First time learning how hatching works, really adds a nice feel to the line work. The lighting should be coming in from top right side of the image.

First thought I would place a set light source to do this assignment. I then decided to disregard the light source and just place hatching anywhere I pleased in order to get more milage practice-wise.
Alain Rivest
I redrawn the reference and also did a variation on the reference. Each with a different light source. It would be helpful to have more detailed explanations on the hatching technique. I didn't change the line weight for the hatching. Only for the form itself. And now that I look at the second one, I think the shadows are too flat and uniform.

Hatching with 2 different light sources. I still wonder how to balance indicating light with hatching and coloring, since they do some of the same work - but maybe that’s just something that comes with experience.

By chance I did the same light direction as the previous submission. I chose this angle as I thought it would be easier to read with less shaded areas.

I aimed for light coming from the top left, which seemed like it left a lot in light. Any advice on not losing details to hatching? I felt like I lost the separation of the box thing on the top right and had to darken the line to distinguish it from the hatching. Also I tried to make the connecting plane on the bottom left lighter, but just felt like it came out messy.

Do I like hatching - nope)) Does it have quite an effect anyway? Yep) Also, I kinda feel like I'm making an illustration for an old newspaper - back then when they only had black ink to print and I like when techniques have deep roots in the culture of old and new!) Good day and smiles to those who read this message!)

I usually use cross hatching, this forced me to think about planes. I had to redraw some areas.

To be honest I prefer cell shading and/or halftones, but this was still interesting.
