Drawing box flaps in perspective often causes distorted shapes. Treat the pivot point as a fulcrum to maintain the exact size of the flap. Projecting a square into an ellipse creates a radius that tracks the flap along the vanishing trace.

Thanks Daniel and Marshall for the tutorial. Here's my attempt at Rolling Box Flaps. I followed along with the video but found it difficult to pin point the ellipses reference points within the the large squares. I picked up some and approximated the others.

Box Flaps drawn along with video. I did them separately as I was trying to work out why I'm not managing to replicate the box dimensions. I suppose you can draw any two point box but I can't seem to copy a box, if I want that is. Anyway rather than not post, here's my second box flaps. I ended up going above the horizon line when creating the large square. I experimented a little but wasn't sure just how far to extend the rectangle to achieve the required square dimension to achieve a successful ellipse. Feedback would be great. Thanks Again,

Ok, good discussions in comments and despite the slight frustration from sub-optimal square and ellipse eyeballing, the technique does work to get ‘good-looking flaps’ ! Did some messy repetitions which helps to understand the gist of what is going on so last image is my eyeballing box flaps in perspective without any construction….not as bad as I thought thought it would be but had to correct the X lines on flaps to all converge to ~same VP, and the closer flaps are probably a bit too long. In general I found that the more cube/square the starting box the better the result which makes sense….the more rectangular the starting point the more chance of proportional errors simply due to the bigger difference in scale between Y and Z/X.

Also gets a bit weird looking if the X edge of a box flap moves past the left VP….haven’t quite got my head around that yet…

To find the square to find the radius - on the video, Daniel just gauges the square based on the rectangle by ‘eyeballing’ on Y axis since that has no diminution. Am i correct here? I’ve watched several times and cannot see any other basis..(?) What is confusing is that he draws in the left edge of the square before projecting any diagonals, which means he eyeballed whilst accounting for diminution on Z….?! What am I missing here?

Looks like he eyeballs it, yeah. Quite accurately at that. Extending the flap shapes perfectly on x and y axis to build a super accurate ellipse guide for an uneven shape like that would've gotten quite confusing just from the sheer amount of additional work required, perfect scaling probably isn't the purpose of this demo.

You have to extend the rectangle to a SQUARE. OMG. I did it wrong for so many years...Everyone casually crossed X in front of rectangles (assuming the square in perspective status, but not saying it clearly), and I had to find out why some boxes had neat circles I could do my flaps, and some others were not....
