ASSIGNMENTS
I designed some small designs on my iPad and large thumbnails in the sketchbook. I used the first silhouette for the sketch, as you can see it changed a lot lol.
I have outlined the full set now and will use one of them for the final assignment next.
These are great! The silhouettes are easy to read and show clear character as well. Great use of negative space. They could be expanded upon easily to become more finished designs. Also, The design and detail you put into the finished drawing is top notch. Well done!
Decided to take another go at some silhouettes :)
These are so enjoyable to do because the gesture really comes naturally when painting big blocky shapes to start with. Using line to define a slight amount of contour here but not too much. Hoping to eventually land somewhere between cartoonish/realism and a sense of believability.
Not sure if this was exactly the idea. I put down marker silhouettes and then tried to design forms over them. Fun assignment.
Well, I can’t say that it took 10 minutes a piece, but with time I will gain speed hopefully!)
I do like a couple of them after all and later want to come back to some of these designs and make a finished artwork!)
[thought I’ve noticed that our definition of a thumbnail varies slightly 😂]
Though that is not a new exercise, it is the first silhouette list in a long time, done fully digitally
Funny enough I was so excited to work in marker and ink when I signed up for the course, but found myself too tired to work traditionally these days, want to just lie down and listen to audiobooks - so decided to use the course to train more in the digital domain while I’m at it!)
cool stuff)
first, i was thinking about some battle droid, than it changed into some kind of utility robot, that walks around a junkyard and "processes" the trash (cuts it into small pieces or something)
Had a blast with this one too! Just as the lesson mentioned, starting with a silhouette frees the design for more gesture and rhythm. It's like the designs appear magically out of thin air. What an awesome method to have in the tool box!
Light copic then going back over to refine with pen and another shade. Pretty fun but you still need to be thinking spatially, I should of drawn more perspective grids for each.
So far, I've been mostly drawing from reference so It kind of liberating that in this course, there isn't really a right or wrong with respect to proportions, anatomy etc. :)
Still, I don't find it super easy to come up with original robot forms so I started with big blocks and tried to apply the carving-in method.
I kinda liked the insect like legs of the second one so I tried an iteration with a different "torso", this time sketching on paper with a fountain pen while the first two were done digitally.
