Would love some feed back on these practice assignments. The first snail was all out of proportion so I tried again. Noticed in the reference how they were not only a beautiful example of the CSI line options but there were clear sharp and fuzzy areas. I tried to show that in my drawing but not sure how that translated. Really appreciate the simple break downs you offer. When I would start to panic on the shoelace bit, I would pause and just look for the CSI.

The CSI method forced me to think about where and how I'm placing my lines. I'm really proud of the process, yet the outcome not so much. I felt so much clarity in this method, it was really fun. Even with the CSI method, it feels messy or untamed, it could just be a lack of dexterity/line quality. All critiques welcome. Did 4 thumbnails before this.

I just wanna add to the topic of the emotions of line; back in school (like 10 yrs ago) my art teacher gave us an exercise in meditative drawing to just draw random lines on a page. I noticed that most of my classmates drew fast, long lines that ran halfway across the page, but mine were very slow, short and jagged, with many sharp turns. Looking back, I was struggling a lot with anxiety back then which probably explained my line quality. Even now, I have a tendency to default back to short lines, even though I draw with my arm and am totally capably of making long confident strokes. This is a habit I'm trying to break as I get more confident with drawing, but I do think it's interesting that your emotional state could influence the lines that you tend to make. On a side note, I've been proudly drawing everyday for the past 3 months :D here are some ink sketches I did the other day using a calligraphy pen with an emphasis on line weight. Subjects are a combination of ppl from life and from reference photos.

I’m going to draw skulls so far done 9. Most aren’t accurate but it’s okay. This way I can have some mileage with construction as well as basic foundation to the portraits.

My arm is still sore from drawing mushrooms, but I will draw! I have amassed the mass of useless objects that I call my live reference corner! Now I get to actually use them, yay :)

Feeling more confident about placing darker tones now.

I'm always surprised about how much I can learn in just one video. I haven't been drawing with hard shapes/brushes until a week ago. That clarity is way more rewarding than shading with a air/soft brush. Clarity goes a long way.

This challenge really reminded me how complex pencils are. How much range you can get with proper technique is absurd. I can't wait to learn more!!!

I regret treating my first sketchbook so tenderly. My second one (my current one). Has less "interesting" drawings and messier studies, and I'm only 30 or so pages in, but I love it so much more. It's like an adventure every time I open it up. The last page serves for inspiration for the next.
