LESSON NOTES

What's in Premium?

In the full lesson, we explore how to use grids to improve your line directions and proportions. You'll learn how grids guide your lines and help maintain accuracy, and how to avoid common mistakes like reversing grid lines that cause divergence instead of convergence. We discuss the importance of foreshortening and how daring to apply it adds dynamism to your drawings.

You'll gain insights into managing distortion by understanding perspective and adjusting vanishing points. The lesson covers estimating proportions through trial and error, encouraging you to compare your drawings with ortho references. We emphasize the value of drawing through forms and embracing rough sketches to refine your work.

For complex objects, we offer strategies to handle them without getting overwhelmed by grids. You'll learn to focus on essential grid lines and ignore unnecessary ones to keep your drawings clear. Throughout the lesson, we encourage you to embrace the learning process and view mistakes as opportunities to improve your skills.

Let's take a look at your perspective grids, focusing on line direction and proportion. We'll covers common errors like reversed grids and distortion from wide-angle views, while stressing the value of estimating proportions through observation.

@Marshall Vandruff You are a gem. Funny, hella skilled and rocking that Beanie. Thanks for teaching us <3.

But how do we know how to draw the grid?

Hi Mashall, thanks for the feedback. I personally feel the biggest difference in my line quality is not the inks but the first ones were drawn freehand and the latter ones were drawn with a ruler. I guess it's tempting to go in with a pen like all the greats even though I'm still not there yet!

I am wondering if the class is going to cover vanishing traces and implied horizon lines?

Hi Marshall, thank you very much for your critique. Now my new Mantra is "which part is the closest to me... 😉. Thank you, very helpful.

Yes Marshall, thank you so much for all the detailed critiques. We all are happy and eager to learn from you :)
@lieseldraws
Marshall, thank you for the detailed critique! It’s really helpful. Here is another attempt at dramatic foreshortening where both VPs are very close to us but one is closer than the other. The left wing, the more distant one, is noticeably shorter. Hope I got it right this time :)
Marshall Vandruff
Wow! You are one to take a dare and surprise the darers!

Once again, Marshall, I apologize for having the assignment on the Grid, making it hard to read. Also, my brain as I was drawing my object again, completely blanked out on putting the grids out, so I apologize on my behalf. I'll just have to get used to thinking and putting my grids out from now on, though, for sure. Thanks for trying your best, though, on giving me a critique though Anyway, I appreciate it. Also, I'll try and start drawing a little more neatly as well.

Thanks for the critique and lyrical spin on my violin. :3 I’m working on turning torsos now and it’s I think the first time I’m rotating organic complex forms from imagination fluidly. It’s an insane feeling of empowerment. (did I hear tumbling cubes upcoming lesson? That’s a lot of right angles) 😆

Marshall, thanks for the critique. I did print off all 12 box grids and then quickly realised I was in a spiders web of lines, without a clear understanding of the grids and their construction with respect to VP's and Horizon lines. I look forward to the lessons ahead that you mention.

Working on them now so that you will both understand and, like a rock guitarist, choose your distortions.

I strive for the line quality some of you have in your sketches, beautiful stuff as usual, and only marginally intimidating!
