@Len Nicholas is the pen you're using for the initial underdrawing a ballpoint pen or a gel pen? I tried to use few ballpoint pens I have and copics are dissolving the ink. Gel pens I have hold against the markers well, but I can't make them to draw as lightly as your underdrawing in the demo. Their lines are very similar to the fineliner too and are easy to be confused for the parting and contour lines.
This is my robot before shading! I took the challenge to make it without reference and it was tough... It's crazy how difficult it is to think of surface details without anything to look at.
I need to look at a lot of Doug Chiang ;)
Here's my drawing. First pic is a more detailed sketch of quick sketch / thumbnail I did. Second is a redraw of toned paper with ink. Third one is the same drawing with alcohol markers added.
Here's my first full mecha! He's called curiosity, and he helps songbirds defend against cats. It's all for self defense, I swear. Thanks for inspiring me to draw robots, this has brought a lot of joy to my daily art practice. See you on stream! ~Milerski
I was going kinda nuts with robots last year (these have lore and have been a gateway into worldbuilding for me) just want to share these somewhere, before I start doing the exercises and learn how to design better robots.
I'm more used to drawing organic forms, so some have started out inspired by animals. I'm sure there are a ton of mistakes, that I have hidden well enough with the rendering. Those are "Mechanicelium" robots, invaded by mycelium (because there are actual mycelium computers being developed, how cool is that!)
Super work Pixel. I never knew how much I would want to draw robots until I did Lens class. :) I love your first robot with the huge arm!
Len, I loved your lessons and here is my final assignment. I think he is a an ABBA robot singing “thank you for the robots” or he is in pain lol
Awesome design! He looks cheerful, energetic and ready to get the job done. ;)
I too enjoy designing robots that seem to show some kind of character. Just something about a robotic machine that conveys some sense of emotion.
I really appreciate Len and his no nonsense explanations of his process. Fun course thanks for all the insight/ inspiration!
Tried again for something more technical more line weight practice, my perspective might be slightly off ...so as len puts it im not going to keep sanding a turd lol

That was a lot of fun! Thanks very much for knowledge and the rest is - to practice!)
good day to everyone!)
my first robot design. turned out little minimalistic compared to other's assignment, but i am still happy about it.
i definitely should have drawn it bigger to add more details. and should be braver with shading (to use more darks). i will try on my next robot.
thanks for the course, Len! i learned a lot (not just about robot drawings)
Tried putting together what I learned. Decided to try gouache paint and sepia acrylic ink, wasn’t the best paper for it but still a fun experiment.
So this is my final drawing. I’m happy with the drawing until i add markers, then I think it ruins it a bit. I’m not good enough with em.
Anyway, I tried to give the mecha an appealing silhouette without overcomplicating things. I got inspired by warhammer and random robot mecha. Thank you for the lessons, much more fun drawing mechanichal things than I thought!
I didn't have markers so I scanned it into Procreate and added some color. :)
Really nice way to round out this course. Hoping to continue to practice drawing more mechanical style objects and robots with these techniques! Great course!
