ASSIGNMENTS

You'll be assigned two projects to practice gestural perspective. This first one is a little easier, while the second will be mainly for level two, but I encourage everyone to try both. The main focus is on creativity, iterative improvement, and applying your perspective knowledge intuitively.

Level 1

Warm up with a simple doghouse. Use deformation methods to create an interesting shape. Avoid random deformations; make purposeful changes. If a deformation doesn't look good to you, change it.

Then design a more complex building, such as a house, apartment, motel, cottage, or church. Add multiple parts to the building, like a chimney, room extensions, or separate buildings. Apply the deformation methods to give them personality.

  • Make decisions with a purpose but also have fun and explore.
  • Follow your gut and make changes if something looks wrong.
  • Spend time on the project until you're proud of it.
  • Iterate and improve your design; don't just copy my example.
  • Practice multiple times to make it easier.
  • Focus on adding gesture and personality to your forms, not just accurate perspective.

Level 2

For level two, try designing a tree house. This is trickier due to the interaction between organic and inorganic forms, more complex design problem, and lack of a solid foundation.

Deadline - submit by July 9, 2024 for a chance to be in the critique video!

did another one I'm slightly more happy with. Still going to keep doing these
Rich Acosta
this was a lot of fun, but I think I'm going to probably stick to it for a little while just to get more comfortable with everything. I don't know what I was thinking with the back door thing. It just looks weird. Also I have a hard time with the "Twisting" motion. I have a couple of boxes on the side that I did that look OK, but I can't draw twisting forms with any kind of consistency
Chuck Ludwig Reina
Looks fun! And yes, twisting can be tricky. Don't be afraid to combine ideas. As you learn to do more perspective, mixing the gestural approach with traditional perspective can help figure out some of the twisting and turning issues. Keep up the good work!

Wow, the textures look awesome!

Mostly turned it into a random doodle as I worked, but tried twisting some boxes, adding some cross-contour lines, and playing about with concepts from the chapter. I am quite bad at trees, so tried to draw whatever came into my brain as I played with it.
Travis Rossi
A few attempts and the level one project and a tree house for level 2 that is most likely not osha approved.

My latest submission, in which we learn why I never became an architect. For some reason, I spent most of my time on Kong and the tree, which is a bit of a fail for a gestural perspective box exercise... I tried fine liners for Kong and decided I don't like them. Perhaps I will come back to them down the road after I've learned a lot more about rendering (looking forward to Len Nicholas's Line Weight Course). I haven't decided if the tree man is gigantic and the tree town is for normal sized people, or if the tree is normal and the tree is populated by fairies. Either way works, I suppose. I imagined him rooted in the ground here, but that sometimes he gets up and walks around rather like one of Tolkien's ents, allowing the residents a change of scenery now and then.
Chuck Ludwig Reina
Nice work on these! One thing to really think about when drawing GIANT creatures (even if they only seem giant to the fairies in the tree!) is where the horizon is. I absolutely love your tree dude, but I'm not really sure where the viewer is seeing it from. By playing with the way lines converge, we can mess with how high or low the viewer is. Something to consider when going kiju size! Again, awesome work. These look great.
Tommy Pinedo
Love the creativity! Great job!

These two sketches are awesome! You are saying that you spent more time on the figures than the architecture, therefore missing the point of the lesson. However, from my point of view, the figures visually represent the “why” of the architecture. They visually complete the story of the drawing. If these were drawn from your imagination, that’s even more awesome! Great work! Cheers!

Here it is my tree house. I enjoy much more the final result than the castle. Although that I didnt push too much the gesture and bending of the structures.
João Rudge
Get carry away with this drawing. And in the end I dont know if the result of the assignment was all that great... any feedback is welcome.

So cool!

Really like all of then. The tower and the tree houses specially. Great line work and gesture.

😁🙌This was a solid excersise. ...playing/pushing the dynamics and prespective in subtle to super exaggerated ways to see what works visually/practically.
William Montalvo
This is really good
@notapirate
Gestural Architecture Level 1 and Level 2 ... honestly, I may or may not unlocked a new urge to draw trees ( I definitely did ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

awesome!

Fixated too heavily on perspective and found myself not adding any gesture to my first couple drawings. Last one (1st picture) focused attention on applying some gesture.
Logan Keller
Here is mine. I enjoyed this but wish I had a better idea of how to add textures etc. I know I am messy and am working on it haha idk why but im shaky all the time; even when still.

I made Snow white's cottage. it was really hard to get the details of the windows

Level 2 assignment. I learned 2 things: I have trouble figuring out perspective in trees, and I can’t draw trees.

I think you are too hard on yourself. I really like your trees!
