean into shape language to make personalities. Struggled a little bit but I feel like I learned a bit. Tried to implement line weight but got tired at the end there. I also exaggerated proportions. Lemme know y’all’s critique or words of encouragement :) it’s encouraged.

I tried to get the shapes into small sketches firstand then do the final drawings. I used markers because I just got them and got excites jeje but I need to learn how to make out the shadows.

These are so cool and interesting. I love how you interpreted this assignment. That first page especially nails it. There’s a very solid sense of shape design. Great stuff!
